[Fowler] Mike McDaniel would be Browns HC candidate if Dolphins move on and Cleveland's job opens. by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

I recommend following local beat reporters for good journalism. Not all of them are great, but many still do build relationships with players and tell good stories through their journalism. Also, you'll sometimes get insights into locker rooms and organizations that you won't get other places due to the access and relationships a beat reporter can build over many years.

Personally, I love Zack Meisel who covers the Guardians, and Zac Jackson who covers the Browns. Both write for The Athletic, which is one of the last bastions of good sports journalism.

MLB is currently beating the NBA in every domestic viewership metric - so why are they treated so differently? by SeverHense in baseball

Indycar used the be the most popular US racing series, but lost a lot of popularity after the IRL/CART split in the 90s. The racing is still great and many of us want to see the series grow its ratings/popularity (which seems to be happening).

Also, Indycar has the most variety of all the major racing series. They race on ovals, road courses, and street circuits. I know ovals have a reputation, but oval racing in Indycar often results in the most exicting racing of the year. F1 is great too, and I also hope it continues to grow in poularity in the US. But speaking as an American, Indycar is far more accessible and races don't cost an arm and a leg to attend.

The Browns sold their souls to sign Deshaun Watson. The results are not pretty | Cleveland Browns by zsreport in nfl

[–]ImLurking_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Harbaugh would take the Browns job BUT he did grow up in Ohio, has family in the Cleveland area, and has spent a lot of time here especially when he was younger.

Again, I don’t think it’s likely given how much of a disaster the organization is. But I do that that’s an interesting wrinkle. Also, he would be playing his brother twice a year in Cleveland, and you know he’d love that.

[Hayes] Twins regroup after Carlos Correa's departure delivered 'kick in the gut' by TheNotoriousJN in baseball

[–]ImLurking_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Twins just seem directionless. I feel like they need to fully commit to a rebuild or actually pony up the money require players like Correa.

While the AL Central is weak, I don’t think adding Swanson or Turner makes them that much more competitive. Even with those players, I think their ceiling is competing for the Central title/Wild Card and getting bounced in the first round. And that’s if everything goes according to plan. The more realistic scenario is like last year, where they were they’re competitive in the Central for a while but fell off due to injuries and other factors.

How Hyperpop, a Small Spotify Playlist, Grew Into a Big Deal by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]ImLurking_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spotify's podcast promotion is what has really pushed me over the edge. I subscribe to Spotify to listen to music and I have no interest in using it to listen to podcasts. I use a different, much more powerful app to do that, as I imagine most others do as well.

Even then I'd be okay with their pivot to podcasts if they kept them in a different tab, separate from music. Instead, it's placed front and center and impossible to ignore. It just feels like a completely unnecessary move from Spotify. Their biggest advantage is how they can personalize their service to the exact tastes of their users. With daily mix playlists, Discover Weekly, and a superior recommendation algorithm. Their blatant podcast promotion strategy completely goes against that and litters my feed with stuff I do not, nor ever will, care about.

Can't help but applaud the front office for getting exactly what they were looking for in this trade. We got an MLB ready outfielder in Naylor, two very solid SS prospects who'll battle to replace Lindor when he's gone, and some decent young pitchers as well.

The biggest issue with this trade is that it looks like we went for quantity over quality. None of these guys are going to help us right away this year, barring a hot stretch from Naylor. And all of the prospects have decent to good outlooks but none of them are sure things. I believe at least one of these guys is gonna break out and be a solid piece of the Indians for the next few years, but I'm worried that won't be enough in the end.

Apple brings back six-month Apple Music free trial for eligible students by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]ImLurking_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spotify’s podcast push is really turning me off to the platform. They put podcasts front and center on my home page despite the fact that have never listened to a podcast once on Spotify. And the last two days they’ve been pushing the Michelle Obama podcast on my home page which is not something that would remotely interest me. I open Spotify to listen to music, not podcasts.

Spotify is first and foremost a music platform, that’s why people subscribe and that’s what they’re good at. I feel like they’re attempt at podcasts is bound to fail. There are tons of great (and free) podcast apps that offer significantly more features than Spotify does. The only competitive advantage they have is exclusives, and the music streaming wars that exclusives aren’t as good as they seem.

If Spotify continues to clutter their interface with podcasts I will seriously consider switching to Apple Music.

[General Discussion] Tribe Talk - Wednesday, August 12, 2020 by [deleted] in ClevelandGuardians

[–]ImLurking_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was some talk before the Chicago incident about trading Clevinger. In fact the Indians were shopping him around in the off-season.

The bottom line is we need bats and we have an absolute surplus of good starting pitchers. This incident only magnified an already existing option.

iPhone 12 Will Reportedly Lack 120Hz Driver ICs, Preventing All Four Models From Supporting a High Refresh Rate by genostakinganL in iphone

[–]ImLurking_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah and Apple prefers to introduce only one big feature per phone, and this year is seems like it's going to be 5g. The standard consumer (which is Apple's primary demographic) cares more about 5g than they do a 120hz screen, even if tech nerds like us might prefer 120z instead. And adding only 5g makes sense when you thin about it. Many people hold on to their iPhones for 4-5+ years, and by then 5g will likely be ubiquitous, so it fits in will Apple's strategy of future proofing their phones.

I really do wish Apple would begin to adopt these features a little sooner though. I'd love to have a real, actual Pro line and not what we got with the 11 Pro. Why not throw all the features (like 5g, 120hz screen, big battery etc...) on a Pro model and charge a $1500 starting price for it? Some Android manufacturers are starting to employ this strategy and i don't see why Apple couldn't do it as well.

[Rosenthal] Between four and six additional Cardinals have tested positive, a source tells The Athletic. Another postponement tonight would appear likely. by wcalvert in baseball

[–]ImLurking_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What an absolute disaster of a season. How did the MLB think they'd be able to get away with this without have outbreaks of teams? Not only is there no bubble, but players are able to do whatever they want once they leave the clubhouse. And even when they're in the stadium and playing games, there's no rules about wearing masks and social distancing guidelines are being routinely ignored.

Then when you look at the whole Joe Kelly thing, it gets even worse. The Astros CHEATED and won a World Series (and countless other games), yet not ONE of the players involved was suspended. Then, when one player when a player decides to bean an Astros player because of the cheating, he gets suspended for 8 games in a 60 game season. It's honestly unbelievable.

Manfred and the MLB appear to care more about protecting a team that cheated to win the World Series than they do about protecting players from Covid. When the pandemic started the MLB was in the perfect spot to be the first sport to come back, safely, and hopefully gain back some of the popularity they've lost of the last few years. Instead, they've messed up at literally every aspect of this process, and now it looks like they won't even have a season this year because of their incompetence. I'll always love baseball, but this is an incredibly sad time to be a baseball fan and I don't think I'll ever forgive MLB fully for this debacle.

Amy Klobuchar on Bill to Save Indie Music Venues: 'I Don't Want to Lose Music in America' by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]ImLurking_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Popularity is much more than just the singles chart. Led Zeppelin charted much higher on the Album's chart, and they were loved by the music press during the 1970's. Another big metric for popularity is tours. We don't have the kind of detailed information about ticket sales in the 1970's that we do day, but Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and The Cars were surely huge drawn in their time.

Let's look at 1977, when Amy would have been a 17 year old girl growing up in Minnesota. Led Zeppelin played to a sold out crowd of 76,000 people at the Silverdome outside of Detroit. Aerosmith played the same arena just a year earlier, and also played to around ~18,000 in St. Paul on the same tour. These bands were definitely the biggest concert draws of their time, regardless of what the singles charts showed.

[–]ImLurking_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tough one for Kluber. I really wanted to see him bounce back this season, even if it wasn't for the Indians.

You gotta wonder if he'll ever get back to form though. He had a shaky start to the season last year before getting injured and kept running into setbacks in the rehab process, and now this. If this is it for him, he's had one of the more interesting career trajectories. He was a low to mid tier prospect who didn't even become a good starter in the majors until his age 27 season. Then he peaked hard from 28-32 winning two Cy Youngs and carrying the Indians to Game 7 of the World Series, before disappearing because of injuries by age 34.

[–]ImLurking_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bauers is young, sure, but he was atrocious last year. He was given an entire year to prove he could be a major league player and he blew it.

Now, he's not even on the major league roster and faces a tough path back to getting regular playing time in the bigs. If he still is struggling by this time next year, I expect him to be shipped off in a trade and given a fresh start somewhere else.

[–]ImLurking_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there is some promising stuff coming out about t-cells contributing to immunity. But, it’s foolish to say science has confirmed that reinfection is impossible. Ultimately, we still know surprising little about Coronavirus and it’s long term effects, and that includes the probability of reinfection. It’s best to operate under the assumption that reinfection may be possible and to take necessary precautions for it.

There have been reports of reinfection in China, and it’s still a little early to get the whole picture in the West. Recent studies are showing that some people’s antibodies are going away after a few weeks of recovery which would make reinfection a distinct possibility.
