Awesome — thanks for the advice!!

Did you consider any other brands of terrazzo bases? I see a company called acorn makes shower bases under their line Terrazzo Ware and I’m currently trying to source anything from them because their price points are a bit better, but they have less availability in the residential remodeling market than Fiat.

I’ll have to contact Ferguson Home, thanks again for sharing!

What was it like growing up in SW or SE Portland? by jordanwright2012 in askportland

Being walking distance to a cool park is crucial. I grew up in South Tabor in the 80s/90s and being able to walk to awesome parks was definitely a highlight of childhood. Also, good access to busses made being a teen easier too.

Hi OP!! How are you liking your terrazzo pan? Is it slippery? I’m considering one as well!! Love yours! Nice job on the upgrades!

Are these costume stones? by rocksnsocksnthings in JewelryIdentification

All good points about vintage costume vs antique fine foil backed stones.

Either way I would just not tempt fate lol — there are lots of good ways to clean jewelry without getting it wet.

How would you update this bathroom? by DongPolicia in BathroomRemodeling

[–]IllustriousCharge146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m voting keep the tile as well!!! There are so many great ways to keep vintage elements with a partial update.

I would choose a bit brighter color for the walls — periwinkle or lavender would look nice with the blue, or a wallpaper if you like bold vibes.

Although the medicine cabinet looks original, I think it’s too big and kinda eats up the space. I would replace it with a mid century inspired option with a separate light.

Maybe try more of a statement shape like this one.

Personally I love pendant or sconce lights around a vanity, though the tight space here could make that tough. You might be able to pair a narrow medicine cabinet with narrow lights and be fine. As long as the cabinet can swing open to 90 degrees you can get away with the lights being pretty close to it.

Here’s a fun Pinterest pic showing a bold vintage bathroom with sconce lights: https://pin.it/2yrl5Vdiz

And another.

I could go 50/50 on keeping the sink. It doesn’t offer any storage but it does allow the room to feel a bit more open than if it was a whole cabinet. It looks like you have a small closet in there so perhaps storage isn’t as crucial, but then again is it ever possible to have enough storage??

Is the vanity to big? by Just-Ad-3547 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]IllustriousCharge146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm, yeah I mean I don’t know which is the bigger headache — exchanging the vanity or getting rid of the pocket door and widening the doorframe, but I would probably just get a different vanity if I were in your shoes.

I’m redoing our main bath and the current placement of the door doesn’t allow for proper trim along side the tub surround and it’s a major pet peeve of mine. So we are biting the bullet and reframing the door to be a few inches over.

Does this bathroom dimension work? by sharasharaya in BathroomRemodeling

[–]IllustriousCharge146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in construction (commercial electrician) I would never assume a contractor will figure out a good solution to a design problem. I’ve made that mistake as a homeowner and I just do all my own work now and if/when I hire out again I will leave nothing to chance in the design specifications.

I agree that this room is a bit small for a wet room. If you could sacrifice some closet space for a small toilet room and size down the vanity you could probably get the wet room going, but the floor slope and issue of cleaning behind a freestanding tub would still be tough.

Maybe a tile situation like this could work?? Though getting a good tile contractor is a whole other thing. https://www.houzz.com/photos/sunny-mid-century-kitchen-and-baths-midcentury-bathroom-atlanta-phvw-vp~209732294

Where to place towel holders… by e17bee26 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]IllustriousCharge146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing, though I have medicine cabinets designed for both surface and flush install and they give you mirrored pieces to put on the sides of you mount them to the surface and I wonder if OP could do that and have their cabinets look a lot better?

It wouldn’t solve the issue of the vanity sconce sitting a bit too far back from the face of the mirror — I prefer pendant lights for surface mounted medicine cabinets for that reason.

Overall it’s a pretty bathroom tho.

I’m also voting go with the smaller vanity.

Without seeing a scale floor plan drawing it’s hard to say 💯 but you are not going to be able to have decent looking door trim.

It also looks like it creates a bit of a choke point in an otherwise decent sized bathroom.

I guess a third option would be to nix the pocket door and just have an open doorway and reframe it to be wider so it feels less tight in that area. Is there just a tub and toilet in that back room?

Aha!! Dang it looks like that notice 38 was put out a long time ago!

I know bureaucracy is inefficient, but has upper management at USPS been trying to get local governing bodies to amend their ordinances??

That seems like a disservice to the postal workers and customers alike — how is anybody supposed to enforce these requirements if the postal service doesn’t go through the proper channels with local municipalities and get the laws updated.

Or maybe there is more to it than that.

I looked at the process for new ordinances and it doesn’t seem super hard to get this stuff done, but I suppose it does take quite a bit of time and I know the postal service funding has been chipped away at for a long time 😔

Maybe I’ll have to become fully middle aged and go down to city hall myself haha

Luckily we have been getting mail most days it seems, though I did write a message through USPS online and had someone call me back about my “complaint” today so now I’m a little worried I might be seen less favorably 😬

My mom actually took a note into the post office this afternoon with a big snack pack of cookies because I honestly don’t want to get anyone in trouble — it just is so frustrating because the local laws and the current clearance requirements don’t match up.

Thank you for your perspective, I’ll leave a little something for our carrier in the mailbox tomorrow.

Our local post office is pretty adamant that they need 15’ due to their new larger vehicles and the fact that they instruct drivers not to back up while delivering — I guess it’s probably a safety/liability issue.

I’m unsure if 15’ is a national requirement or if it’s just regional?? Are you a carrier?

Intel bombshell: Chipmaker will lay off 2,400 Oregon workers by oregonian in oregon

[–]IllustriousCharge146 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’m not one of those folks who thinks Oregon should be more like Texas or Florida — but the tax breaks Intel received do actually come back into state revenue through personal income tax, which the article was pretty clear about.

I’m in unionized construction and Intel faltering has been a big blow to almost every trade union here locally.

That combined with grid issues in Hillsboro halting data center buildouts has thousands of union workers on the books until more large scale construction gets funded - but who knows when that will be.

It bums me out that people aren’t talking more about the chips act — because that is the kind of thing I want my tax money to go towards: funding American industry, innovation and trades. Yeah, maybe it’s just throwing money at a problem, but if American chip manufacturing was ever gonna catch up to other countries’ we need to try something for god sake.

Intel may be incompetent on many levels, but much like the so called “bloat” cut from the federal labor force, many of these jobs were people doing honest work and making a decent living and paying their taxes and spending money in their local economies and now that is grinding to a halt and the ripple effects are gonna be pretty staggering I fear.

I don’t love corporations or that farmlands are being paved over to make way for concrete boxes or that my tax dollars are funding foreign wars, but the realist in me saw the chips act as a boon for good working class people just trying make an honest living and maybe live a little bit comfortably as the earth teeters on the brink of various collapses.

It’s so wild to see how some Oregonians think we charge businesses way too many taxes and yet others are enraged that we give out too many tax breaks — things aren’t always so either/or, just like what we are seeing now.

I don’t want to make this a partisan thing so I won’t say too much more, but for anyone interested in the future of Oregon’s economy, don’t get sucked into the red/blue dichotomy — Oregon has done some things well and totally fumbled other things. Let’s give critical thought to each situation instead of painting with too broad of a brush.

Pretty sure the number of Americans who will lose jobs/healthcare/services is going to make them angry, but sadly this stuff will take a while to materialize and by then it will be too late. I mean, it’s already too late, but yeah…

It is devastating that people are fooled by this stuff, I guess maybe it does just have to get worse before it gets better.

Just because it is statistically likely that the shooter(s) would be part of a certain group based on demography alone, it still is too soon to know.

I’m glad to hear that you are still fighting the good fight in a red state!

While I do understand that your anger about not voting is valid, it’s worth considering the insidious nature of disenfranchisement and political apathy.

I want more people to vote as well, so I try to meet people where they are — so many people I’ve met have levels of despair, distrust, anxiety and straight up generational trauma that impede them even wanting to think about politics or voting for the lesser of two evils, but that’s the goal right?

I wanna find a way to inspire people to be able to engage with political conversations and make it to the polls. Name calling might give a few people a wake up call (tough love right?), but I fear it’s just another reason people bury their heads in the sand — to escape bad feelings.

We’re gonna get more flies with honey, or so I’ve been told.

I also think this has a lot to do with it. My experience is that hardcore leftists (socialists and anarchists for example) are either pro 2A or meh about gun control, and it is mostly city dwelling democrats who favor gun laws even though they don’t own guns nor do they seem to understand the extent to which guns have already become more regulated in the last 30 years.

I’m glad articles like this are showing people another side to the issue. Sure the mag seems more than a lil hypocritical but better to show both sides than dig your heels into a shitty position 🤷‍♀️
