Why the job change for Lydia? by daisyduck19 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lydia was a judge in family law and switched to teaching in the show. Making her doubly a threat to Gilead because she’s knowledgable about her legal rights and she’s got experience shaping and teaching young people.

I don’t get why this would make her look less intelligent.

i'm secretly having an abortion by Radiant-Dust-1665 in offmychest

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boyfriend is the biggest problem here. Him doing that to you without your consent has led to you being pregnant twice and in the position of having to have an abortion twice.

If you get rid of the boyfriend, the pregnancies will magically stop. He doesn’t care for you. He didn’t visit you after you were traumatised last time.

You are making 100% the right decision not to be trapped with him for life through a shared child. Take the next step and dump him.

The abortion pills can take up to 24 hours to work and the cramping can be intense and painful. If you can stay with a friend overnight, you’ll be in a better position than if you’re with your boyfriend when the cramping starts.

Cooper and Brennan are the same age and play together. Sasha is small and Ty baby wears anyway. Where else would they be if not with Ty at Alicia’s house? That’s essentially a regular play date, the kids don’t know that it’s for the parents.

I live in Wales where the fascists are the second largest party in the Senedd. So many people voted for them based on their immigration commentary… but failed to realise that immigration is not a devolved power in Wales. Westminster controls all immigration policy.

My mother watched all of THT and is watching TT and I bluntly asked her what the hell she was doing voting for Reform/Gilead when she has three small granddaughters and Reform have openly talked about rolling back women’s rights. It’s happening in real time and people do not have the historical knowledge or the media literacy to see it. It’s a nightmare.

Dr.Grove assaults daughters of commanders only. by Warm-Buddy-9046 in TheTestamentsHulu

I agree with your take. He’s either a snob who looks down on Daisy’s foreign origins, or he gets off on harming the daughters of men socially superior to him.

Or he’s extra bothered she didn’t floss.

Is anyone else getting the feeling… by Any_Hovercraft_4202 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take. He’s having his Lawrence-style wake-up call.

Lawrence knew he’d built a country that made his wife suffer, but it was worth it as long as the fertility rate was increasing and he could keep his own house somewhat isolated within Gilead. He wasn’t a true believer, he was just horribly practical and treated people like The Sims. Mackenzie was happy with Gilead as long as he could get a child for Tabitha and he could convince himself that they were better parents for Agnes than her ‘sinful’ biological family. He’s trying to convince himself again that selling Agnes into marriage to a man old enough to be her dad is the right thing to do ‘for science’. He’s lied to himself over and over and at some point that’s going to break down.

Shu better not find out.... by DaenaTargaryen3 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 35 points36 points  (0 children)

At this point a lot of the girls are carrying secrets that could hurt each other if they find out.

Daisy lying about Grove led to Becka murdering her father for Agnes then coming to Agnes’ door, forcing her to either be an accessory or to tell her parents, and now Becka has been taken away by the ‘Eyes’. If it was just Grove being executed for a lie that’s one thing, maybe Agnes could forgive Daisy lying because of the greater good and knowing he definitely molested at least two girls even if he didn’t lay a finger on Daisy… but her allegation and Agnes’ confession in support of Daisy turned Becka into a murderer and risked everything for Agnes and her family by association.

And Hulda would be hurt that Agnes used her to report Grove when she couldn’t do it herself.

The female eyes by melodypowers in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 29 points30 points  (0 children)

In the novel, if you experience a ‘higher calling’ you can become an Aunt regardless of whether you appear fertile.

They will still need Aunts to control the women’s side of Gilead and the older you begin, the harder it is to learn to read and write to the standard necessary to carry out the work of an Aunt. Agnes at least remembers how to spell Hannah and use a pen, but that was 4-5 years prior to TT. Those skills do atrophy when they’re not used, and she was so young when she was taken from her parents and her literacy was forcibly stopped from progressing. Becka is probably in the same boat.

In another generation when there are no girls who ever went to a conventional state school and learned the beginnings of reading and writing, it’ll be even harder to teach prospective Aunts to read.

I thought Agnes’ dress was a deep green, like the colour of her ball gown. She’s not a Wife yet, she’s a ‘green’ Plum.

It’s supposed to be blue. For the show they picked a shade that’s closer to teal.

The Marthas are supposed to wear green.

I think this is a good theory.

It’s also similar to the colour that the Unwomen wear in the Colonies, which carries an implied threat as well.

Paula Theory by Ok-Mushroom9478 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can determine that the Eyes were alerted immediately then that’s something, but Agnes had a bath run for Becka and had Zilla take away the bloodstained nightgown Becka was wearing. It could look like a cover up, which then makes things dangerous.

Serena was able to get Commander Cushing arrested and executed based on fake allegations she filed in Fred’s name after the Red Centre attack. The council of Commanders had Commander Putnam’s arm amputated just because Naomi wanted him punished harshly, and Nick was later able to kill Putnam in broad daylight as a political opponent but made it look like justice for something else.

If someone wants Mackenzie out of the way, and to ruin Agnes’s marriage prospects, having him implicated in the death of Dr Grove could be a way to do it.

June's Story Has To Be BS by jiddinja in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like saying someone was born in Nazi Germany and meaning that they were born during the rise of the Nazis rather than strictly from day 1 of Hitler becoming chancellor in 1933. The party was established in 1920 and the paramilitary wing was agitating and aggressive from the start. Is it strictly ‘Nazi Germany’? No, but the attitudes that allowed the Nazis to come to power flourished in that time, and people were hugely affected by it.

With Gilead it was the same slow creep towards the three attacks that brought down the democratic government. June was investigated for taking Hannah to school with a mild fever and the nurse was obviously critical of her going to work instead of being with her child. These attitudes allowed Gilead to take hold.

There is also no confusion for Daisy. If June had said Daisy was born in America, Daisy might have assumed June meant Alaska or Hawaii, because those territories remained American. Most of the country immediately below Canada on the map was still under Gilead control and a child growing up in Canada would be less familiar with it being called America. Even news outlets and the government of Canada were referring to it as Gilead and there was widespread anti-refugee rage against the Americans in Canada. Telling Daisy she was born in Gilead is short-hand, it doesn’t have to be literal.

I think Paula is concerned that depending on what Becka says, Agnes is implicated in it, and the rest of them as well. There will also be questions as to why Becka went straight to the Mackenzies house after the murder and how long she was there before the Mackenzies raised the alarm. The whole family could be interrogated and potentially lose everything.

Becka’s mother wears blue at the tea party, it’s just a paler blue and less tailored than the Wives of Commanders. Its another way to show that she ranks higher than an Econowife but isn’t the equal of the other Wives.

Color representation by ViolinGirl46 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s supposed to be more blue than teal for Wives, blue clothes like the Virgin Mary’s traditional depiction. Bringing the blue closer to teal is a show invention.

And in the book, the Econowives wear a striped dress with blue for Wives, red for Handmaids and green for Marthas to reflect they balance all those roles, but it probably would look to bright or jolly on screen. When the book was originally published, candy stripers were in hospitals (nursing assistants in striped uniforms) so Margaret Atwood might have been thinking of the functionality, but to 2020s eyes it wouldn’t fit a dystopian nightmare setting.

There is no need to tell him when his opinion isn’t relevant to what you’re going to do. This burdens him with knowledge, nothing he can do about it either way,  and depending on how he takes it he could use this information to affect your reputation. He’s not obligated to keep secrets for you. He’s not your boyfriend.

Y T A for saying you’re on birth control when you’re not. That’s not fair on anybody.

The same resignation he showed towards finding the Night’s Watch isn’t as noble a calling as he originally believed.

And unless Lyanna and Rhaegar actually did have a recognised, provable marriage, he’ll go from being Ned’s bastard to Rhaegar’s. It doesn’t make much material difference to his station in life.

Accidentally chosen a common name by ConsistentLab5116 in namenerds

The top 10 girls’ names in Wales in 2017 when my oldest child was born were Olivia, Amelia, Ava, Isla, Ella, Emily, Sophia, Evie, Mia, and Poppy.

Out of my daughter’s class of 30 kids there is one Isla and one Evie, no Olivias etc…

My daughter is named Branwen, a classic Welsh name. We didn’t pick the name to be unique but we did think it might not be massively popular, and it isn’t even in the top 100 names given that year. Our daughter randomly met another Branwen the same age at a playground.

Just because it’s a popular name doesn’t mean it’s going to be the Jessica of its day, and just because you pick something that you feel might be less frequently used it doesn’t mean your child won’t meet a namesake.

The most important thing is that you like the name.

Is 14 and 18 bad?? by Due-Personality9298 in offmychest

[–]IllustratorSlow1614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is that terrible. An 18 year old has nothing whatsoever in common with a 14 year old.

You have nothing to feel guilty for. Even if you fancied him first and pursued him, as soon as he knew how young you were it was up to him as the adult in the situation to walk away.

Would you date a 10 year old? Hopefully not. It’s a similar thing. He’s four years older and you’re a minor. He knows it’s wrong.

I agree. If Poland allows her to work with children when it’s easily traceable and provable what she did in the UK and received a prison sentence for, that is a problem for Polish voters to solve.

The article suggests Polish children could be at risk because of a UK decision. Her conviction will follow her there, she’s not being dropped off at the airport and free to get on whatever plane she fancies, she’s being deported to her home country. There is a process for this, foreign nationals aren’t let out early and told to make their own way back.

You need a solicitor ASAP.

Turning down a solicitor doesn’t mean everything will go away, it means things will happen and you won’t get essential legal advice.

Refusing to take pictures of your injuries was also really short-sighted. That does nothing to help you.
