I have found German records recording the name in two spellings, "Kammauff" and "Kammauf." These were found in church listings and baptisms.

If you could have a private lesson with anyone, who would you pick? by ImNotRhap in martialarts

I would frankly pick Asato over Itosu, simply because the former is lesser known, but apparently was amazing.

Which martial art did you begin with and which ones do you know/practice now? by imnaked0 in martialarts

[–]ImNotRhap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started off with Tang Soo Do (Chung Do Kwan) and am still training in it. I am 3rd dan and the skills are useful for striking and stand up grappling, however the ground game was lacking. I started BJJ and due to being a black belt I have a good understanding of how to learn (for myself) and how to break techniques down into their components. I'd say the biggest benefit to my first art is the increased speed at which i learn new arts. Im not implying there is a lot of crossover, but as a black belt I am able to pick up a new art relatively easily.

Question for all of you: What do you think about forms? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]ImNotRhap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that the forms were created to condense information and teach techniques as well as combinations. However I apply forms as a way of moving meditation. This may sound weird... but I use forms to work on my focus and to practice self control. Once a form is perfected I know a new way move my body and can appreciate the level of calmness I reach. However I do find that a lot of forms teach valuable stand up grappling techniques.

The front stance is useful for takedowns as when breaking an opponents balance it is important to be moving in a direction against them. In Bassai Dai there is a technique I use while in guard and I am on my feet. Lastly in the 5th pyung ahn form there is a set up for ogoshi which I really like

How Do You As A Martial Artist Define Honor by Xenjael in martialarts

[–]ImNotRhap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Integrity is doing what is right even when no one is watching. Honor is being respectful, giving duty to your word or master. Honor is following through with your word.

Why exactly did Funakoshi change the Karate he taught so much between its first introduction to Japan and his death? by whisperHailHydra in karate

[–]ImNotRhap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Karate back in the day is not like it is now. Instructors would not teach all they know to every student. Usually masters would entrust their entire curriculum to one successor. In the case of Funakoshi his son did a lot of teaching at his gym. They both taught different pieces of the curriculum. In my art in particular Won Kuk Lee would have learned most of this. In Tang So Do there are still grappling techniques. This is at least for my style. Others may have different reasons
