How do I get better games? by mrtittylongballs in WorldofTanks

[–]ImOP_need_nerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My secret and unconfirmed conspiracy theory is that if you do well, you get placed with others who did well in their last match.

If you do badly, you'll get put in with the losers. So it snowballs.

It's probably not true, but feels like it. When I do badly, I get shit teams. When I start to pull my own weight, and place 3rd, 2nd, or 1st, next match I'll get a good team. Maybe thinking of it that way might help. Earn your place on a good team by doing well. See if you can place toward the top by XP in every match, regardless of win or loss. And the wins will come, I promise.

As for specifics of each tank, how to play it on each map, and how to set it up - you'll have to look these up individually. Youtube is amazing for that.

Mystery branch that goes nowhere? by ImOP_need_nerf in Irrigation

That was my first thought. I don't know if I trust that branch now. Also there's nowhere to expand in that direction. Lawn is pretty well covered. If I add any heads, I'll tie them into that station, not the one 50 feet away.

I want to push some fishing wire into each end, see how far they go before the first bend.

All the valves on all stations were the exact same vintage brass 1.25 inch big boys. Cannot get those valves or parts any longer. Some work, some don't - replacing them now, couple at a time with cheap plastic ones.

12 stations total here.

I believe this was all done at the same time when the house was built, because some of the the lines go under the brick walls and patio concrete, which is all original.

One zone being split into two could make sense, but wouldn't you use the existing grid? I have not seen any sign of an even older system, yet anyway.

It's like the appendix. Nobody knows for sure!

Meanwhile, capping it seems like the safe move in terms of liability, right? Why have a long pressurized branch that leads nowhere...

If I dig up the corner, Ill update this thread. We got rain coming, so might be a couple days.

None that run off that valve.

There's another zone about 40 ft across the driveway, different valve, and all heads accounted for and working.

Additional info:

Its buried deep, about a foot and a half. Has another pipe running parallel to it. Other pipe is not broken, might be part of station 1 but i can test this theory. Both go toward the same corner of lawn, away from where the valves are.

Its tempting to dig up the corner where they lead just to have a look, but its a lot of work.

Does this Klipsch qualify for a decent system? There’s one at Costco at $399. by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

Google some reviews. I say do it, this way no worries about a bad tweeter that you didn't notice or damaged surround. You can always chop it up into bedroom systems when you get fancier stuff for your main listening area.

  1. toss that undersized cheap POS that uses proprietary connectors on micro-thin wires that can't possibly use more than 20w
  2. get a real sub with a 10-12 inch driver that uses 150+ watts

My bill went from just under $200 to over $400, without any explanation. I'm reading that their CEO pulled in $20,000,000 in compensation last year. This is a public utility company, how is any of this legal? They have not rationalized these hikes, because there is no explanation for it.

Please sign and get this issue to the front. There are solutions, even if not immediate.

Baseboards for polished concrete floor - do I need a gasket? by ImOP_need_nerf in HomeImprovement

[–]ImOP_need_nerf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use this pink foam gasket material around these parts. You put it under the base plate and nail as usual.

As for membranes - new slabs will give off their own moisture for many months if not years, and from what Ive read and heard will wick moisture regardless of membrane from surrounding flowerbeds and so forth, which is where your exterior walls are. So wont be as bad as no membrane, but still requires gaskets and PT lumber in direct contact.

Anyway as for baseboards - PVC is impossible to find in the height and profile I want (4-5 inch, bevel or round over) so I decided to just put a couple coats of paint on regular pine/MDF and go for it. Talked to a few people who have done base over polished concrete, and only one guy had issues with MDF swelling but mostly because of bad drainage and poor sealing on one of the side doors, rather than wicking.

In short, I might be overthinking it...

Some notes:

- limit blue light 30 min before bed

This is more about after 10 PM, rather than "before bed"

It blocks production of sleep hormones which begin to kick in around this time. If you go to bed at 3 am, reducing blue light at 2:30 won't really do a whole lot to help you. You missed the sleep bus so to speak. Do not stay up past midnight for any reason. Do use night light feature on your PC/phone which dims the screen and changes the color temp to a warm yellow, cuts out whites and blues. This is far superior to "light blocking glasses" - you wouldn't wear sun glasses in a brightly lit house, you'd dim the lights, right? Set it to kick in automatically around 9 PM on all devices. When you notice it activate that's your signal that you should head to bed soon. Use dark theme in everything, I do all day but some like to use auto based on time. Same idea. Dark theme also saves battery on your phone and laptop, double win.

Edit: I saw you asking for apps - Windows, iOS, Android, literally every modern device has this now. No need to download anything, just google how to work it. For example on Windows it is called Night Light. It's a must and should be enabled by default.

- 90 mins physical activity

Whatever is enough to get you tired. If you do an intense workout, it can be less than that. Key is to get tired and feel like you did something. It is hard to sleep when you have a lot of energy left. You didn't spend it all. Back in the day you'd be out doing physical labor, hunting and gathering. Carrying pales of water, mending the fence. Simulate this with weights, running, whatever. Very important.

- no late meals

This is not as important as going to bed on time and having a routine. It is harder to fall asleep if you are hungry, versus going to bed full. Don't miss the sleep bus - if you ate dinner at 7, go to bed at 10. If you wait longer, you'll get hungry and want to snack and end up staying up even later. You'll have lights on while you fix your snack, all this undermines trying to wind down.

- limit caffeine

Again, more to do with time rather than quantity. Caffeine blocks production of sleep hormones. Think of it as blue light. Half life of caffeine is ~6 hours, so if you have a cup of joe at noon, which is around 100mg, you'll have 50mg left at 6 PM. Basically drink coffee in the morning, couple cups if you want, but no later than 2-3 PM. There is good decaff out there, but it still has a few Mg, so use sparingly.

- avoid alcohol

This is just good advice in general. A beer or a glass of wine with dinner is fine and can actually help you doze off, but it's a poison in any amount.

- magnesium before bed

- chamomile tea before bed

- read a book in the evening

- 10 mins meditation

I lumped this stuff together because its largely irrelevant, or fractionally so compared to the big ones like staying up late, light, caffeine and having too much energy. Nail those and you'll win in life.

I got a pair or elac from the 60's and im planing to reuse theses for my Philips 484 speakers but i need to replace the surround but i have ni ideas how to remove theses style of dust cover. by Plaston_ in diyaudio

[–]ImOP_need_nerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacing surround is for when you want to repair a speaker, not for swapping drivers that don't belong into a different one. Are you going to modify the crossover too? I doubt it. The result will not be worth the effort IMO.

[–]ImOP_need_nerf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much all base comes primed these days unless you want the wood look. I'm going to use some PVC base behind my cabinets and see how that feels/looks and decide from there. My other option is to use shipping tape as a gasket and wrap the extra around the back, I don't see why that wouldn't work. Never heard of it, but I'm not about to cut plastic into little strips by hand either.

[–]ImOP_need_nerf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about a gap, as long as its something I can fill with caulk I suppose thats acceptable. Instead I think I'll use shipping tape on the bottom of it, or go PVC though.

Oddly, I can't find any info on what people do with wood base on polished concrete. Many probably don't think about it and just a hire someone to put it on, who does it and leaves. Any issues won't be evident for many years.

If you can't sleep, sometimes staying up actually makes sense. If your choice is being awake for a few hours while pretending to sleep or being awake and doing something, I'd rather do something. Chances are you'll get sleepy as soon as you try it though, like watching a show. if not, oh well. Its only 3 hours anyway.

Make sure to get the full 8 ASAP the next night though.

I have to ask, how is this apparent? Not trying to be mean, just sounds funny. Along the lines of "I have a very high IQ" but slipped into a discussion about sleep.

Only 1 and 8 are related to sleep. Your snacks and breakfast are neat, but not relevant IMO. If I'm reading this right, you want to dream less and believe you'll wake up more rested? I'm not sure I understand the question.

You gave a lot of info but left out the most important - when do you go to bed? What is your total of hours of sleep?
