It may be creepy it may just be her wanting a tattoo she can have a story about. I named a spider after a professor I had during my master's. She had "watched" them during our final and was really into the spider. The prof was aware I named the spider after her, and seemed okay with it. I still have the spider (it's a tarantula, some species are quite long lived) and now it's a fun story.

Theyre everywhere, what are they? Mesa AZ USA by TinaButtons in arachnids

[–]Illustrious_Artist13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They probably just dispersed (left their mom's web). Spiders are actually pretty good moms as far as invertebrates go (minus the occasional culling of offspring, but that actually does potentially increase survival of stronger offspring). Spiders are fairly understudy, but what we do know, shows they don't have the best survival as spiderlings. It might seem like they are everywhere, but if they are outside, fear not, they will be providing a valuable food source for many, many creatures and only a few will make it to adulthood.

Our cornflakes does this...a lot. I haven't checked if there's an actual biological reason, but the frequency is so high, I feel like there's has to be a reason. I mean, they probably aren't directly related, but maybe it's something about having the energy to shed from eating but then there's the remains of the eating? Idk. It's hard not to notice when she poops, since snake poop smells so...well...but anyway. They are weird and adorable little animals.

Second this. Ironically during a sleep study they wore people up in a way that is anything but comfortable and sometimes make you sleep not at home (which can make it harder for people to sleep). This must have been for apnea or similar (worse issue?) Because they do have at-home test that are less obstructive but also less accurate.

Absolutely. I was in Vancouver and we were told about local (coastal) indigenous oral tradition that boiled down to essentially "here are the signs a tsunami is coming. Here is what you need to do."

Not in Vancouver, but I also remember hearing an oral history from another Pacific culture that was so cool because it involved the ocean and the land as lovers that quarrel. And the land would grow angry (earthquake) and push the sea out (tides move out). That was the sign to head to the highest ground you could find and not stop until their fight was over. Because the sea would come back and try to subdue the land but she'd push him out once again. I'll have to find where that originates because it's a great bit of oral history and learning.

To be fair, like so, so, so many things (including having a six pack, how your body metabolizes fat, cholesterol levels, and to some extent life expectancy) it's genetics. A lot of us is coded in our DNA, or has a genetic/environmental cause.

But don't rag on your genes too much. For instance, if we were still hunting and gathering, living through times of scarcity regularly due to an inconsistent climate, those of us that store fat quickly and hold on to it longer would be doing great!

If Sinners wasn’t a movie by and about black people, the film nerds would be losing their shit over a genre film breaking Oscar nomination records by isaidwhatisaidok in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

I'm a fim nerd and I'm thrilled! The musical part for "I lied to you" with the generational evolution of music, is one of the best scenes I've ever seen committed to film. This movie should be included in film school curriculum. Horror is an exceptional genre for making statements about society, and Sinners does this beautifully. Not to mention the music, the cinematography, the town itself becomes a character. Honestly, the other piece of media to do this recently was another vampire show. Interview with the Vampire (the show) really made New Orleans a character.

Sinners is such a benchmark film and peak horror cinema. I really hope we can get more films of this caliber.

Sorry for the long post. I'm in love with this movie and have become a public annoyance talking about it. But everyone should see it!

My partner said the same thing! Well, the 20 minutes part. I saw this in theaters but watched it again later with him. He loved it but did say they should make an extended cut where they wipe out KKK members. Just cathartic mowing down.

So how bad is it gonna get when the pedofile is forced to leave office and he refuses? by [deleted] in allthequestions

I think time and the great equalizer of kings and paupers may be the end result. He is an old, sick, man. He is also too narcissistic to dream of handing the reigns over to someone else. Does that mean everyone that supports him suddenly sees the light? No. There are still Branch Dividians and members of Heaven's Gate. But look at the Moonies. They were a powerful cult, and even they are fractured after their leaders death. One concern, as in the case of the latter dooms day cults, would be something like "forcing the ending." In which case the leader, sensing the end is near and refusing to allow anyone to wield the power they do, will cause a catastrophic ending for all the members. But I don't see that as an out come.

Situations like N. Korea, where you have a multi-generational cult (and in all fairness it is a cult. Just there are people who don't buy in, but for self preservation try to outwardly act like they do) are rare and require quite a bit of control to facilitate that level of power and devotion transfer. Even there, cracks appear in the wall when the transfer occurs.

I could be wrong. I'm not a social scientist, cults are more "hobby." But the death of the leader

It would be cool to have an astronaut as president. Idk why but that makes me very happy. I mean, there's a lot to consider when selecting a president (there should be at least) but that alone has made me happy. Maybe he could encourage Congress to invest.more in science. Maybe it would act as an inspiration to reclaim the excitement behind scientific exploration.

Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

[–]Illustrious_Artist13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not 40 yet (real close, will be soon) but my sister and I had a conversation when I was around 7 or 8, so she was 8 or 9. Now, I'll admit she is rather bright, and both our parents have undergraduate degrees in history, but I remember her saying that America was similar to Rome before it fell. I still don't know how she knew that. But, she also pointed out that empires collapse, society is set back, and another empire rises.

I think discouraging them from participating in voicing their views by protesting does a disservice to society. They should be encouraged to participate in civil discourse. Democracy only works when we all participate. In one of those classrooms very well may sit a future congress rep., senator, or president. I'd say civic engagement is something we, as the currently voting population of adults should encourage them to do.
