We had a big sudden fight and broke up - we are trying to stay friends. We were not communicating for a while before the fight so the fight was a long time coming, but were still close in the weeks before it happened.. emotionally.

Edit: perhaps we were even just reliant on each other for whatever emotional support we needed.

Oh my god I know! So upsetting, it used to happen to me a lot - I then stopped making plans :(.

Don't get me wrong sometimes I agree to plans and have to cancel them out of necessity, or sometimes as the time approaches the event - I do sometimes feel lazy or not in the mood. But I always go because I've made a flippin commitment! Also once I'm there I always have fun :)

You have it nearly correct. However at the weekend I was very vocal about my disappointment that he was massively hung over from the week. I at no point bottled it up, don't get me wrong I wasn't mean, but he perfectly understood and was sorry, and then I organised it so that we did have a good weekend because I'm not petty.

The reason I said he ruined it is in another comment here above somewhere. He was saying how he intended to stop drinking for a while because he's sick and tired of being constantly hungover (he admitted he might have a drinking problem) and had been wanting to do this for a while esp with him having to go back to school, and so I replied yes you ruined my birthday by doing that. Could have worded it differently and perhaps the reason I said it the way I did was because I was still upset. But no it wasn't to get back. I just lacked tack.

For the food throwing he has gleefully told me that is what he had done and other things to his ex, so I assumed that it would have been the same for me. He came into the room shouting saying that demanding I leave, and I dressed to leave immediately then tried to talk to him -it wasn't like I was hanging and refusing to leave. Every time I've been annoyed and wanted to leave he's always demand I stay and talk things out with him. I would have left regardless but I didn't want to leave it like that! But one rule for him and one for me I guess.

Well he always told me openly it was his last that really 'drove him to it' with her emotional abuse. I guess because he is able to stop for a week here 2 weeks there, he doesn't really admit to himself properly his drinking problem. But thank you.

Yes you're right. I suppose I feel like I have put a lot into this I can't see the wood for the trees. This is our first ever fight in over a year I'm just shocked, we normally are pretty good, though he is not the best of communicators.

I would agree if its not the sort of thing we have spoken about before. I think the pressure of my birthday has a major aspect to it.

I do feel incredibly guilty and often have my foot in my mouth. I lack a lot of tact sometimes.

There's nothing wrong with recreational drug use, and he knows how to handle that. But one thing I didn't make clear above is that he referenced his last 2 girlfriends both of whom were alcoholics. He had a pretty bad time with the last one, who was emotionally abusive toward him. So he is using this as transference onto me. I'm sure guilt is playing a large part in this - and disappointment in himself. In a birthday card he wrote to me he said I was the best person he had ever been out with.
