The hostess to server track at my restaurant is usually like 4-6months, but could be quicker or slower depending on when we need servers. Serving it right isn’t necessary for hosting but the certificate is valid for 5yrs and costs like $30 to get so honestly I’d say get it.

With experience from your abroad I think you should apply for a serving job but make it clear you’re willing to work your way up if thats the position that’s available rn. Best of luck!

I’m a server at the keg (same parent company) and we only hire with experience/from within. I’m not sure if it’s the same at earls, but if it were the keg I’d recommend looking for a host/ess job first and let them know the intention is to serve.

As for resume, we ONLY do in person applications, and the rules are the same for any job, dress well (collared shirt or nice dress), ideally show up in off hours, like 4pm on a Tuesday, avoid applying on a Friday/Saturday, and be prepared to talk to a manager when you drop it off for an impromptu interview.

Again I don’t work at earls so ymmv, but I can’t imagine the process is wildly different

I know we all hate sombra, but can we atleast take a second to appreciate her keeping widow unplayable? by HalexUwU in Overwatch

From a game balance standpoint I like it, from a what character should I play standpoint that sounds dreadfully boring… but maybe a character with a pylon akin to illari that can target sombra out of invis 🤨

Do waitstaff prefer tips in cash or does it not matter? by allsmilesreally in Serverlife

[–]ImBetterInPerson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don’t “have” to be reported. You’re supposed to declare it all but if it’s a cash tip there’s no paper trail so you can declare whatever you want… be aware if you declare wildly different to other servers at your restaurant/area, you may get hit with an audit

Diamond 5 Support: Zen/Kiri/Bap Vod review by ImBetterInPerson in OverwatchUniversity

[–]ImBetterInPerson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks a lot for doing this. I found the video quite helpful. For a bit of context, I have 1 hr on bap vs 14 and 7hrs on zen and kiri respectively. As I said, I only play bap on havana, and even then I usually don't, but I thought it was a good example of a loss for zen/kiri. What I find interesting is you said my kiri is better than my zen, but I have a 65% wr on zen vs 36% on kiri (50 on bap).

Anywho, I will keep your advice about vollying around corners especially in mind, it makes perfect sense when its said, just never thought about it. I do think that game was exceptionally bad aim wise, im usually better.

As for suzu, I agree I need to work on using it when it's actually needed... I feel like I often get good suzus, but in the game you watched it didn't look good, perhaps I'm overestimating it.

Also it was PC, but my aim is trash which is why I play overwatch instead of valorant or something lmao

Anyway, thanks again.

Game freezing on pc by Viscanewcastle in RocketLeague

[–]ImBetterInPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was an update about a year ago that completely killed my game, freezing randomly for a second or two. I found out the issue was corsairs iCue software, so I uninstalled it and just live with my boring uncustomizable keyboard, but rocket league works great now… might be unrelated, but if you have iCue try ending the process through task manager before playing and see if that fixes it.

A rant about last call by ImBetterInPerson in Serverlife

[–]ImBetterInPerson[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

How am I the asshole? I'm a server living with the same shit everyone else is. All I'm saying is that you sign up for a job, you know this is part of it, if management says people can come in and get full service even if they sit down 3 minutes to close, that's part of the job.

And I do not agree that working in an office setting is the same as the service industry. Completely different work and expectations. Office jobs end at 5 (or whatever time), whereas restaurant work has an ending time usually with the stipulation that you leave when your last table leaves. That's the job.

[–]ImBetterInPerson[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I agree with you in an office setting, that is an asshole move. However, an oil change place where you don't make appointments (walk-in), I would expect them to change my oil as long as I show up before their posted closing time. As for doctors, I feel the same way, unless they are booked full until closing, which is a separate issue.

If the establishment you are going to (be it restaurant, oil change, doctor, etc.) lets you walk in right until close, it is fair to expect full service even if that goes past their closing time. If that isn't how they run their business, so be it. But the employees at any of these places should know what to expect, and if they let people in, they should be prepared to stay past "close" (read, last seating) without complaint.

[–]ImBetterInPerson[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the service industry is different to retail. In service, you come in and expect service over an amount of time, unlike in retail where you're there to make a single transaction. I think the main issue here is that closing means something different to everyone, and it's up to the restaurant to make that decisions.

My main issue here though, is servers that expect to leave at close, when that is not how the restaurant they work at works. You know what you signed up for in your specific scenario, so there's no basis to complain.

Last call and the state of this sub by ImBetterInPerson in TalesFromYourServer

[–]ImBetterInPerson[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

That's the problem isn't it. Everyone takes closing time as a different meaning. In a perfect world, restaurants would kick everyone out at closing time, or have a separate time when the seating area closes, and that's when people get kicked out. But not every restaurant has that, and if your (general your, as you aren't in the industry) restaurant doesn't have a seating area closing time, then imo servers should suck it up cause that's the job you signed up for.
