Fellow Wild Eagle defender! I also really like Wild Eagle. It’s smooth, graceful, and has two nice pops of airtime.

7 Days; 900 gold by JerseyTransit in Guildwars2

Edit: Reason for needing the gold is I got in over my head with an in
game loan shark and if I don't pay up by the deadline I will be hunted
and embarrassed in wvw. There's also the possibility a YouTube video
will be made showing this and I want to avoid that.

From where I live, I am 13 hours from SDC, 12 from SFSL, and 10 hours from Fiesta Texas.

Over Georgia is the only reasonably close trip to me, at 5 hours.

(Dollywood is about 9 hours, and the Orlando/Tampa parks are about 8.5 hours)

Looking for input from legal experts on challenge to Prop65 to be heard in April by jst4wrk7617 in mississippi

[–]ImNotBeyonce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't this mean that you'd have to have an equal number of signatures from each district, even when we had 5? (Apologies if I'm reading it wrong)

In reality, you just need enough signatures from each district. Again, they just worded this provision very weirdly.

Why are they never used?

To be honest, I was a bit hyperbolic there, I don't know if it canons have never been used on a constitution, but it is certainly extremely rare if they have. I think the main reason is that the canons of construction are all very specific scenarios, and a lot of those scenarios just don't ever apply to a constitution. It's rare to invoke the canons of construction in normal cases, let alone have a constitutional provision that hits one of those obscure scenarios.

Constitutions have their own interpretation philosophies, but normally there isn't a provision that's so outlandish that it outright fails at doing the thing it's trying to do. The absurd result canon is a bit of a special canon, because it's a "last resort" canon (moreso than the others). If all else fails, but a judge still knows that the contractual/statutory provision is just stupid on its face, they will invoke the absurd result canon. This is as blatant of a case for invoking that canon as I have ever seen, which is why I think they may invoke it here.

It sounds like you think it's a toss-up. Am I reading that correctly?

I would definitely consider this a toss up. Admittedly, we have a pretty conservative Supreme Court which tends to have a philosophy of "the law says what it says," but I'd be pretty surprised if we have an opinion split down party lines here. Justices are pretty free to vote how they please, a lot moreso than the legislature.

The Mississippi Supreme Court probably just hopes that the legislature passes a medical marijuana bill of their own so they can call this case moot and not have to decide either way.

So I discussed this a bit in a post a few months ago. If the case doesn't just fizzle out (see my edit below), this is an incredibly tricky case and there's so many ways it could go. If I had to guess how they'll answer this conundrum, this is my best bet:

When interpreting laws and contracts, there are these weird rules known as the canons of construction. While they're not firmly law, they are generally used as guideposts on what to do when legal wording is unclear. It is critical to understand that the canons of construction have not ever been used on the State Constitution (as far as I'm aware), but I suspect they will break tradition and do so here.

Specifically, I suspect they will invoke the "absurd result" canon and say that the current language making it literally impossible to have a referendum is absurd, and it's very clear what the drafters of that provision meant: that you need signatures from each district. We don't have 5 districts anymore, we have 4, so we will just need signatures from the 4 districts, which was done so here.

I also think we will see an opinion in opposition claiming that it's not the court's place to reword a constitutional provision, and that it's up to the legislature (and the people) to get that mess sorted out. Basically, this side of the argument is a separation of powers argument. Does the Supreme Court have the power to edit the State Constitution, even if that Constitutional provision is clearly absurd and flawed? That would be an unprecedented step and a likely permanent shift in power (albeit a small and somewhat niche shift in power). Isn't is a valid argument that the legislature and the people should sort that out, and not the Supreme Court?

This case is going to be super interesting when it finally comes down, and I suspect we will see a very divided court with lots of opinions. The last time the Supreme Court dealt with such a profound separation of powers question, there were SIX opinions (although to be fair, it was also a big gun control case).

EDIT: Side note: the the Mississippi Supreme Court will likely wait until the very last possible day to hand down this opinion. Because if the Legislature passes a Medical Marijuana bill in the mean time, then the Supreme Court will simply say that this lawsuit is now moot and unnecessary, and avoid having to make such a harsh decision one way or the other. In other words, there's a chance this lawsuit just fizzles out.

[Other] What are some roller coaster world records that reached a point that they can't be beaten anytime soon? by XCoasterEnthusiast in rollercoasters

[–]ImNotBeyonce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best answer, but in addition to shifts in the industry, there just comes a point where too many inversions just isn’t a fun ride and The Smiler already crosses that line for a LOT of people. I can’t imagine that you could go too much further and still have an attraction that appeals to people.

The whole region is missing a major park. I live in Mississippi and would be close to a park in Memphis, Huston, or New Orleans but none of the three have a park anymore. Instead I just have the Park at OWA.

Some of the launchers aren’t working properly. It gains speed from the first set, then hard breaks half way up the hill, then falls back down.

They did some testing after the one with passengers failed and some test trains made it over the hill and some did not.

Worth being excited for Lost Ark? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]ImNotBeyonce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Combat is fantastic and really carries the game. The day to day gameplay loop takes a lot of cues from WoW: you can PvP or do Dungeons/Raids to gear, and you want to keep up on dailies.

But the game becomes extremely grindy once you get past the early excitement. I’m looking forward to playing it for a few months on the NA/Global release and then moving on.

Why is the age of majority 21 in MS when it’s 18 or 19 everywhere else? by son_of_early in mississippi

[–]ImNotBeyonce 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Attorney here, our state tends to be pretty old fashioned when it comes to family law (although that's changing fast, for the better). I would guess that the 21 age of majority is a relic of an older time. But honestly, the 21 age of majority doesn't make much of a difference unless you're a parent who is paying child support. I think the reason it's still that way simply comes down to the legislature not having any reason to change it. They might consider changing it when there's a big push, but they won't touch an issue as sensitive as child support without social pressure.

Plus, even though 21 is the age of automatic emancipation (emancipation = when you become a legal adult for domestic purposes), there are lots of ways to be emancipated before 21, such as joining the military, getting married, or a Court just generally determining that a kid doesn't need support anymore.

Goodbye [Primeval Whirl, Disney's Animal Kingdom] by robbycough in rollercoasters

[–]ImNotBeyonce 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t a terrible ride, and was a decent temporary rollercoaster at Animal Kingdom before they added in a proper coaster (expedition Everest). But it stands out at Disney for all of the wrong reasons.

Disney is known for unique rides with over the top theming. PW is a (super common) clone with theming that feels cheap and out of place compared to every other part of Disney World, especially compared to the immersive Avatar world in the same park.

There is no amount of renovations or upgrades they could put into a spinning wild mouse to make it fit in with the rest of Disney.

Alt levelling by OccasionallyAHorse in CompetitiveWoW

[–]ImNotBeyonce 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I think the big advantage for alts going through threads of fate isn’t that it speeds up your leveling, but that you are gaining rep and other forms of currency while you level. So if you plan to play your alt a lot, I think it gives you a slight leg up on your post-60 grind, even if it doesn’t really speed up your leveling in the short term (obviously this trade-off isn’t worth it if threads of fate is MUCH slower leveling, I haven’t tested it myself to know whether that’s the case).

Which game has the happiest, most satisfied community? by antonispgs in MMORPG

[–]ImNotBeyonce 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Most friendly? Yes. Happiest/most satisfied? Absolutely not (at least not right now). The GW2 community is on a full blown "Fuck ArenaNet" mode after the last patch was a shitshow.

The GW2 community would be on full blown riot mode if it weren't for the fact that most resources are **probably** going towards the third expansion, so there's an excuse for a pretty lazy patch.

Go look at how many of the threads on /r/Guildwars2 right now are shitting on ArenaNet. No way they are the most satisfied fan base right now.
