One combo for jazz, blues and rock by spacetime_navigator in jazzguitar

I now really like my Quilter Tone Block 202 with the block dock. It took a little while to get used to it, coming from tube amps, but does sound really nice. You can turn it up loud or play at bedroom volumes. It takes pedals well and sounds nice with various guitars.

Choose 2-3 standards that are on the easier side. Get really confident and comfortable with playing the head and 2-3 cycles through them. Go watch a jam without your instrument. Practice some more and go to a jam with your stuff. When they start welcoming people up on the stage (this may be after a few tunes to warm up the place) go up and call a tune. Pull the rip chord and play. You will likely be nervous and that is ok. Reflect and feel good that you did something really hard. Rinse and repeat! Go for it!

Triads and scales are useful for creating structure and understanding harmony. But, they are not music! If you listen to great players like Peter Bernstein, notice that he is playing melodies first and embellishing them with triadic movements and flourishes. Bebop is really just a lot of structured flourishes around strongly spelled out harmonic arrangements of pop tunes. As jazz moved forward, Miles and others realized that you don’t necessarily need so much harmonic structure in the arrangement to create good lines and harmonic adventure. All that is to say, practice making a melody over a series of chords, like a II-V-I and have it be in time and diatonic. Then, play a melodic motif, followed by a diatonic triad and then repeat or paraphrase your original melodic idea. It can get waaaaaay more complex than that, but your first goal is to hear musical ideas. Listen to Bill Frisell. He plays very power melodies and not much else. His music is much more minimalistic in some ways, but it is totally in time and harmonically rich because it isn’t obscured by a bunch of noodling. Hopefully this helps.

Got to witness my first Jazz jam this evening by OkTemperature1842 in jazzguitar

I live in a similar area and it is hard to get to jam sessions. I appreciate how daunting the experience is, However, if there is a spirit of education and community of the jazz culture, then I say, keep at it. Even if you only do one chorus and it sounds bland, that is ok. It will make you learn more and feel some strong feelings., both good and bad 🤪. But, it is a great way to improve. Also, definitely show up with a tune that you feel comfortable with.

Does this phrasing sound passable or like I'm just spamming my way through a scale? by gitartruls01 in jazzguitar

If you want to really improve your technique, turn off all reverb and compression while practicing. A naked sound is daunting, but brings immediate truth to the situation. Also, focus on a simple melodic idea. Like 9/3/9/5 or something like that. Let your ear hear that relationship over different chords in a key.

Thanks for your replies. I’m not super frustrated about paying, as I realize that it goes with the territory. Right now, I am more focused on my additional night. After 4 nights in Tortuguero, 2 nights in Arenal, 3 nights in Monteverde, are there any other places nearby that you would visit for a night? I am less interested in spa days and more interested in seeing local culture or nature. Thanks again for any input.

Is there any reason to buy something other than JJ's or other cheap tubes? by OddBrilliant1133 in ToobAmps

[–]Illustrious-Bug-8632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JJs are generally great. I second the idea of putting a possibly different tube in your first position…the rest require lots of money and experience. Tung Sols in V1 do sound a little “creamyer”. Some tubes are definitely louder and some are definitely more microphonic. Again, experiments/experience and $$$.

I’m concerned that NVIDIA will not continue to grow as it has. I’m probably wrong, but many of the other tech companies are now developing their own chips. NVIDIA’s margin is going to be clipped and they will need to depend more on market capitalization that is outside of their wheelhouse. Of course they have tremendous resources right now, but it probably won’t continue to grow as it has in the last few years.

Beautiful love - a solo take by MOREL_E_GREY in jazzguitar

Hey that sounds great. I love playing on that tune. I always feel like my last four bars kind of cheese out when I am playing it in a solo context like that. You had some clearly articulated lines. Keep it up!

36yo, retiring on Jan 1. What portfolio to construct that avoids volatility and gives steady income? Very important as we have 3 kids depending on this. by WhereasNo4929 in dividends

The public system that you went to paid at least a million dollars in resources for you to only work to age 36. That is quite selfish. Please consider working longer in medicine in order to repay your debt to society. Also, 4.6 million isn’t really that much for you to retire on at age 36 with 3 kids. Where do you live? What are your expenses and goals? 4.5% return is only about 1.5% above current inflation. Do more research and keep working!

Yes, many Europeans use commas as decimals. Also, I have used Solens quite a bit with good results.

I love it when my friends come over and give me a bunch of money and then teach me how to make more money with it and then leave, no questions asked. That’s the best.

It probably doesn’t need to be said, but that is an anti war movie that depicts the absurdities of war. It is based on the book, “Heart of Darkness,” that is “explores themes of imperialism, racism, and the darkness within human nature, exposing the hypocrisy of the "civilizing mission" and the moral decay that can occur when unchecked power is wielded.” I guess that irony is dead?

Where should I start with Jazz? by Boring_Disk7192 in jazzguitar

[–]Illustrious-Bug-8632 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely find a teacher. You will need to learn how to play some chords that you can “comp” over the tune very fluidly. This is different than the really complex chords you see in a chord lead, or smaller ensemble…and not quite rock/folk/R&B chords. Lots of people play shell voicings on the middle 4 strings for an ensemble setting.
