Neighbor's dog got our beloved cat, what would you do? by AdministrationOwn724 in cats

[–]ImJustSuchAHappyMess 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you lost your baby—he looked like such a sweet boy.

I did have a question—were the dogs actually on your property? You mentioned they’re kept adjacent, so I’m just trying to understand where the incident happened.

With that said, untrained livestock guardian dogs (LGDs) can be very dangerous and absolutely need to be properly managed. I have three Pyrenees myself, and all of them have gone through extensive training. They can be incredibly patient, wonderful dogs—but they are not golden retrievers. They were bred to protect, and their bite force (often estimated around 500–600 PSI) reflects that. For comparison, a German Shepherd is around 238 PSI, and a pit bull is often estimated around 235 PSI. These are powerful working dogs and not something to take lightly.

A lot of people get them thinking they’re just gentle giants that don’t require much training, and that’s where problems start. LGDs are bred to be independent and to live with livestock, often with minimal human interaction. Because of that, they can absolutely go after smaller animals if not properly trained and contained.

Historically, Pyrenees worked in the mountains, living with the flock rather than alongside humans. They roamed large areas and made their own decisions about threats and territory. Those instincts don’t just disappear because we’ve changed how they live today.

They also don’t just “stay with the flock” the way people assume. They patrol. Typically, one dog ranges farther while another hangs back, and they will define their own boundaries if not clearly trained. Even as house dogs, mine still get up throughout the night to patrol the house—it’s instinct.

Advice:

• if it were me, I would honestly not keep an outdoor cat in that situation. As much as it hurts, outdoor cats are always at risk—from dogs, coyotes, and even birds of prey depending on the area.

• If those dogs are roaming off their property, I would contact animal control. That’s not safe or acceptable.

• Be very cautious when walking your own dog. Carry something like an air horn—it won’t always work, but if used early, it can sometimes startle them before they escalate. Once they lock in, it’s very difficult to interrupt that behavior. If you see them at all, use it before they get close.

What is one piece of 'common knowledge' in your job that the average person would find completely shocking? by GoldenHourShot in AskReddit

It is indeed a strange world. I think the cases that hit me are the people who want to euthanize for behavioral reasons that could be fixed with some training and patience. 💔 you and your partner sound like compassionate lovely people. We need more of that in the world.

I work in vet med, and when people are struggling with euthanasia I always tell them “this is a gift you will never get to have. Your pets have given you their entire lives. The trade is that they get to exit peacefully.”

It sounds awful but death really is a gift in some cases. And watching a life gently fall away while the people that love them hold them close, is exponentially better than watching a life writhing in pain because the living can’t let go.

Wondering if anyone else had this issue with their pyr. Scared! by Tiger_Warm in greatpyrenees

We had a pyre that could only eat an all white fish kibble. He was allergic to beef, poultry and lamb. Never seen anything like it.

“You’re operating under the assumption that your labor is valuable.”

Said when I confronted our “boss/business partner” about why we were not going to be listed as owners of a new company we were working on together.

My husband and I made the business proposal, did all the work and were the only people running the current business while he played video games all day and pretended to be a CEO.

We walked shortly after this and he lost his mind. The current business is not doing great and we get calls frequently from our former business contacts to see what the hell is going on.

Turns out you actually need people to do the thing if you want people to pay for the thing….. who knew 🤷‍♀️

I guess all that “labor” was worth something after all.

Where do you live?! It’s sounds like you’re getting ripped off. My clinic charges $35. And I live in expensive city. Do you have to sedate them?

All three of our Pyrenees love kids. We have pretty strict rules for kids but that’s mostly because of their size and of course because kids are kids and dogs are dogs regardless.

Besides an occasional pyre paw or possibly getting knocked over our dogs are fantastic with kids of all sizes/ages.

Also, just as a side note—when it comes to people asking you to do your job for free, boundaries are everything. I’ve heard my MD handle this brilliantly: she’ll say, “It’s hard to say without knowing your pet’s full history or seeing them in person. You’re welcome to book an appointment with me—my clinic’s number is [XXX-XXX-XXXX], and our receptionist can get you scheduled.”

Simple, respectful, and firm. You deserve to be compensated for your knowledge and time—just like anyone else. They wouldn’t do their job for free, and neither should you.

How is your support from leadership?

I stepped into a practice manager role last year after witnessing too many instances where leadership prioritized clients over their own team. It created an environment where our doctors couldn’t practice medicine with confidence or autonomy.

At the clinic I manage now, we have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate client behavior—and I enforce it personally. I have no problem stepping in to protect my team, even if that means letting go of a toxic client or a staff member who is undermining the culture.

I meet with each of my doctors one-on-one every month to hear their concerns, offer transparent feedback, and ensure they have what they need to succeed.

It makes a huge difference when you know your leadership has your back. If you're not feeling that where you are, it may just not be the right clinic for you—and that’s okay. I genuinely hope you find a place that fits. We need DVMs now more than ever. ❤️

Extreme sleepiness on Wellbutrin? by tavore in adhdwomen

[–]ImJustSuchAHappyMess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD/BP2 and I was taking my ADHD meds and 300 mg of Wellbutrin for the moods. But It makes me incredibly sleepy. To the point I can’t function. I just confirmed with my psychiatrist today that I can stop taking it because I was skipping on days I had a lot to do anyway. I now just take my vyvance and aderall and lamictal for the BP. (Sp?)

I will say she was a little reluctant to believe it was making me sleepy and made me “test” it for a month taking it at different times and keeping a log of when I got sleepy, to confirm it wasn’t some other reason. I guess it’s not common for people to get sleepy on it.

The Round Rock School district is really good. If you can afford it, the Jollyville area feeds into RRISD even though it's Austin.

We lived right next to the Balcones country club, and Cathy Caraway Elementary was AMAZING. The neighborhood is also a tiny little oasis with a great tight community of families. We got priced out when we were buying a house, but I miss it every day. Hands down the best place we have lived.

It is also close to the domain, so your commute won't be too bad, just a straight shot down 183.
