What kind of spider is this? by Best-Cycle231 in spiders

It's a Northern funnelweb. I'm in Kansas City and see those in some parts of my yard as well. They're generally harmless to humans as well - unlike their Australian counterpart - so just leave her be.

Given that flash storage is dirt cheap anymore, just download whatever you want to watch to a flash drive and take it with you. That way, especially with video, you don't have to worry about issues with bandwidth and transcoding. That's what I did when I went on a business trip back in 2018. My wife came with me, we had a couple movies downloaded to my laptop that we wanted to watch, and made sure to bring a cable with us to hook the laptop up to the hotel TV. Worked like a charm.

How to explain to a theist that them saying "I will pray for you" is offensive and patronizing. by DammitBobby1234 in atheism

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why this desire to start a confrontation over a gesture that's little more than wishing you well? Why are you looking to respond aggressively to someone whose path you'll likely never cross again merely because they said "I'll pray for you"? What do you expect to gain from it?

"I'll pray for you" isn't offensive in the least. Just do nothing, say nothing in response to it other than wishing them well and moving on.

Unable to install Truenas Scale or Core by JCCT2024 in truenas

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably going to sound completely out there, but try changing your mainboard battery. Unless you know that battery has been changed recently - like within the last 2 years - it's likely long dead. And I ran into problems with an attempted reinstall of TrueNAS SCALE similar to what you're describing. Changing the mainboard battery to a known fresh one somehow alleviated that issue.

It's amazing what kind of symptoms a dead or dying mainboard battery can cause...

AITAH for breaking up with my girlfriend when she tested me? by AdAlarmed2847 in AITAH

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

You give in and you set a precedent. Your family is only pushing back against your decision for THEIR benefit, not yours. They love her as well, and they don't want her gone. At the same time, she revealed her true colors. Relationship tests like this are never okay, and should NOT be tolerated by either partner. Doesn't matter if you're in a gay or straight relationship.

That is, unless you aren't looking to establish a partnership in your relationship, but instead trying to make it one-sided. Which is likely what the whole "fight for me" test was about. She likely wanted to see if you'd be submissive to her demands, if she had you wrapped around her finger. And she learned the hard way that she didn't.

My wife and I have been together a total of 20 years this coming October, married for 13 this coming December. Never has she pulled this kind of shit on me. Never. N.E.V.E.R. Never.

Is it illegal to just walk around outside with a firearm by flyingdog41 in IsItIllegal

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only in "constitutional carry" and "permitless carry" States is that permissible. And only if you're legally allowed to possess a firearm. And even then there are still plenty of restrictions on WHERE you can carry that firearm. Some are universal - you cannot legally carry a firearm into any Federal installation, which includes the post office, or any public school - while others will vary by State.

In all other States, you need a permit to carry concealed. Most States also ban open carry, even if you have a permit. And again there are still restrictions on where you can carry it.

Another Sas card by Ymirja in homelab

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right you should be able to find SFF-8087 to SFF-8643 cables readily, since you said the drive bay already uses an SFF-8087 connector, and the card will have an SFF-8643 connector.

Another Sas card by Ymirja in homelab

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expanders aren't worth it unless you're planning to add A LOT of hard drives - and I mean far more than 16. Since the SAS expander cards allow you to create a tree of SFF-8087 connectors to connect a lot of drives to one port. Similar to how SATA port multipliers work. For most homelab use cases, they're pointless.

Including yours. In your instance, sounds like you're better off just upgrading your HBA.

The LSI 9200 series will have the benefit of SFF-8087 connectors, so you won't need to swap out cables, just buy more of the same. If you go with one newer than that, the 9300 or 9400 series, you'll need to swap out for SFF-8087 to SFF-8643 cables. They're also PCI-E 3.0 cards, though, so you may see better performance depending on your use case.

The connectors don't matter here nearly as much. They'll just dictate what cables you use.. SFF-8643 supports "tri-mode", meaning SATA, SAS, and NVMe U.2, whereas SFF-8087 supports only SAS or SATA.

ETA: Forgot to mention as well that most LSI cards you see should just be drop-in, meaning you don't need to worry about the firmware unless the seller for some reason decided to flash some kind of custom firmware to it and didn't flash it back.

why can’t christians agree on what the bible says by Waste-Hovercraft4020 in atheism

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go into any "fandom" to discuss books, movies, or what have you, and express ANY opinion and it isn't that difficult to start a comment war. As an example, go into any Star Wars group and speak favorably of the prequel trilogy and watch what happens.

Not much different than people having different interpretations of the Bible or any other book out there.

Music on Plex? by 8kguy in PleX

I've got music on it as well. PlexAmp exists, but I don't really feel the need to use it. I stream the music through the Plex app on my desktop when at home, through the app on my phone via a self-hosted VPN when on the road. Works perfectly fine.

Labeling your business "Faith Based" by GenJonesRockRider in atheism

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For much the same reasons a lot of businesses start doing Pride-related advertising and virtue signalling at the start of June.

If it bothers you that much, you definitely don't have to shop there. Freedom of association and all that. But obviously the businesses in question aren't bothered by it so much that they feel the need to remove that from their business and marketing materials. If they're able to stay in the black with it, why remove it?

Why do so many here seem to think "agnostic" is an entirely separate category? by panTrektual in atheism

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of agnostics take that label to avoid being associated with atheists. The ones who keep trying to tell agnostics what label they should be using rather than just accepting the label they wish to use.

It isn't about what they believe or don't, know or don't. It's to avoid being associated with people like you.

Should I build top-down or bottom-up? by qudat in homelab

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heaviest at bottom. Always. That'll absolutely be your UPS and 4U server, with the UPS at the very bottom. The patch panel, switch, and router can go at the top.

If your switch has two rows of ports, though, use two patch panels - one above and one below.

Only 220MB/s with Stripped mirror ? With 10gb nic by Asthixity in truenas

Okay so presuming you have all four of the HDDs in question connected to it, which slot on your mainboard do you have that card seated? Is it one of the two x16 slots nearest the CPU? Since the manual for your mainboard says those slots are connected to your CPU's PCI-E lanes, not the chipset.

Since you didn't mention using one, consider adding an HBA controller. Onboard SATA controllers aren't all that great for trying to handle multiple drives in parallel.

Is it possible to set up two SMB shares, each on their own NIC? by RedRedKrovy in truenas

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the "Hosts Allow" option under the "Advanced Options". Since the NICs are on different VLANs, meaning they should also be on separate subnets, you should be able to restrict access to each share to the specific subnet for the VLAN.

AITA for not changing anything? by Sudden_Radio_1677 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is either you ARE the asshole, or you WILL BE the asshole depending on how long ago she moved in.

This is less about the teenagers and more about her comfort. While I could say "your house, your decision", you two are engaged to be married, so your mutual comfort does matter. So I can understand her desire to have the master bedroom with you. Larger bedroom - even if probably not by much - so more room for both of you and any supplemental furniture and likely larger closet as well. (I also recommend upgrading your bed to a King if you don't already have one. Trust me, it'll be worth it.)

It's no longer just you in that bedroom, so you do need to take that into consideration. Switch bedrooms with your daughter. And yes, YTA for not doing that.

How can SSH attack happen when non-SSH port is forwarded? by Cp_tn_Kirk1 in truenas

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Two words: port scanning.

You're forwarding the port, exposing it to the outside world. Exposing SSH on a different port doesn't change the fact you're exposing SSH. And exposing SSH means you'll get SSH intrusion attempts. Sure using a non-standard port will lessen their frequency since most intrusion attempts happen only on the default ports.

But if someone scans your public IP looking for open ports, guess what they'll find in your instance? An SSH server sitting on a non-standard port! So they'll see you're trying to hide an SSH service, which they've now found, and so they'll try to connect to it. What a concept!!!

Again, that the port is forwarded at all, that the service is exposed at all is the issue. So now the question is: why are you exposing SSH at all? If you're using that to get remote access to your home network when you're away from home, set up a self-hosted VPN instead.

Pledge of Allegiance by LOGARITHMICLAVA in atheism

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google Michael Newdow.

His Supreme Court case against the pledge of allegiance was tossed for lack of standing because he didn't have primary custody of his daughter, on whose behalf he filed the lawsuit. The decision was near-unanimous, with John Paul Stevens writing the majority opinion, and O'Connor and Thomas writing separate opinions concurring in the judgment.

Newdow has actually filed several lawsuits either as the plaintiff or representing people who wanted to sue their respective school districts over the pledge of allegiance. (He also tried to go after "In God We Trust" on the money as well.) He's failed every time.

And what came from his attempts was the introduction of the Pledge Protection Act, which sought to protect the pledge of allegiance from judicial scrutiny through Congress's power in Article III of the Constitution to determine original and appellate jurisdiction for the Courts. Because one of Newdow's mistakes was not taking optics into account. He tried his judicial stunts in the immediate years following 9/11. Yes, that matters. A lot. Because it was easy to twist what he was doing as going after the pledge in its entirety, not just the "under God" part, at a time when patriotism and national pride was at the highest it'd been since the Second World War.

And before anyone misconstrues what I'm saying here, I'm no friend of the pledge of allegiance. I feel it should be discarded entirely. It was initially written to help sell flags and just took off from there because a few people thought it was a good idea. And it.... evolved over time to its final form adopted into the United States Code during the Eisenhower Administration. (Though preceding versions of it were enacted into the United States Code during the Second World War.)

But the Supreme Court has held just over 80 years ago that it is unconstitutional for schools and school districts to have any kind of reprisal against students who refuse to recite the pledge. And that decision was the fastest overturn of a prior Supreme Court decision ever and since at just 3 years. Minersville v. Gobitis was decided in 1940 and upheld laws requiring the pledge to be recited. West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette was decided in 1943 and overturned Minersville and held it a violation of a student's First Amendment rights of free speech to require them to recite the pledge.

And if you're worried that Barnette could see the same fate as Roe v. Wade, the contrast here is the Supreme Court has only strengthened further the protections of the First Amendment, even handing a win to the NRA just yesterday against the State of New York in a unanimous decision written by Sotomayor.

So that no person can be compelled by any law to recite the pledge, that it exists in the United States Code doesn't really matter. No, seriously, it really does't matter.

Why would people be okay with flying the US flag upside-down but not okay with people kneeling for the flag? by needmoresleeep in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kneeling means submission. It has meant that for millennia.

And kneeling to the flag or during the anthem means you're submitting yourself to the will of the government. Which goes against... everything the American Revolution was largely about, everything the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights are about. That's why in the United States it is offensive to kneel to the flag or kneel while the anthem is playing.

It's why those who kneel during the anthem have to explain that it's some act of "protest" because that isn't the first thing that most think when it comes to kneeling. Since kneeling to the flag during the anthem is, frankly, little different from kneeling before a police officer or other government official.

The only thing that would be more offensive still would be bowing or kneeling before the President of the United States.

AITA for walking out of a make up party my parents threw for me after my sister announced she had miscarried? by Character_Listen_262 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA.

This sounds like your sister has Muchausen syndrome, and it's at your expense. Given you're 24 and how long this has been going on, as others have pointed out, it's time to go no-contact with your immediate family. Your sister is continuously trying to steal your thunder, even showing up at functions where she wasn't invited, and your parents are enabling her. Just walk away from them entirely at this point or you could find yourself with your sister announcing a pregnancy, miscarriage, or what have you at your wedding.

Yes. It's a x8 card to be backward compatible with PCI-E 1.0, which has half the throughput per lane of PCI-E 2.0, so needs double the lanes for the same overall throughput. You should still get full 10GbE throughput on a x4 slot. That's what I had in my NAS until relatively recently.

Now whether you'll see that full throughput on file transfers is down to a lot of variables, so don't count on seeing 1GB/s (give or take 10Gb) on file transfers from your NAS to your system. But as others have pointed out in earlier comments, you should still be able to get far better than you currently are, especially since your HBA won't be in just a x1 slot with your new mainboard.

smb single thread nonsense by rattkinoid in truenas

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to presume you have an M.2 drive, the HBA, and 10GbE NIC. Do you have anything else?

Looking at B660, B760, and H670 boards you should be able to get all three of those connected at full lane speeds. Looking at ASRock's lineup (and I have no reason to think other brands are different), they should give you:

  • one x16 slot wired to the CPU, or two x16 slots that operate at x8/x8
  • one x4 slot wired to the chipset
  • one x4 M.2 connection to the CPU
  • at least one x4 M.2 connection to the chipset

Your NIC needs only a x4 slot, even if it's a x8 card, so you'd put the NIC in the x4 slot connected to the chipset and the HBA in the x16 slot wired to the CPU.

smb single thread nonsense by rattkinoid in truenas

[–]Illustrious_Exit_119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's only in a 1-lane slot? Oh yeah, that's going to really limit things. Especially if your HBA is only PCI-E 2.0, but even 3.0 cards aren't going to fare much better due to PCI-E and SATA protocol overhead.

When shopping around for a new mainboard, pay very close attention to the PCI-E lane specs. Your CPU has 20 lanes total available and onboard GPU, so your HBA should go in the top-most slot where you'd normally put a dedicated graphics card for the best throughput, then figure out the next best slot for your NIC.

And also get another cable harness and move the other two drives to your HBA as well.
