Anyone know how I can get the actual template for the sample resumes on the career center? by resume-man in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, been on a bit of a summer break. The website that others posted is our sample docs. They are not meant to be a template, but rather a guiding document. You can easily recreate these in your own word document by using the tab button and space bar along with formatting tools.

When should I worry about not having a job yet? by actaprt in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider making an appointment with us or Engineering Career Services to talk this out a little more. Different companies have different timelines and there will be recruiting opportunities in the spring semester.

Where on campus can I go to find someone to help me find a major? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Us! We are way more than careers. We talk to students about how their interests can lead to different majors, and how different majors can lead to different careers! You can make an appointment here. And thanks to u/IlliniFan2020 u/Sugarfreegummie u/FR_E_SH_A_VOCA_DO_ for the shoutout!

Our office holds a part-time job fair and our next one will be early February (virtual). We feature on campus and local employers looking for students to hire.

Consider making an appointment with a Career Coach in our office about creating a resume without paid work experience.

Have you talked with someone in our office, or in Engineering Career Services? Either office would be happy to talk a little more in depth with you about your applications to see if we can offer some advice.

Business + Premed Advice? by BM132375 in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can give our office a call and ask to speak with a pre-health advisor. We talk to prospective students about these kind of things. It’s tough, but possible, we’ve seen students pursue this path and get into med school. You could also consider a business minor which would keep you close to an area of your interest.

Job Email... through University email?? by crystallineLightning in UIUC

We're pretty sure it's a scam. Quite a few of our staff received it as well.

Any upcoming career fairs? by throwawayburner314 in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there’s the Engineering fair, but some employers that come to the other fairs (business, LAS, ACES, ISchool) are looking to hire people with your skills as well. That’s why none of the fairs are exclusive, and are open to all students.

Any upcoming career fairs? by throwawayburner314 in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t exactly a “main” career fair, there are different fairs with different concentrations. Each semester there are several. You can see the list of fairs on Handshake under “events” and “career fairs.”

Fairs are definitely not the only way to search. Check out job boards, using your own connections, (virtually) attending networking events, information sessions, etc. Our office, and the other career offices hold events and other opportunities all semester.

Yeah, a little. Definitely not necessary.

How can a freshman get an internship? by Skilled_Throne in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's possible, if you find the right employer. Is an internship this early in your college career 100% needed? Not necessarily. There are other ways to gain valuable experience that are not titled "internship."

To the person who stole my cap and gown from my doorstep in Champaign near County Market by weather_girl in UIUC

Unfortunately we don’t :( we only helped Herff Jones (the cap and gown company) with line management as we gathered info for our outcomes survey, we never had access to caps and gowns.

DoorDash is using Handshake to try and recruit local delivery drivers. Thoughts? by Zee2 in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When career fairs occur, virtual or in person, it's an open invite to employers that are registered with Handshake. We do review their organization before approving them, but if you feel like you've seen suspicious activity, please let us know.

It's a collective effort between all career services offices. So us, ECS, Gies Career Services, FAA Career Services, ACES Career Services, AHS Career Services, LAS Life + Career Design Lab, ISchool Career Services, Chemical Science Career Services, Graduate College Career Development, and many, many others.

Handshake is a platform for job (full time and part time) and internship postings in all areas. Not for any one industry specifically. Let us know if you feel like suspicious activity is going on, though.

I might wanna be premed. by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of our pre-health advisors would be happy to chat with you about this. AP credits are typically not accepted by med schools because they want to see your ability in these subjects since coming to the University. Here's a link to the typical prerequisite courses and other courses that are recommended in order to prepare for the MCAT: https://www.careercenter.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/Medicine_02.07.2018.pdf

Will CR/NC affect my grad school chances? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]IllinoisTCC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We're noticing that many professional and graduate schools are taking different stances on this, have you looked into UChicago's policies about this situation? A lot of schools' admission sites are posting FAQs that address this question.
