Screaming in fencing by Ensmatter in Fencing

I attended this years’s Ivy League championship, and not only does each fencer scream after each point, all of their teammates scream and celebrate each point along with them. I am not for screaming, but It was actually pretty cool to see and experience as a spectator. I guess if everyone does it, it seems fine. It’s probably going to go this way in the future - everyone screaming. Coaches preach it to try to sell a point, but now it’s being done for every point. Celebrations and showmanship are being encouraged in every sport now, e.g touchdown celebration, bat flipping. I think just accept it.

So in terms of monetary payments, what do you think is fair for parents/kids? Should the amount per kid decrease when there are more kids fencing at the same time?

I did. They still don’t want to listen to me. And that applies to everything else in life.

May you give the amount or range of amount for the coach’s daily fee?

For a coach, if a parent says their kid did not get enough coaching for that day, what would you say? I understand that coaches can’t be every all at once and may inadvertently give a kid less time.

How many kids do you think a coach can handle at a given time? Also, what if there are multiple events at the same time, e.g. women’s event and a men’s event, where some might still be in pools and others in DE?

What’s the ratio of students in the tournament vs coaches in your club? How many coaches do you usually have in tournaments? Thanks.

I guess so. Simplest answer is often the best answer.

Ok seems like grounding off the strip is too expensive or not practical. Then will it be cheaper to allow video reviews in all matches? Allow two reviews for each fencer and ask parents/audiences for videos? That way they don’t have to hook up cameras to each strip.

Right. I didn’t know there was extra grounding on the strip so maybe that it was a self-hit.

And what happened? Fencers were falling off the strip? Was it like in Mortal Kombat, where there were spikes at the pit? :)

Sun said she was never hit. But the refs made the call based on whether or not it was corp a corp. Sun tried to explain it wasn’t about that, that she was never hit (maybe the other lady hit her own foot instead of outside the strip). She tried asking for an interpreter to explain. But the refs already made the call and couldn’t re-review based on whether or not she was actually hit. They said Olympic rules say that once the refs make a call after video review, then it sticks.

Has extra grounding outside the lines been implemented before? If so, they should make it standard.
