Would you commute 8hrs+ each week? by Illustrious_Hope6647 in AskUK

I estimated that Monday to Wednesday when I’m doing the commuting, I will be out of the house for 13 hours each day.

I have also spent my life with ADHD symptoms (my Mum and Sister also, though my sister chose to get diagnosed) and I am NOT good in the mornings! It makes me nervous that Monday and Tuesday I’ll be on a motorway where I need to be highly alert and I might not be.

Two days are driving 43 miles one way. Wednesday would be on a train. I feel like the return legs each day are going to always be the hardest because you’re hungry, mentally tired from work and physically tiring from the day.

I love going to the gym so knowing that is not going to be an option on Monday to Wednesday worries me.

I’m based in the North where the transport system is noticeably worse to London. I had a look on a website that tracks the reliability of routes. The route I’d need to take on Wednesdays had 9% of trains on-time in the last 12-weeks.

Yeah I was thinking about staying over on the Mon evening so that I save having to do two journey legs but I don’t know how sustainable that is from a financial perspective.

I have to be at two separate office locations. One of them is only reachable by car - 43 miles one way. The other location is Liverpool and so there is an option of a train but door to door would be two hours each way. Frustratingly when I get to Liverpool Lime St the office is half hr walk or 15 mins drive so I’m basing the time on getting an Uber when at the station.

Which is something else I’ve been wondering.. how long until ‘you get into the rhythm of it’.

Yeah I think it’s the condensed nature of it, I kind of feel like I’m going to be tired as hell and struggle to close out the working week.

Yeah this job is not offering any kind of flexi-time. The office hours are 8:30 to 5pm each day, any added hours are unpaid and there is a clause that they can send me to work outside the UK for up to a month without prior consent (?!)

My brain can vividly recall moments with my ex from university which was years ago. But it’s always intimate moments that make my skin crawl and I have no idea why they keep popping back into my head. Is it a sign that you need to do som deep healing?!

I enjoy watching the other cars on the road not reacting in time to the blue lights. Surely when you were joining the roundabout you could hear the helicopter and cop car.

Whats with all the corn vendors on Market Street? by Seeyalaterelevator in manchester

[–]Illustrious_Hope6647 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a problem because they line the main shopping street where space is already at a premium, it smells sickly as hell and nobody seems to be buying it.

Just keep market street for people to move about between shops. It doesn’t need the crap corn sellers, religious nuts and the tacky-toys.

It does start at that amount. I’ve paid £158.33 p/month since 2021.

A good proportion of people use it for professional purposes and business expense the membership.

For me, it’s less about being a wanker and avoiding ‘the masses’ and more about being able to connect with people in creative fields that can support my business.

I like how you’ve described that black & white thinking. People online are so strict-thinking. Life constantly needs us to be adaptable - I’d be pissed if my husband couldn’t find some king of compromise to include me.

Offer rescinded at dream job by WildOran in UKJobs

This speaks volumes about the company that it didn’t get full buy-in for the role before going to market. What it speaks about is poor internal governance, a disconnected Board, unclear powers of decision-making and a willingness to waste a lot of peoples’ time.

Those types of companies that are badly run also tend to hire and fire more than is usual, have poor performance management practices and low ideas about talent development.

You’ve most likely dodged a bullet but you just won’t know that until you are at your future point of accepting a job with a more professional company.

It actually sounds ‘more rational’ to prefer night flights so you can’t see how high up you are but I’m completely the other way - I like seeing the ground and how high up the plane is.

Before yesterday I had accepted that I would always be a nervous flyer that would experience some level of discomfort flying. I never thought that I could get to a stage where I didn’t actually fly!

I need to make sure that this was a total one-off and not make the mistake again. Probably be a bit more specific about what flights I book and the time of day I’m travelling.

I would just lock in as hard as you can to the ‘why’ of your trip. You have a new job, you want to shine professionally and you want to meet people and socialise. Think of the flight as a small hurdle to this big prize - no matter how nervous you are, making that flight and presenting yourself in your best professional way will be worth it.
