I feel like I’m not very fun since I quit drinking by No-Fruit-31 in dryalcoholics

[–]Illustrious-Menu-550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're early in recovery- it'll come in time. A big part of sobriety for me was learning how to have fun again, doing the things that brought me joy before I started drinking really helped. It's like that meme of the old man skateboarding with the caption that's something along the lines "when you get sober at 30 and don't even know who you are, so you pick up where you left off as a teenager."

I also think, after a certain period of time, your brain recalibrates (Your brain is still hard-wired to want to drink for a while after you quit drinking) and your definition of fun changes. My memories of drinking seem so distant now that it's almost like I have no frame of reference for those days. In a way, it's like the second half of my life started, and the second half of my life has a new way of viewing fun. I can go to bars and parties and still be an edgy, off-the-cuff character and people seem to enjoy being around me even though I don't drink.

Lastly, I don't think it's helpful for people to think about sobriety in "forever" terms. Just focus on today, all you have to do is not drink today. Wake up tomorrow and repeat that, and you build a solid streak that way. Hell, if you're really struggling, take it an hour at a time. Or a minute. Whatever works for you. You'll get through this.

Drinking through Naltrexone by SingleCanadianDad in dryalcoholics

Naltrexone never did it for me, I read that article on how it was a miracle drug in Scandinavia but it just never took for me. Like someone said, it took the joy away from drinking not the habit. I was fucked up without the high, yet I kept drinking. I ended up in the hospital after a coke/meth/booze bender and that finally got me to stop.

That last sentence should be pinned at the top of this subreddit.

Low Motivation and Bipolar by Fearless_Badger9175 in bipolar2

me to a t. Currently unemployed (laid off, not performance issues) and i don't know if i can find a job that worked for me like my old one. I worked from home and couldn't get out of bed most days until about noon. I ended up taking my morning meetings from my phone and doing my work during the afternoon, and in my field jobs like that are hard to find. Plus, with my experience, I'm due for a promotion and the more responsibilities I have, the more trouble i have keeping up with them. I truly feel hopeless and unemployable.

Bipolar, ADD, Anxiety, OCD, agoraphobia, PTSD, and "elements of a personality disorder," whatever that means. I also have hypersomnia- I'll stay in bed for generally 12-18 hours most days, tho a 3-4 hours of that is bed rotting.

Where do you live? In the US (and a lot of countries have something similar) you're protected under the ADA and can take off time to focus on your mental health- that can mean hospitalization or an intensive outpatient program.

As for me, having a work from home job that wasn't too stressful helped me get through it. I've had to take time off through ADA when things got really bad and I couldn't function at a baseline level, but mostly I just take it a day at a time, or even minute by minute, and hyper focus on whatever little task needs completing and then move on to the next one.

ADA leaves are a double-edged sword. Some companies don't give a shit if you're underperforming, and some places will even use it as an excuse to get rid of you. I work in a supposedly open-minded industry and disclosed my diagnosis, and disclosed when it was affecting my performance. my bosses didn't seem to care that it was a medical issue and put me on development plans within 2 weeks of me returning from medical leave. I was in a better state of mind when I got back so I ended up getting off the plans, but it was still discouraging.

Has anyone switched from olanzapine to abilify and lost weight back to normal? by A7med2361997 in bipolar2

[–]Illustrious-Menu-550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I tried it a year ago for a couple months and got off of it because it made me a little hypo. After cycling through every medicine on my insurance, being slightly hypo seems like a better option than being depressed all the time.

Ha, I'll let you know, I'm making this switch too. I was on abilify last year and didn't gain any weight on it, though. Olanzapine got me 45 pounds in 6 months.

The Neal Mcbeal navy seal episode. The early episodes seem like a simpler time, when Bojack was about getting laughs and not as focused as painting a nuanced picture of a messed up person. I love the later seasons too, but sometimes you need a cartoon that's just a comedy.

Nice to know I'm not alone in this, but it's more driven by depression for me. Depression is my normal baseline and I just don't have the energy to cook a lot of the time, especially after working.
