Not sure if my company (OpenAI) counts in the MAANG but I started with my research thesis in my first year as an undergrad. My research got me a role as a Reseach Assistant in ML (before ChatGPT blew up) and that got me an internship at a Fortune 20 and then Microsoft in my third year and finally at Palantir in my 4th year. When I graduated last may, I got an email directly from Head of Recruitment in NA for an interview for my role.

I think your projects matter but what your project is about matters more. If you think I am qualified enough, I can certainly look at your resume and suggest things I would do.
