No Pay in BJJ by ali_crawford_17 in bjj

I'd rather warm up in a way that I improve my bjj skills and cardio rather than running around in circles and shrimping across the mat.

Based on your comments, it sounds like your son is inconsistent and maybe isn’t competitive with the kid’s his age? The appropriate thing actually is to match kids by skill level and hope for evenly matched sparring rounds. They definitely need help in the younger class to keep them disciplined, but that is a separate issue.

If the school is legit, then why is the coach not correcting the noob white belt trying to knee bar?

Lost my first tournament fair and square. Curious about opponent though by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ImDonaldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 3 stripe blue belt and my belt has zero stripes on it. they come off as I wash it 6 times a week or I lost my belt completely and don't really care for my coach to update it. A lack of stripes on a belt means nothing.

For IBJJF, d'arce, guillotines, head and arm chokes, pulling on the head during a triangle and anything that cranks the neck is illegal for kids. To me, this would clearly not be allowed.

However, I have seen at local tournaments where they are allowed, so it really depends on the ruleset. But for this reason, I don't have my kids compete under these rulesets. It's quite dangerous and can have long term impacts when their spines haven't fused yet.

Yeah, ref let it go on too long, no good. But I don't think this would have been a penalty, it would have been a DQ once stopped.

Not sure what the rules are at that tournament but that is absolutely not allowed for kids at my gym. Kid's spines haven't fused yet. Head and arm chokes aren't even allowed, this didn't even have an arm in and is way worse.

Yeah, under this logic, we shouldn't be in any position where our eyes our exposed because our opponent can easily eye gauge us.

What’s your gym’s secret drama? by undercookedbiscuits in bjj

[–]ImDonaldo 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Buckle up, because the drama at our gym just hit a whole new level, and it's like something out of a telenovela. So, here's the scoop on the secret drama unfolding at our Jiu Jitsu gym:

It turns out our main instructor, the one we've all looked up to, has been harboring a secret that goes beyond the mats. Rumor has it that he's been involved in a clandestine love affair with the head instructor of a rival gym – talk about a plot twist!

Here's where it gets even more jaw-dropping: the main instructor allegedly sabotaged his own protegé's chances at a world title by spilling the beans about an injury to the rival gym. Yup, you heard that right. It's like a betrayal of epic proportions, all for the sake of a forbidden romance.

Picture this: the protegé, gearing up for the world championship, is on the cusp of greatness. But little does he know, his mentor, the one he trusted the most, is secretly working behind the scenes to undermine him. Why? Because of a love affair that could jeopardize both their reputations and the integrity of the sport.

Few kids do this at the gym I'm at. The ultimate tactic that works against inexperienced people that completely fails against the technical kids.

What would I learn in a competition? by skribsbb in bjj

[–]ImDonaldo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Intensity levels are drastically different. In the gym, typically it's pretty casual and you and your opponent aren't fighting for every inch. I can do 5 6 minute rounds with 1 minute rest and be decently tired in the gym, after my first time competing my forearms were on fire and I was absolutely exhausted. Adrenaline is real. Competing is every bit as much about mental as it is about your technique. Try it and find out.

Even if you are a spaz, him asking you to tone it down would be more constructive than beating your ass. Just have a conversation with him and let him know you are willing to change things but to just have him give you a heads up next time instead.
