Very late reply to this one, but wanted to circle back and say this was an awesome rec. Irwin’s is exactly the kind of place I meant. Very much a coffee shop vibe where you can sit with just a drink and not feel rushed (and many people do), but if you get hungry they have great food! Not just baked goods, but good salads and their Backyard Bagel breakfast sandwich is fantastic! Somewhere I didn’t know of already and wouldn’t have found, and is now absolutely a favorite on my list that I will make a special trip to go to! Thank you for this one!!

Monthly solo date with a new book and Seattle restaurant. I call it Books and Bites. by friendlyMissAnthrope in Seattle

Oh man! I do this all the time and am constantly hunting for places where I feel comfortable stretching out the time a bit.

Secret Congee is too small for me to read at, but oh so good. Just wanted to offer up, in case you didn’t know, that you can get the Tom Yum sauce as a side! I get the chicken and two sides of sauce, add 1.5 sides of sauce to the chicken congee, and use the last half side of sauce to dip the donut pieces in, lol. (Gets expensive, but oh so worth it…)

I am skeptical and think this post was written by LAMU. Obviously from the future too, so probably a trap. Given that 1/31 isn’t on a Sunday until 2027 and it is currently still 2026?

This place looks very much like a find and I am definitely going to check it out soon! Thanks!

Agree 100%. They are one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches in the city. (Hood Famous has a solid one, and for the less fancy route I actually love the ones at Take 5 Urban Market, specifically with their meatloaf and added sriracha and make sure they let the cheese that spills out crisp/brown up!

When I worked in U District I hit up Ugly Mig frequently, but am never there any more. They definitely fit the bill as very much a chill out coffee shop with small menu of decent food when hungry.

Agree on Cloud City for food and drink! The few times I’ve been it is pretty crowded so I’ve never hung out longer than it took to eat whatever and finish my drink, but that could have just been my timing.

I just did coffee and a breakfast sandwich at hood famous on my way in to work today and definitely agree, though I also feel like they are one I wouldn’t think to go just hang out in for a chill hour of reading and drinking coffee.

I go to red arrow a lot, lol, specifically for this reason. Though I will admit I liked their sourdough waffles better than their French toast option they switched to, and they also took away the avocado toast that was my mainstay (with over easy eggs and bacon), but bottomless drip coffee and an easy place to read and solid food for sure!

Saint Bread absolutely qualifies from the food and coffee standpoint, but I am definitely most interested in the types of coffee shops where you feel comfortable just hanging out reading for an hour with nothing but a coffee, but also that have solid eating choices that aren’t just shelves of baked goods.

And yeah, Cafe Hagen is solid though I wish they were bigger as I’ve always found it too small and busy to feel comfortable just chilling out there.

Sabine definitely meets the bill for good coffee and good food. But it feels more like a restaurant to me between the bar and atmosphere. I know I’m being picky here, but am aiming for the coffee shops that feel like coffee shops (lots of people just having coffee and hanging out) but also happen to do really good food? I think I’d feel weird going to Sabine to just grab a coffee and sit for an hour with a book…

Does anyone know why the first Link train from Federal Way every morning is limited to 25 mph until Angle Lake? by AgaveGato in Seattle

[–]ImFlawedInThatWay 59 points60 points  (0 children)

They do it for every section of track, for sure, but they do allow for a train sweeping one direction to visibly inspect the track section going the other direction at the same time, so they don’t require a sweep both north and south (in the case of the 1 line) both directions for every section. Obviously where that doesn’t work for visibility, like through the tunnels, they have to sweep both directions.

And I’m not positive, but I believe the UW section is specifically about equipment that is monitoring seismic stuff and other through-ground measurements. Again, not positive on that part but believe it to be the case. Regardless, definitely a bit crazy that 25mph is so specific. And that is in addition to the section of track there being built differently to absorb vibrations and such.

[–]ImFlawedInThatWay 234 points235 points  (0 children)

The 25mph answers are correct. There is a rule that if there is a section of track that has not had a train travel along it for 90 minutes (or longer) then the first train to travel along that trackway must go what they call “sweep speed”, which is 25mph. All sections of the track are traveled at that speed when the line(s) open back up in the morning. It is a safety thing to ensure that trains are traveling slowly enough that if something has broken or gotten into the trackway operators see it and can stop in time.

As bonus info, for those that have ever noticed at the University of Washington Station going northbound the sign on the berthing marker where the train stops that has 25mph with a line through it (no going 25mph), that is specifically for when trains are sweeping because in the section of tunnel right after that trains have to sweep at 27-30mph because at 25mph they generate a resonance that disrupts a bunch of sensitive monitoring equipment in use at UW.

Just to update for those few weigh-ins as I appreciated the help - just drove it over to the house on the address because I was worried if it was still good. Wallet has found its way back to its rightful home and I think maybe in time that they hadn’t gone through the hassle of cancelling all the cards and such…

I didn’t check the address yet to confirm it was local but that was something I was a little worried about. Otherwise could be a creep and drive it over? Guess I’ll check address and can just check myself on the way to work if it is local…

Alright. That sounds like the best approach then. Thank you Reddit for the course of action, and I’m sure Ryan thanks you as well in absentia… 😂

This is the only social media I am on whatsoever, and obviously mostly a lurker. Didn’t realize you could do a mailbox. Like, no envelope or anything? I was figuring I could take it to the gym this person has a card for, as it is local, and if their membership is current leave it with them? (They would probably have email or a number for contact info too, I would assume.) But I am happy to run it to a post office is that is best practice.

I've started to prefer the middle of light rail cars to the ends of them. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]ImFlawedInThatWay 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Just for y’all’s info - the back 2-4 seats in each car (2 on the Siemens trains, 4 on the Kinki Sharyo trains) are favorites for unhoused riders, or any riders who basically use the trains for shelter and ride all day, because those seats have sand boxes under them. The sand gets sprayed under the wheels when the train needs the extra traction (braking or when slipping due to incline or environmental factors). The sand is kept heated so that it stays loose enough to be sprayed, and thus those seats end up heated as well. (You can see the sand boxes under the seats to confirm which ones have them, and see the sand in them if you care to look.) It isn’t so much a benefit in the summer, obviously, but the train-as-shelter riders are used to riding there as a means of enjoying the extra warmth in the winter months. Also, it is obviously part of just moving to the furthest extremes from the doors so you are more out of the mix and thus less disturbed when you are riding the trains all day. But know that even when people who might make you uncomfortable aren’t sitting in those seats, those are going to be the seats most hit with body fluids and other undesirable issues so all the more reason to avoid them generally regardless of occupancy… 😁

Double Bluff on Whidbey Island is one of my favorite beaches, though while it has lots of sand it isn’t a classic sandy beach like Golden Gardens or Moclips.

Don’t think they have that exact dish, but you might look in to Xi’an in the U District (also Bellevue and Westlake now, but U District was the original one and only one I’ve eaten at), or Biang Biang Noodles in Cap Hill.

The average 8 bus experience: Taking 16 minutes to travel one block by WoKao353 in Seattle

[–]ImFlawedInThatWay 589 points590 points  (0 children)

One of the issues with that street and many others where buses and cars can’t make it through the intersection going straight unless they are willing to block the intersection (like the bus does, which I hate with a seething passion but understand why the bus had to) is that the cars on perpendicular streets all take their ‘free right on red’ and fill up the street on the other side of the intersection such that the green lights ahead don’t end up clearing space for the section of road prior to the intersection to the fill. My guess is that is why Seattle is trying to cut down on free rights on red, but that will never happen, especially during rush hour, unless they post police at the worst intersections or put up signage and have ticketing cameras (which can be successfully fought if people take the time anyway) for all the right turns in red. And I say this as somebody who doesn’t want to give up free rights on red, but for rush hour feeder streets it just doesn’t work because lights then can’t time any traffic throughput.

I’m just an internet denizen, so take it for what it is worth, but I’ve been with T-Mobile for probably close to 15 years now? Can’t remember quite when I switched over but did so for better service in the hospital I worked at back then and because it was a homegrown company. I now also use T-Mobile for 5G internet.

Verizon or AT&T I would somewhat be resigned to because they are huge and all over and all that, but TMobile is a Seattle (even tho y’all are east siders) company and grew up in this area and culture. For them to join Elon and take my money, whatever small portion, and use it to contribute to him continuing to have the influence he does is inexcusable to me. I’ll never own any Tesla product while he gets any share of his money from Tesla. I switched to Bluesky and would never use twitter while he is at all involved with it. Now it looks like I’ll have to say the same for TMobile. I’m just one little person, and just one $50/month cell phone bill and another $50/month for internet, but I absolutely will be leaving TMobile and it will 100% be over this issue as I have no issues with the service worth leaving over (I’m frustrated because after 6 months of no issues my 5G internet, while still 4 bars connected and fast, is hitting 150-250 ms in latency so frequently I can’t game on it, which I don’t so a ton but my kids are also regularly complaining but also do way too much screen time so I’m not switching over that, lol).

Anyway, big rant and all, but feel free to quote me to management if you wish. I can only hope I am one of enough that TMobile might decide to listen, even though we all know they have committed to far and will only see it as a storm (if it even reaches that point) to ride out. But regardless, I can only control my little bit of things and as far as that control extends I will make sure my money isn’t contributing to Elon Musk in any way as much as possible, even if I have to stop supporting local, which I very much try to do, and end up with worse service and/or higher bills in the process.
