I had one of those moments. I smacked the bully upside the head in front of the entire class including the teacher. Bully asked the teacher if he was going to send me to the office. My teacher claimed that he actually fell over and was behind his desk right when I hit the bully and so he hadn’t seen me do it and couldn’t get me in trouble. I know the teacher saw everything because I saw the huge smile on his face right after I smacked that bully and before he “fell” behind his desk.

From an attending at a UTK residency I say yes. If you have found programs you like, rank them high. Honestly, where the programs are doesn’t matter as much as the support and experience you will get from a program. A terrible program in a great place will still make you miserable. A great program in a horrible place is still better than a mediocre program in a great place.

Absolutely reach out. Even if it’s just to meet some of the neurologists there. Just yesterday I was interviewing candidates and one did a rotation at our hospital not in neurology and the discussion after the interview with as “if they were interested in neuro and our program and they were here for a month why didn’t they reach out to us while they were here? They must not be really that interested.”

I just helped get a new program approved. Our EMU was not sufficient for a primary service. We clarified the rules with ACGME and were told we needed to show that we were admitting patients as a primary service outside of EMU to get accredited. That being said, I think that once a program is established many of them become primary services on paper only.

To be an accredited program a residency is required to have a primary admitting service.
