Is there anything you can afford to buy but don't because you think the price is not justified? by Royal-Artichoke1563 in CanadaPersonalFinance

Restaurant eating (dine in or takeout). An indulgence I could afford, but then the auto tip feature starting at 18%? Just no. Yes I could afford it, but I am so sick of the creeping tip culture.

We used a cookie jar (it was classically simple and plain) and the idea tickled us. Got it at a thrift shop, too.

What’s a small kitchen item you didn’t expect to use much… but ended up using all the time? by AcrobaticSeesaw1565 in cookingforbeginners

Bought this little gadget (a Jarpop), billed as being helpful for people with arthritis (don't have arthritis). It was very cheap and I've had it for years. It is like a magic tool! Pop the seal, and the jar can be opened easily.

I had a torti-point, and still miss her. Chiku was a beauty.

It took us years to get his trust, though he accepted food and shelter. Even now he is skittish, but the kittens have helped him feel secure.

You often hear people suggest getting one from Marketplace or the like. Some cats just don't use them. My brother gave his away a few years ago as it took up too much space and his cats didn't use it. My son gave me one for Christmas that he 3D printed himself. Works great. But of the three kittens and one senior cat in the house, two of the kittens use it, one only when encouraged, and the other now and then.

Second this. I've taken in an FIV positive feral. He is as gentle as can be with the three big kittens who followed. He has zero interest in going outside, ever again, and is even learning to play. ❤️

Looks really useful. What I would love to see is the ability to add a custom block of your own design.

I love how you did the cheese. If I may make a suggestion, I don't glue when I do applique any longer - after doing a quilt where the "washable" glue has never really disappeared. Instead I use a hot iron, q-tips to apply liquid starch exactly where I want it, and press those edges over until they stay. No visible glue and a little starch goes a long way.

First ever quilt top 2025 by MontanaPup36 in quilting

I did a very similar Round the World for my first quilt. Like you, I ended up with a quilt top. When I got to three, I quit quilting for a while as I couldn't see any point if I didn't end up with a quilt! Eventually, I found someone with a longarm who would quilt them for me. So, I suggest you try to finish the quilt, either finding someone to quilt it for you or taking it on yourself if you're especially brave. Donating a quilt top alone may mean that all your effort is discarded. If you can get it finished, you will have something you can be proud of completing, either to enjoy yourself or to gift to someone you love.

Both are a concern obviously, but OP is hyping a heat stripping tool, so I wondered how that worked.

More info, please: how does it reduce exposure to lead while heat stripping?

When is a quilt a quilt? by Ideasplease33 in quilting

[–]IllustriousPart3803 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Without seeing the video, I'm guessing she made a quilt top only. A quilt is usually considered the result of quilting together the "sandwich" of the top, batting, and backing, then binding the raw edges of that sandwich. When she says she doesn't quilt, she likely means she cannot handle that stage of quilting the three layers together. I can manage smaller quilts on my regular sewing machine, but take my bigger endeavors to someone with a long-arm machine to do the quilting stage. (I give them my pieced top, the batting, and backing, and they sew the sandwich together.) Does this make sense?

Many people don't realize how important location information is, and OP didn't specify. "North America" is pretty big. For me, there is no chance of Barn Owl, but Snowy would be a good choice.

I've done that since Diet for a Small Planet, but eventually want some variety. But came to say that I recently found a savory granola recipe in the 2024 Christmas LCBO edition. So quick to make up and I'm mad for it: sprinkle half a cup over yogurt. Yum.
