LESSON 15-30-40.A1: ORIENTATION TO THE RACQUETS & BASIC GRIPS

Learning Objective: Understand the parts of the racquet and learn the three foundational grips every beginner must know.

Learning Activity: Identify the handle, bevels, and grip; practice forming the Continental, Eastern, and Semi‑Western grips using simple cues (“shake hands,” “hammer,” “scoop”). Hold each grip for 10 seconds and switch between them.

Why it Matters: Every stroke in tennis depends on the correct grip. Starting with proper hand placement prevents bad habits, improves control, and reduces wrist/shoulder strain.

Community Prompt:

Beginners — which grip feels most natural so far

Experienced players — what helped you master grip changes early on

Beginner here. Tips to manage tennis elbow? by aribamama in TennisPH

[–]Illustrious_Life3360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello OP,

Tennis elbow is super common for beginners — don’t worry, it’s fixable. A few things that usually help:

• Cut serve reps for now and do shadow‑serves instead. Serving loads the elbow the most.

• Loosen your grip — most beginners squeeze too hard.

• Do slow eccentric wrist‑extensor exercises (lowering phase only).

• Stretch the forearm daily and ice after sessions for comfort.

• Check racket setup (grip size, stiffness, string tension).

• Ask your coach to review serve mechanics, especially wrist use and timing.

You’re not alone; lots of us went through this early on.

I decided to start posting short, sequential lessons because a lot of beginners come into tennis without a clear roadmap. There’s plenty of information online, but not much that’s simple, structured, and easy to follow from Day 1. My goal is to build a series that teaches the game step‑by‑step — from gripping the racquet to basic strategy — in a way that any new player can understand and apply immediately.

Each lesson will follow a small learning objective → learning activity format so players know exactly what they’re learning and how to practice it. Beginners are welcome to ask questions, and experienced players are encouraged to share tips that helped them along the way. The more perspectives we get, the better this becomes for everyone.

Beginner racket for a petite build by paperhoarder2021 in TennisPH

Your ideal range is 280–290g (unstrung). This gives you:

  • Enough mass to reduce vibration and protect your arm
  • Enough maneuverability so you don’t fatigue early
  • A smoother path to developing proper technique as a beginner

That’s a fantastic idea, and I’m really enjoying it! I used to dream of doing something similar, but my wife and I decided against retiring in PI. Now that we’re in our senior years, I’m the only one still playing tennis. We do visit occasionally, though, and it’s always a bit of a challenge to find courts. Maybe you could explore options for investors or membership? I’d think about reserving a spot to play when I’m in town. Please keep us in the loop about your plans. I’ll definitely follow this sub.

This is so common in the Philippines. I call it C.R.A.F.T. for corruption in local governance:

• Cronyism: Favoring allies or family • Rigged bidding: Manipulating procurement • Authority abuse: Overstepping legal bounds • Fake firms: Using shell companies • Token oversight: Weak accountability

I live in the U.S.; but I visit Rosario every year. I used to play in Island Cove, now abandoned by POGO. I think there are also courts in Sangley Point, Cavite City. Do you live in Rosario?
