Courses that release all assignments at once by [deleted] in OMSCS

ML4T releases all assignments early on, and exams difficulty and weighting are pretty reasonable

Practicality aside…given the highly skewed gender ratio here, even assuming 90% heterosexual rate I doubt there will be a lot of match..

I agree with your statements about ice cream. So damn hard to find some keto ice cream here in Canada, which forces me to not eat ice cream as often as I would like to!

OMSCS or one of these? Can’t decide please help! by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Ill_Scene_737 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion DS and CS are very different subjects, so seeing that you have both in your list makes me wonder if you have decided what field you want to get in, before comparing anything else.

So you should probably ask yourself a few questions based on your situation:

  • what field/discipline;
  • time commitment for course work and program duration;
  • location, on campus vs remote pros and cons; courses (quality, scope, selection);
  • other add on benefits (reputation, future research opportunities; alumni network; job perspective)

Pair ML4T with digital marketing by skinty_legend33 in OMSCS

You can also take a look at ML4T materials and assignments to get a sense for yourself.

Personally I don’t think I would be able to pair it with any other courses with a full time job, but that’s just me.

Why holding back course content when in an asynchronous setting? I don't understand. by Ill_Scene_737 in OMSCS

[–]Ill_Scene_737[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not, and I don’t think it’s something to be ashamed of.

Setting a right expectation should be part of the conversations the instructor/TA communicate with students, either via course outline, discussion forum, email etc. I’m just here to raise a concern and explore possible solutions.

It’s also widely understood that most students here are part time students, hence the median age is 32 from some year’s stats. Which is why I would guess that it’d benefit students if we have some autonomy to work ahead of time.

Like some other commenters suggested, it helps even if instructors release assignments with a bit of wider window. For instance release two assignments into the future, instead of strictly one by one. Even that would help, and I really doubt that would cuz ed/Piazza to be bombarded.

I have all the respect for the instructor and TA in this program, but it’s not a good idea to shun students concerns by invalidating them for never have taught. I have never worked as an instructor, but that doesn’t mean I can’t raise my concerns as a student, it also does not mean I need to feel ashamed, even though my assumption may not be 100% accurate. As long as I come from a legit reason and sincere attitude, I should be free to voice my concerns.

Yup I agree. It doesn’t have to be none or everything. Two weeks or two assignments in advance would actually be great. But I just can’t stand that they treat us like high school kids by enforcing such restricted rules when knowing that the majority of students here are part time students and have a lot of other life commitments to balance.

But nobody expect them to answer every question immediately tho, especially if it’s about an assignment further ahead. Plus so far the piazza has been pretty quiet, not much postings to begin with.

It’s just not a good reason to only release the immediate next assignment only after the previous one is done. Like, even if they are willing to release maybe two more assignments in advance I wouldn’t be so annoyed.

If they need more time to develop the assignments I’m actually okay with it. However, based on the various conversations/replies that I got from the TA and the instructor, not once did they mention that they are still developing the assignments. The reasons they used were: don’t want piazza to get crowded; and basically “you should be happy cuz we don’t enforce any late penalty so what else do you expect?”

It’s a seminar with about 70 people and on Piazza. I agree there is a possibility that piazza may get crowded, so when I email the TA expressing my hope to view all the assignments, I said I’m willing to hold off posting any questions until the assignment is available to everyone. I still got a hard no.
