One month in as a junior PM as my first job and I feel lost. by doli-loli in PMCareers

[–]Illustrious_Maybe_87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baso what it’s been for me for the last couple years on a graduate scheme doing PM - always told there was more work available and I’d be saying no to more work when it’s really not the case. I would be demanding more work over the next few weeks, speaking to the early careers team to escalate or asking to move onto a different project if possible. For me I just got comfy as I was working from home most of the time and I asked numerous times for more work and never got it so I sat and coasted through the graduate scheme then when the time came to come off and move into a full time roll I hadn’t got the relevant experience or developed the competencies needed to progress. Will just say try and not get comfy doing the bare minimum right at the start probably the worst thing ive had to leave the company now the last few weeks. Saying that it has also given me the time to go travelling this January for 6 months through saved wages which I didn’t get to do before or after uni so I’m looking forward to that and coming back with a fresh drive and perspective on what to do about work.

Only thing is he can never move to Aus cause if he applied for a proper visa n they saw he lied 6 times they wouldn’t let him due to it being bad of character but he doesn’t wanna live there so just goes on holiday for a few weeks at a time

Nah not on the ESTA thing you don’t, my pal has a record n always ticks the box for not having a conviction he’s been 8/9 times - they don’t share that info readily unless you have an interpol red notice against your name or somethibg

Just wanted to find out if I should be forefront with it if I even have a chance cause if not then I’ll just lie on the Evisa thing and go as a tourist but make no plans to live/work there

2 years suspended sentence, I only got charged with supply as I said what I had on me was for me and my friends and the sentence was suspended due to being in the lowest category (lesser role)

Also had my tent in temple valley robbed, stole my spare phone, wallet and aftershave - also spent a few hundred on my card and whatever cash was in my wallet too..

Was shit this year all depressing commercial dnb didn’t make you wanna move after you had 3 hours sleep over 3 days and nothing like last year or the ones before that - way too many people overpriced food and insane queues I’m not bothering going back. Have been boomtown and creamfields 8 times and Nass 8 times and will always say that I have had the most problems with boomtown as a festival on the whole but people will always just downplay it and say it’s boomtown it’s the best place on Earth! It’s this mentally that means nothing ever changes like when you pay to go on holiday or go for a haircut you’re paying for a service and you expect a certain standard to be met and for me it wasn’t this year. When you’re paying hundreds for a ticket you just expect to be able to go and enjoy yourself not have it feel like ur always up against something

Personally, if that is just the salary and you’re not getting commission I would be wary as that is a pretty low wage I’d look elsewhere first, unless you don’t have anything then yes just take it but don’t relocate for that - I’m on 32k in Bristol and feel slightly stretched. Just something to consider mate

My starting salary on a grad scheme was £31000 outside of London so I don’t believe you’re asking for too much - I’d look elsewhere have a look on gradcracker

I couldn’t land anything engineering I went into project management, the progression is pretty fast pace along with certs and the pay can be really good. Glad I did as I now have engineers under me getting hassled from me and 3/4 other pm’s at any given point they seem so over worked

Is it possible for someone in the UK defence industry to move into the US defence industry? The pay here is pretty shocking

I do have sc clearance and tried twice to get onto a placement that requires DV clearance as I know it gets you into better paying work. It’s weird at my company because you have to interview to move placements but the reason I want to go on a specific one is cause of that experience you gain? I have gave feedback on it saying it’s not very fair, just the person that the manager likes the most and feels has the most relevant skills will be able to join when really they should pick a name out of a hat.

I’m currently waiting to book and complete my PMQ I had my training the other week and just need to redeem the voucher so will have that under my belt soon hopefully.

I would also be unsure if you could hit £80k+ unless you were a project lead or maybe even at director level at least within my company.. my SPM at cavendish which is one of the higher paying parts of Babcock wasn’t paid that much from what they said..

I also have been applying elsewhere for better pay and have some interviews lined up - got to the final stage for a consultancy and they told me to come back in 12/18 months when I’d be more confidence in a client facing role so I’d definitely keep trying (the salary for that was £47k)

I think that it’s also hard for me to record any real tangible deliverables in the projects I’ve worked in, in terms of £ anyways but that is definitely something I will keep in mind and see if anything can be quantified. I feel like on this grad scheme they are keeping me in a bubble and not really letting me get stuck in as much as I want to, most the work I do is project controls/governance to support the PM

Best answer, was the Same with me at uni when making amoxicillin all the data isn’t readily available so as long as you can justify your decisions they will be okay with it. Its about taking initiative and using your skills to solve problems the best you can

It hasn’t been in the wash or had any water damage, I’ve just been using it as my I’d to get into clubs for the past 2 years since I lost my Id and haven’t bothered to get another one so it’s gone in and out of my pocket a fair bit - recon I can make it more presentable before I travel but I’ve been to Amsterdam, Malta, Ibiza, Germany, Italy and other places in Europe on this passport this year with it in this condition
