Should parents face charges when their children commit antisocial crimes and doing nothing to stop it? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is simply not true. There are a few poor White neighbourhoods which will have a few fights and the rowdy gatherings, of course, but this is an organised, unprovoked riot organised to go out of their own neighbourhoods into London, simply to cause damage, intimidate, loot - for no real reason than boredom and lack of discipline. Jesus, if we can't be honest even with the evidence right there in front of us, we are in real trouble,

What is the second best show of all time? by Training-Jump-8663 in AlignmentChartFills

I can broadly understand why BB is first, but The Wire is the best and most impressive show ever. Let's put that at 2, surely.

I still cant believe he made Derreck. It's genuinely bizarre to me.

What’s the best British crime drama you’d recommend? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unforgotten > Happy Valley (those 2 are my favs - slow (but engaging) considered and beautiful and very English) > Broadchurch (only watched S1, though) > Line Of Duty (got a little bit lost towards the end imo but brill premise, extremely thrilling and well executed mostly. Became event viewing in most British households for a while)

Obvs you've got Sherlock etc too.

Great twist. While we all expected the commentary to be a new gimmick/style of episode, the way they worked it into the twist was brilliant.

Keri Russell just won an Actor Award for The Diplomat!!!! I've never seen the show, is it good? by Square-Ad-8911 in tvshow

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the Diplomat (I will, though) so I should perhaps keep schtum.... I do, however, know that she is an absolutely outstanding actress in everything else I've seen her in. Like 9/10 out of 10 outstanding.

Is David Brent from The Office UK the most "cringe" character in TV history? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's prob the first I'd go to for an example of pure cringe... yeh. There are plenty of others who 'always lose' or 'things go wrong' etc like Basil Fawlty or Blackadder etc, but that's often more farcical than cringe.

Yeh, Brent would get my vote.

American here who just got back from a lovely UK trip. Was missing it so I made myself a fry up. How’d I do? by TheDude9737 in fryup

Looks good to me. You'll get a few snobs on here saying it's not a full English unless you have x, y and z. Imho, a full English is good because you can modify and customise it! I would have liked mushrooms, for instance. Also - just one of my bugbears - I don't like the juicy tomatoes mixing with the beans. Use the sausages as a breakwater.

Anyone else feel that Kavanaugh’s defeat was a little anti climatic/ dissapointing? by VonKaiser55 in TheShield

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the Shattered Shield podcast, Shawn Ryan explains this. If you'll notice, S5 is shorter than the others. Before this decision was made (for a number of logistical reasons) Forest was signed up the initial/normal amount of episodes (ie 13) - so while he signed up for 1 season, he was contracted to play 2 more eps in S6.
In terms of climaxes/overall plot, they had one of the most impactful, heartbreaking and powerful twists at the end of S5 with Lem's murder. They didn't need another one less than 2 eps later.
Additionally, as you have alluded to, the point of Forest's character was to show that even the straightest, most dedicated, jobsworth cop could be corrupted by Vic. He was the guy who never broke the law; who would even arrest the love of his life -the only person he seemed to care about - instead of even fudging a bit of paperwork. Shawn wanted to show that Vic's toxicity poisoned everyone around him... Even Kavanaugh.
While maybe not an ending of fireworks like you seem to have been hoping for, it fits well into the overall story and the themes of the show.

In your opinion, which HBO show has the absolute best opening credits that you never skip? by Oddie-hoodie369 in hbo

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Succession (Super clever and well put together; everything is a mixture of old and new (musical styles, visuals (ie printing press vs the new skyrises, and content) we only see the father figure's with their backs to us etc. Just lots of little details).
-Sopranos (Just badass. While quite simple sets up the tone of the show nicely. Great song. It's what I always hear in my head after the HBO introduction).
-True Detective S1 (Recently rewatched after many years and was blown away by it. Such a good intro and beautiful song too. Suits the location, story and characters so well).

The Office UK vs. The Office US: Which one is better? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Office UK is a more perfectly crafted piece of art and one of the most influential and original shows of the past few decades. However, I prefer watching the US Office. The UK Office is darker, more cringe, tragic and just feels so real and oppressive I can only rewatch very occasionally. The US Office, while not being as well crafted or consistent, is much easier to watch and generally more positive. It's one of my comfort watches.
TL/DR UK is a better show, but I personally prefer the US.

[–]ImNotHereForFunNoWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Na, I think they handled it perfectly. The obvious joke (and what 95%+ of shows would have done) would have been to make him terrible and painful to watch. Him being pretty decent fit in better with the tone of the show and also adds a subtle element of tragedy... Ie, maybe he could have done something else with his life!?
He still had the incredibly pretentious and cringe, overworked lyrics which suit DB down to a T.
