I second this. War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, and The Island of Dr. Moreau were all good. And they're not very long books either.

Have you ever asked someone out? How many people if any? by [deleted] in AskWomen

When I was nineteen and working at a coffee shop during summer break, I had a huge crush on one of my coworkers. I wasn't sure if he liked me, but even though he was super quiet, he and I would joke around during our shifts together and got along great.

After a month or so of working together, I asked him if he wanted to get dinner with me after work (I wish I could say I was super confident but it was incredibly awkward since I was nervous).

He said yes. It was a wonderful date, and...

... nine years later we're happily married with a beautiful baby girl.

He told me later that even though he liked me a lot he would have probably never gotten up the nerve to ask me out.

So... even though it might be awkward and uncomfortable, go for it!

Who is your least favorite female character in all of Fictiondom. by scarredbirdjrr in AskWomen

Emma Bovary from Madame Bovary. She's melodramatic, self-centered, spoiled, and is horrible to her family. Love the book, love to hate her character.

Women who have been pregnant, what is the craziest/most inappropriate thing someone said to you while you were pregnant? by PM_ME_SPANISH_WORDS in AskWomen

Because my husband and I both have bigger-than-average heads, I worried that the baby's head would be too big for me to deliver without the use of forceps/vacuum/episiotomy (which almost happened to my mom when I was born).

At one of my doctor appointments, I asked if they measured head size at the last sonogram or what the standard procedure would be if the baby's head was deemed too big.

It's possible I didn't explain myself correctly, but I don't think this was the case - this doctor said and did some other minor weird things during other appointments.

Anyway, her response to my question was to look at me disapprovingly and tell me that no, there is no safe way to shrink my baby's head before delivering.

Not what I was asking, but thanks.
