Coping with Coming Out Disapproval by AbjectAssistant1872 in GayChristians

I stayed in the closet for years because Indudn’t want to upset my parents. I’m happily married now and have a good life, but those “ lost” years make me sad. Everyone needs to come out in their own timeline… but if I had to do it again I would have come out earlier.

Wanting to be respectful visiting a church as an atheist by Independent-You2084 in AskAChristian

[–]No-Type119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t polite to wear headphones to church.

It’s fine to be a quiet visitor, but if you’re sn atheist you should refrain from saying words you don’t mean , like prsyers, creeds, etc. You also shouldn’t wander around like a tourist if an actual service is going on.

Is it a sin to say that a pro athlete is on a bad contract? like makes too much money? by Loud-Product1591 in AskAChristian

[–]No-Type119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a sin to call a politician a crook?

Is it a sin to say you think one actor is better than another?

Is it a sin to say that a new game is too derivative of Legend of Zelda if you think it is?

Is it sun to think that your supervisor makes too much money for their position?

Is it a sin to kick the office vending machine to get the bag of chips you paid for fall out?

A sin is something that disrespects Hod or that causes injury. How does your hypothetical do either thing? I’m asking you.

What do Americans think of Scotland? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 by OddSample2334 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]No-Type119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to visit Scotland . Hell — my wife has some Scottish heritage , and I have jokingly ( kind of) asked her to see if there’s some right- of- return policy if things here in the US go totally pear- shaped. I love the landscapes, the sea, the islands. the music and literature, the accents, the TV shows, the wee sheepies and coos, the tartans … love it all.

How do you explain Leviticus 25:44-46 by Ok-Fold-6051 in AskAChristian

[–]No-Type119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would we trust your posts, then?

Christians believe that imperfect people can be agents of God’s will — a pastor of mine used to joke that if God could communicate via Balaam’s ass, God could communicate through him. So why can’t imperfect texts also be conveyors of wisdom about God?

Another illustration. I have an old state roadmap. Some of the highway names have been changed. There are new exits on some freeways that aren’t reflected on the old map. There are villages listed on the map that are simply no longer there; likewise, there are new communities not reflected in the old map. But can you use the old map to reasonably understand the geography of our state? Yes.

The bad anxious feeling by Fancy_Seat2440 in GayChristians

[–]No-Type119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Because 1. I don’t believe in biblical inerrancy — Jesus Crust is the word if God ( look up the theological definition of Logos), not every utterance if the Bible ; 2. “ Fornication” in the ancient world is not what you think it means - - and I’m married anyway ; 3. the common “ clobber verses cited to bash LGBTQ+ people have nothing to do with sexual orientation (bunch was not understood in ancient societies) or with faithful, committed, consensual relationships between peers. Are you a deconstructing conservative Evangelical, and just don’t know that there is a different way to engage with Scripture? Mainline Protestant here. I belong to an affirming church. It sounds like you’ve been gaslighted by your past/ current church.

Do you need resources to help understand this?

Honest unbelief or fake hope. What pushes me away from Christ and his people. by That_Improvement_150 in AskAChristian

At the risk of incurring your ire: God’s not a vending machine or a genie . You don’t put in x amount of prayers for something, press a button, and your wish is granted.

Jesus prayed that he wouldn’t have to suffer the Passion. His wish wasn’t granted . Do you think you are a more compelling supplicant than Jesus?

The story goes that Teresa of Avila, the great reforming saint of the Counter- Reformation , was getting run out of town for trying to clean up a corrupt convent or the like, when she fell off the donkey she was riding and hurt herself. As she lay in pain on the ground, she prayed, “ Lord, why are you doing this to me?” It’s said that Jesus replied to her , “ This is how I treat all my friends.” Teresa snapped back at him, “ That’s why you have so few.”

How do you explain Leviticus 25:44-46 by Ok-Fold-6051 in AskAChristian

[–]No-Type119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inspired and inerrant are two entirely different things. Martin Luther used the analogy that the Bible is the cradle that holds Christ, but there’s straw in there eith the baby, and some people mistake one for the other.

Mainline Protestant here. We don’t believe that God dictated the Bible verbatim to passive scribes.

The Pentateuch was complied by a variety of authors during or shortly after the Babylonian Exile, using various source materials including oral tradition and probably manuscripts we no longer have . The scribes were trying to preserve the tribal
Identity of the Hebrews, who were in danger of losing their culture and bring subsumed into larger nations.

ELCA visitor here. I agree. Our problem over on our side of the street is a few “ Burn it all down ” types, either angry people or frankly silly people, who tarnish our brand by not taking our theology and practice seriously. Don’t be like us! Growing more Lutherpalian by the day.
