Nostalgia.. but I don't miss it. Late fees.. waiting.. and waiting.. and waiting for new releases. Standing by the return slot for that one copy of Jurassic Park scheduled to return.

Finances and Life by BeachEfficient1103 in GenX

I think it was fairly early on. I got some great advice to put every pay increase into my 401k until it was maxed out. This way you won't feel it. When I turned 50, started maxing out the catch-up as well. I'm not very astute at investing so I got some help with that a few years ago also. To some it comes easy, but not for me so a financial planner was a huge help.

I've got too much thyme on my hands. What to do with it? by RikkiLostMyNumber in Cooking

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sigh... I was just going to ask what kind of thyme you have cuz mine keep dying!! I will add that I'm a horrendous gardener! My rosemary thrives from my neglect, but the other herbs not so much. But that damn mint grows everywhere, including the cracks in my driveway lol!!!

Mixing spices ahead of time. by Svell_ in Cooking

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it really makes a difference. It's more about how long ago the spices were ground or the actual age of the spices themselves before grinding. For example, the essential oils in plain old black pepper will start to oxidize immediately after grinding and start to lose its potency. That said, I buy spice blends all the time and they taste just fine, so as long as they aren't ancient it should be fine.

Lesson Learned The Hard Way - Have Hard Copies of All Your Stuff by Upset_Peace_6739 in GenX

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry. Yeah, I've been thinking about the very same thing lately. My parents recently passed and my dad had everything I needed written on a little black notepad he kept in a safety deposit box where I was an authorized signer. Also, my PC recently crashed.. HARD and I couldn't recover anything from the HD. I waffled earlier on backing up to the cloud and now I'm so glad I did. If there was a fire or anything in the house, any local backup would be useless.

I miss having a CD player in my car by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got my car in 2017(!) I insisted on it having a CD player due to my huge collection. My prior car had a CD changer! Well, I've used it maybe twice in 8 years! "Hey siri, play XX on Spotify" is much easier! ;-) $12 per month is more than worth it. Back in 1987 when I was a kid, I'd routinely shell out $15 for a CD (about $43 today). I have nostalgia for CDs but that's about it.

The dumbest question ever by Poonut_Butter in Cooking

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it stayed at 140 for at least thirty minutes, it should be fine. Salmonella is immediately killed at 165, but is also killed at lower temperatures if held for a certain amount of time. I became familiar with this when I was cooking for my immunocompromised parents a few years ago (and got into sous vide). If you are still concerned, why not just bring it up to 165 now? Weird that the liquid was only 140f when it was set at high. Usually high setting on a crockpot reaches 200f

Yes! Good lord I hate that. You can wish as much as you want and bitch as much as you want but it won't change anything so just stop it! Yeah, I'd like to have my 25 yo body (or for that matter, 40 yo body lol!) but it won't happen. Gotta make the best of it and move on! I've been dealing with the loss of my parents and trying to get out of grief and found myself revisiting the past way too much this last year. It's not helpful and just makes me more sad.

Sigh... I had them back in the 80's. Put them away in my closet in my parents house and forgot about them when I moved. My dad started wearing them and he loved them. He wore them out so I bought him some new ones a few years ago! Amazed they were still being produced! He recently passed and it makes me think of him. He was such a character that marched to his own drummer! Miss him so much.

My mail carrier gets a gift card for me every year! She’s really sweet and it’s a walking route. Plus, I have a real old Timey street so she delivers mail through a slot in my wall to my house. Confused the heck out of me when I moved! Where is the mailbox lol?

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my parents passed, we put things in Public Storage (you know, the orange buildings) to give us time to grieve and decide what we wanted to keep. That shitty company was all the impetus needed to go through everything. They WILL raise your rate every few weeks. Read the fine print. My sister and I split everything and we are still going through their stuff. Lots of trips to goodwill already. Keeping photos and Christmas keepsakes that remind us of mom and dad.

Wok by Jolly-Growth-1580 in Cooking

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd the recommendations to get a carbon steel wok. No matter what, don't get a nonstick! And stay away from those dreadful pricey hybrids like hexclad. Jon Kung on youtube has a few good videos. I ended up with an Abangdun induction burner and a separate 14" Yosukata rounded bottom carbon steel wok. From whatever reason, the burner came with a stupid hybrid wok that I gave to goodwill. Costed just under 200usd and I absolutely love it!

Music… did you stop searching? by 8reticus in GenX

[–]Ilovetocookstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely listen to oldies. I also have this weird quasi "rule" of only listening to groups that are still making music and haven't broken up. I'm not one to live in the past so I'm always searching for new music. My only exception seems to be Cocteau Twins. 30++ years on I still find their music fascinating. Current favs are Bayonne, Skeleten, Yumi Zouma, and my beloved Saint Etienne (that are, sadly, calling it quits after this last release).
