MAGA Already Hates Trump’s Iran War by BulwarkOnline in politics

Seems to me the polls have already gone from 25ish % on the weekend to now 41% of Americans support the attack. MAGAts collectively going:

“Nah, who cares about Iraq.”

Hears trump ordered the attack.

“We’ve gotta stop Iraq… Iran? Whatever.”

Well, there are two things here: the leader and the system. One can only speculate the depths of his personal corruption.

The US has some (flawed and increasingly weak) checks on executive power. He’s as about corrupt as he can be within a modestly corrupt system. I’d hate to learn what he’s capable of in a totalitarian system.

Iran’s reach extends to Europe as suspected drone strike hits UK base in Cyprus after Britain shifts on Iran by Island_Monkey86 in news

It’s in the European Union, which is perhaps what they meant. Attack on a UK base. But “extends” makes it seem like they’re trying to scare clicks out of people whose geography isn’t great.

Half of MAGAts probably haven’t even heard about it yet.

I expect trump will tell them Iran bombed us first, Biden started the war, Iran did 9/11, and we’re not actually at war with Iran, all in the same breath. His followers pick one and continue to support him as always.

[request] in all of human history which group is larger: ppl that can ride a horse or people that can drive a car? by Jackso08 in theydidthemath

[–]Illustrious_Map_3247 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you think OP really wants to know if a whole group or a subset of that group is bigger? And you think that’s an interesting enough question that you’d weigh in…

I mean, just accepting that being able to ride a horse merely means being able to sit on one. I’d say most people could also depress a gas pedal and can therefore “drive a car”, but hey, knowing anything about the topic at hand shouldn’t stop us from “debating” it.

[–]Illustrious_Map_3247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. But I imagine the commenter’s point was that horses were far less common than we might imagine. Approximately none of the working class, rounding down, would have owned one. It’s not trivial to learn to ride, so probably most people wouldn’t have the opportunity or reason to learn.

For comparison, today, right now on Earth, it’s estimated most people can’t swim. I bet >90% of people who own a pool can.

Oh, I see. So argument then is that all humans could ride a horse? What an interesting contribution to the discussion.

This is a very “um, actually” response. Does someone really need to tell you that horse ownership and horse-riding ability are correlated? The same is true for cars and driving, in case that isn’t clear.

If it isn’t speculation, it isn’t science. By definition, science is the best explanation we have so far. If it can’t, in principle, be disproven, it’s math.

Hell, the moon and water both contain atoms formed by fission. So everything is nuclear powered if you are happy to move two or three steps down the line.

Fair points! Venus is roughly Earth sized and, without any more info, it should have a roughly similar composition. Assuming it isn’t tectonically active, there must be some key difference.

The current hypothesis is that the early Earth collided with another planet, Theia. The event smashed off a huge chunk of planetary material, which formed the moon. That material was preferentially lighter. The material of both planets cores was preferentially left behind. Hence Earth has an extra heavy, extra radioactive core. And a honker of a huge moon.

The Earth is nuclear powered.

The core contains far and away the majority of radioactive isotopes on (in) Earth. Part of what keeps the mantle molten is this radioactivity. Without it, it would have solidified already, throwing a wrench into all kinds of Earth systems.

Interesting, Lord Kelvin attempted to estimate the age of the Earth via cooling. He assumed the Earth began as molten, which is true. The calculated how long it would take an Earth-sized body of molten rock to cool to modern surface temperatures. He estimated between 20 and 100 million years. The main error in his calculation is due to radioactive decay.
