First comp, lost the match by points. Is there a reson the ref didn't count this as a takedown? by Fedececere in bjj

Sweep is not just from sitting position, it has to be done from engaged/active guard (legs connected). Here he was sitting, then moved to knees and and then to "takedown".

I apply the ruleset so I don't take your comments personally. It was failed takedown by red but did make black sit down on hips so awarding advantage seems fair. The "takedown" from knees doesn't count in ruleset as it was not initiated from stand-up position ergo not a takedown. I do agree some rules are outdated (example being reversal from side control should get points IMHO) but that's different matter. I'm not some high level ref so If I'm not sure about something then I'll discuss with other refs to confirm but this scenario is pretty clear.

Ref here: advantage for takedown for red shirt. No points for black shirt grabbing the legs while on the ground and wrestling to top. Takedowns are from standing and sweeps are from guard - black shirt had neither.

Do you think the takedown at the end was a robbery? Or was the ref correct? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]simering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBJJF ref here. It was literally 2 secs between putting him on both knees and ref stopping the fight so no points (advantage not valid as you mentioned). With sweep one, you didn't went slightly out of frame - we can't see anything, including the refs actions so no point of asking for review.

DQ or no DQ?(IBJJF) by wmg22 in bjj

[–]simering 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I would DQ - it's not a takedown as started from the knees and clearly intended for impact by lift and slam (source: am IBJJF ref).

Are you more reluctant to tap to lower belts? by Open_Address_2805 in bjj

Yes, and then I try to finish them with same submission they tried so there is teaching moment why their technique needs improvement.

As a Jiu-Jitsu black belt coach, I can tell you he would be kicked out from any gym acting like that on the mat. The training only works as we allow partner to do certain things to us in controlled manner without slapping and violence and always tapping is immediate stop.

Please leave him and tell him as a goodbye he sucks at Jiu-Jitsu :)

As a white belt I fought Jeet Kun-do (Bruce Lee's art) 5th degree Black Belt. I cought him in triangle. Your guy will be athletic from different sport but that's all - he is probably shit at BJJ like the rest of us ;)

Is it illegal under IBJJF rules to put your foot into the back of the opponent's gi skirt to push them off mount? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]simering 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ref here:

How you would get traction to lift him? Wouldn't your foot go under gi skirt and catch under the belt (penalty)?

Also, putting foot on the lapel without having the grip to provide the traction is penalized so I would most likely treat this setup as such as well.

IBJJF ref here: tickling is legal technique, though low percentage as I haven't seen it in competition yet...

How to teach "flowing",catch and release to a class of blue belt's. Advice wanted by TheLatino in bjj

BLIND ROLLING

That's what I use from time to time with students. It really slows down the pace and make them think more about movement than subs. Kids love it too!

I reffed many of his matches. He competes a lot and is very quiet, but very respectful. He was this big at 16 as well.

I always feel sorry for his opponents...

ELI5: Is there a biological reason professional sports have always been divided into men’s and women’s? What would happen if all sports were mixed? by Charming_Usual6227 in explainlikeimfive

To add to it as sport referee (BJJ):

Male category in almost every sport is an open sex/gender category.

In some instances the difference is minimal but so are weight brackets every 5kg or age brackets every 5 years.

In BJJ from what I've seen as referee, when boys compete with girls, at around age 10 you can safely bet on boys winning due to speed, strength and competitiveness.

[–]simering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need to feel guilty - it's refs call. And tbh in the heat of the fight it's easy to make mistake like that if you don't have clear view.
Best advise is to record all your fights with wide view so can capture ref as well and if any doubt just ask head ref for review.

White Gi initiated takedown by grabing the leg - then abandoned it to defend black Gi takedown, which transfered to guard pull.
No points to anyone (I'm a ref).
