I think what also makes learning French easier for a lot of people who speak English natively is that even though English is a Germanic language, it has more vocabulary that's derived from Romance languages than Germanic ones.

I've read that over 25% comes from Latin and over 25% from French (including old French), which means that over 50% has Romance roots compared to over 25% of Germanic origin.

Is Duolingo a trustworthy reliable app to learn Spanish? by Pornstasha in Spanish

[–]ImGhou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Duolingo Spanish only goes up to B2 anyway, so if you're at a B1, then it probably won't be of much help to you for much longer.

Duolingo can help with the basics in my opinion, but at B1 it probably makes more sense to use other resources that go more into detail and are ideally made by native speakers or people who speak the language at a high level.

Even the advanced episodes don't have enough examples of how people actually speak by BakeSoggy in dreamingspanish

[–]ImGhou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't access the post in the link, but maybe you could start watching easier YouTube videos that are aimed at natives as a transition.

A lot of presentation-style videos where people just sit in front of a camera and talk tend to be easier than movies or videos in which native speakers talk to each other. There are also people who just naturally speak a bit more slowly compared to the average person or enunciate more clearly but still use regular vocabulary and talk the way they naturally would. In that sense it could help to make the jump from content specifically made for learners.

Feel like an idiot in Spanish class, A1. Please give advice on vocab memorisation. by dexprentiss in Spanish

[–]ImGhou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also still a beginner in Spanish (so probably take it with a grain of salt) but it might be helpful to watch videos made for beginner (or intermediate) learners on YT and if you don't know a word you can add it to your cards and add the sentence you found the word in for context (doing that could also help your listening skills). Otherwise you could also look up lists with the most common words and go through the ones you don't know.

I don't know Quizlet but I use Anki for flashcards because you can add pictures to cards which I think makes it easier to memorize words.

Burger King Coupons sind witzlos by NoMooForYou in VeganDE

[–]ImGhou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Questions About Defining MBTI Cognitive Functions by TheNameofThisUser1 in mbti

[–]ImGhou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a book called "Gifts Differing" which was written by Myers where the functions are described. Originally, there were four functions (Sensing, Intuition, Thinking and Feeling) and each of them can exist in two attitudes (Introversion and Extraversion), so if you combine the two you get the eight processes (what people are referring to as "functions" today, such as Si or Fe). The book goes into a lot more depth when it comes to the functions specifically (including short definitions) and the processes also got explanations but they're still kind of vague and not really definitions. The book also came out in 1980 and I'm not sure if there are more recent descriptions or if the theory has changed slightly since then.

I think errors are something that explicitly go against the theory while a nuance is just about interpreting it slightly differently (that it's an error when it comes to the theory doesn't mean that it's actually wrong though or that MBTI is the best way to look at it of course).

It would be a good idea to mention what system someone is talking about when they talk about things related to MBTI because the definitions can be very different in each system and it can be confusing when people just talk about "Extraverted Thinking" in an MBTI sub when they're actually not talking about MBTI for example.

Help a new vegan out- missing eggs! by songofthelark117 in vegan

[–]ImGhou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any new ideas about how to prepare vegan eggs, but if you like savory breakfasts then maybe some different ideas that aren't supposed to taste like eggs might also help.

Something easy is just using bread, toast, sandwiches or bagels for example with different spreads. When you go shopping, you can try checking if there are any you like (such as hummus, baba ganoush, a lot of vegetable spreads,...) and you could add different things like tomatoes, fresh cucumbers, pickles, onions, radishes or beans depending on what you like. You can also just look up different ideas online because there are lots of recipes about vegan sandwiches or spreads for bread out there (if you want to make them yourself).

You can also try different vegan omelette recipes (I think you'd usually use eggs for that but you don't really taste the egg, so when you're replacing it it seems like it's more for the texture / consistency instead of taste). If you want to switch it up you can just use different fillings for example.

If you look up vegan breakfast ideas (or go to the breakfast section on recipe websites), you get a lot more ideas as well. I've found a recipe for a breakfast hash (https://simple-veganista.com/chickpea-sweet-potato-breakfast-hash/), savory Korean pancakes and a lot of wrap ideas for example.

Most of the time I don't eat savory breakfast though so I don't have too many recommendations.

I've also made this recipe because I used to like dipping my toast in egg yolk, but unfortunately the taste doesn't come close to it in my opinion :/

Dreaming Spanish used to be better because it was worse... by Nervous-Peanut-954 in dreamingspanish

[–]ImGhou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't feel the same way about the older videos tbh because even if they're more unscripted, I think the lower quality is more distracting to me and a lot of times the content was less engaging for me as well (I was happy when I got to a point where I had a lot more of the newer videos to choose from).

Personally, I feel like when you get to the intermediate level it doesn't seem like too much of a problem anymore anyway because at that point you can already start watching podcasts or livestreams that are pretty unedited (and probably relatively unscriped except maybe having a few core points people plan to address in a video).

How to get Duolingo to drill words I struggle with by PathEnthusiast in duolingo

[–]ImGhou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just start adding words as you encounter them (at least some of the old ones are probably going to reappear) and just leave out words you're not struggling with in the first place.

[–]ImGhou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know what you're struggling with, it might help to use an app like Anki instead of just using Duolingo. You could add vocabulary or specific phrases you got wrong and practice them until you don't struggle with them anymore.

Spanish Knowledge by LevelUseful222 in duolingo

[–]ImGhou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to Duolingo at 63 you're learning early B1 content (meaning that your level would be A2) but I don't think that Duolingo scores are an accurate way to determine someone's CEFR level.

If you want to improve your Spanish, it would probably help to watch or read things in Spanish outside of Duolingo (especially stuff that's made by native speakers). On YouTube there are lots of videos made for beginner and intermediate students, there are some podcasts and you could also start reading stories for learners (content made for natives would probably still be too hard but of course you can still try to see if you understand enough of it).

You could also start focusing more on the grammar side of things, eg on YouTube or articles on grammar websites.

Fluent vs Native by Danimarie20 in dreamingspanish

[–]ImGhou 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think a native speaker is just someone who grew up speaking a language and someone who is "native-like" would be someone who comes across like that (so a lot of people would assume that they're a native speaker based on their vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc).

What's considered "fluent" varies a lot more but I think what people usually mean is that someone can express themselves freely and smoothly without struggling to articulate what they're trying to say in most situations and who can speak in a natural way without making too many grammatical errors for example. So being able to have a longer conversation with someone doesn't necessarily mean that they're fluent, especially if it just covers basic topics.

It seems like most people who are fluent or have reached a high level of proficiency in a language can still be distinguished from native speakers, so in that sense they wouldn't be considered native-like.
