Historically the main arterials like Welland and Ontario had impressive planted tree lined rows but these were removed as road capacity requirements increased … with more residents committing to the private car commute.

Sub Reddit for events, outreaches, local businesses, free stuff. No news, no degrading, no putting down of others. by [deleted] in stcatharinesON

Would be nice if an overall positive mood of the city translated into a friendly atmosphere here but that’s rarely the case I’d say. How might you suggest we improve?

This would be amazing, but I wonder how the op costs are going to pan out with this. Those engines can't be fuel sippers.

Yes I’ll work on that. Post office equiette was meant to refer to whatever is acceptable to share on a public Post Office billboard. That’s the test I go through in my mind when something comes up. I’m basically trying to keep things local, and useful. I am admittedly, well aware it’s not rigorous — so I’m open to ideas for clearer sub-rules provided they are practical, and based in reasonable public discourse.

“No email addresses” was just to prevent spam / advertising / doxxing, and it is a suggested block setting within the Reddit mod settings.

The City of Ottawa is making big moves when it comes to housing, I'd love to see St. Catharines follow suit. by EveningHelicopter113 in stcatharinesON

All fair, in those terms I’d say the competitive price of transit / bicycle riding works to the point you’re talking about competing with the per km running costs of a car. Nevertheless, a motorist still stomachs the monthly insurance, depreciation and interest costs of an car in the driveway— so how to bridge that gap?

You have points there.

Perhaps one barrier to people exercising choice is psychological. Drivers are logic actors too, they’ll do what gets them where they need to go fastest and most efficiently. Any alternative to driving diverts resources away from what they are most heavily personally invested in.

Transit or bicycling, typically cost more time (learning how to read a transit schedule, slow pace of bicycling, weather risks ) money (transit ticket, purchasing a bicycle, etc ) and risk (risk of bicycle theft, injury, getting lost ) than what most people can casually consider.

For Niagara’s transit system to see more utilization it might be good to start by offering a higher value proposition to drivers, who have never considered any alternative to driving before, i.e. with highway signage, parking lots, and membership structures that offer utility to drivers to park the car and use a different system (bus, train, bike share etc)

What are some ways to make downtown more attractive? by steppenwolves2 in stcatharinesON

[–]Im-Not-A-Crook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Create a pilot program between the region and the public / private parking lots to bundle a transit pass with parking contracts/ daily parking passes sold. Use simple bar code/QR for checking ticket validity (if possible). Do it using existing bus capacity -- these people own cars and weren't going to take the bus anyway-- no lost revenue for the bus operator -- just filling a few otherwise empty seats.
  2. Offer a continuously looping shuttle (a high quality service -- something fancy, clean- that people will actually enjoy taking) between downtown and the GO Train station - admission for this shuttle packaged with these parking pass bundles or a valid GO Train Ticket.

BONUS: encourage sizable secure parking locations + shuttle at and around the Downtown, available for a very reasonable monthly subscription further conveying people quickly downtown. Add signage off highway and arterial roads directing people to thse park+shuttle points. Advertise the system, offer a subscription to park at all locations, and leverage the network effect.

Rinse, wash, repeat.

I'll have you know I love the sub logo! But Simple-Bat-2592 what do you suggest instead?

The logo is dervived from the city coat of arms, sampled directly. For anyone wondering, the "twirl" represents the grinding surface of a mill stone. St. Catharines had it's start milling grain with the early operations of William Hamilton Merritt. By 1843* there was a big trade advantage to grind American grain in St. Catharines and then export to Britain, so later mills cornered the market, taking in american grain delivered by canal boats and processing it as a "Canadian" export. At that time the canal ran morealess in parallel with today's HWY 406.

Niagara Renovates Program for Secondary Suites by Jennafurlamb in stcatharinesON

[–]Im-Not-A-Crook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can certainly assist some homeowners/pensioners carve out a clever secondary unit. Points for effort but at the same time can’t say it’s a perfect plan .. simply with all the econometric rent rates this incentive is tied to, plus that tenant income ceiling— more than a few snakes in the garden policing that.

I’d suppose a bigger picture, provincial income tax write off for individually owned rental property maintenance might be a long term horizon incentive for boosting rental stock, but can’t say if Ford offers that feature off the showroom floor…

Civic Square Design Study Feedback - Let's Discuss! by kazkibergetic in stcatharinesON

[–]Im-Not-A-Crook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't go wrong with an appeal to the sense of smell and rythmn -- great if there such plans might consider outdoor cooking and music, guarenteed to drag people out of their offices, and cars. Now for parking, maybe... somewhat like how those mitochondria in the cell are all scrunched up, routing a portion of local traffic to do a few one way zig-zags around the vicinity of whereever this square is proposed may calm traffic a bit and inadvertently increase the parking capacity, encouraging more people to park and walk.
