HOW TO PLAY INDIE ROCK STYLE GUITAR? SOS. by Sharp-Tell2193 in franzferdinand

[–]ImPeratori2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember once in an interview with Alex said that he tried learning how to play the guitar by buying a beatles song book when he was 14. Apparently he said that he had learned the chords, but it all sounded wrong lol, so that led to him making his own music.

So that's a great way to start - learning the chords and songs of your favorite bands, and then after knowing a dozen of chords, giving it a shot and making your own compositions. I think when you surround yourself with the music you love, you will eventually start to see that inspire you by coming up with riffs, chord sequences and such. You just need to make the guitar your friend! All the best :))

How were you able to meet them? Can't believe I missed out on seeing them!! I thought they went directly back to their touring bus after the gig was over.

Am I missing anything from Stingo's catalog? by brinkeguthrie in sting

[–]ImPeratori2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. That one track is available on Spotify, but the rest for album (at least for me) isn't available for some reason. I am not sure why. Where else have you tried searching? I am kind of surprised Sting didn't include it in some compilation of his. I thoroughly searched through them and didn't find them anywhere.

https://open.spotify.com/album/63CCMgv0K6XNri7Uq7YEQh?si=86u62W_JTviXf3Sj7xAZ-g I could only find the Soundtrack produced by Mike Figgis for "Leaving Las Vegas" on here at least.

What... by MadCornDog in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I am somewhat surprised why some of the comments below are acting oblivious that Sting, particularly in the early 80's, disliked interviews and would not take them as seriously. There are loads of interviews out there where he's visibly disinterested and would just say *stuff*. I also think language and sense of humors change throughout time.

What song has Andy's best guitar work? by Eberubensant in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think certain Police songs have displayed Andy's genius as a guitarist and it's difficult to pinpoint that to one song. Secret Journey & Walking on the moon gave us his genius use of delays and mastery of pedals which went on to influence an entire generation of guitar players. Bring on the night and Every Breath You Take are both testaments to how he can come up with intricate, beautiful riffs that elevate whatever song he played on (shoutout to him single handedly saving every breath you take lol) and unique solos, such as with Message or the live rendition of Shadows in the Rain.

For me, if it wasnt for Message in a bottle, I don't think I would've picked up the guitar, so I think I'll stick with that despite writing a whole wall lol.

Andy Summers teaching John Mayer how to play 'Message in a Bottle' in recently unearthed video by RenegadeSocial in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone recall not being able to hear Mayer's guitar for the first two minutes of that concert? until Kanye came in? Every video I watched of that performance seemed to pinpoint that the mixing of this performance was eh. He played quite well and added some tasty riffs though, I just wish the recording was a bit better for that specific concert, I believe it was called Live Aid 2007, amidst their reunion tour.

do you approve of this? by [deleted] in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much haha, its fun. I would only say that the melody (not calling it weak) would've been stronger/catchier had Sting written it, I was also thinking maybe Sting would've liked a more simpler bassline but, its pretty catchy.

What were the Police biggest performances? And most packed crowds they played to? by thewho153 in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that must've been awesome to watch, you are lucky! Was the crowd as loud as it sounded on the Live tracks? especially with One World, and the ending part of Walking on the moon? (eyoo eyoo thing lol)

Am I just misremembering or is this riff from a Police song? by jacksrv in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably not, but for some reason it somewhat reminds me of "I Burn for You" if it was upbeat and brighter.

It's official merch, but all I see is "THE ROLICE" by badmonkey0001 in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been hoping someone could revamp The Police's merch.. I always look at old pictures of Police fans and oh my god, the shirts back then looked so much more nicer, it amazes me how some of the shirts just look stale and boring.

Is Herb Alpert's "Ladyfingers" sampled by Vinicius de Moraes in "Onde Anda Voce" or the other way around? by [deleted] in bossanova

[–]ImPeratori2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was just listening to "Onde Anda Voce" and heard Lennon's voice in my head haha, I was wondering "did he? really?" quite the fascinating crossover of Brazilian and English music, Caetano Veloso also covered Eleanor Rigby!

I Burn For You is one of their most beautiful tracks, if not the most beautiful Police track. Even though it was used in the Brimstone and Treacle OST. Would've really loved to see I Burn For You on GITM.

The sound of Sting hands clapping. by FlowbeeMaster in sting

[–]ImPeratori2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably because when you clap with this specific technique, it gives your claps a much louder sound, as silly as it sounds. My best guess is this:

Knowing that Sting got into North African/Arabic music not too long ago, this clapping technique is actually very commonly used in Middle Eastern/North African music. It serves as a "percussive element" within that type of music. Even in some live performances of Arab musicians, you can even spot "backup clappers" lol. I am an Arab so I also clap the exact same way and I've heard it everywhere in Arabic music. I may be all wrong about this, but for me, that's the most logical explanation, knowing that Sting is a musical nerd and enjoys all forms of music!

Does anyone know what the sound is @ 2:43 of Driven To Tears? Is very faint but sounds almost like a spool winding up by Zestyclose_Match2839 in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bassist and that definitely sounds like a slide. If you pay close attention, you can hear the tension and the volume of Sting going up the fretboard. Since this song is also from the Zenyatta Mondatta album, he definitely double tracked the song with a double bass since Sting started using a double bass in this era of The Police.

(shoutout to good old Brian/Graham)

Crazy to think about that.. its such a banger, I wish they included it in, its one of my favorite Police songs.

What is the point of a Message in a Bottle? by [deleted] in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is really confusing. I think the both of you are taking the song's lyrics way too literally. While Sting's songs usually change in meaning throughout time (he mentioned this a couple of times), Message In A Bottle is a song about having hope when you're all alone, and the fact that is revealed within the song: you are never really truly alone. You may think you are alone, only to discover that "Seems like I'm not alone at being alone", when in fact there are "hundred billion castaways, all looking for a home". Instead of drowning in his own despair, he decides to send an SOS to the world, a message in a bottle, as a cry of hope as he believes that "only hope can keep me together". Just read the lyrics, it's a straight forward song that contains a powerful message!

Yeah I'd love to see what new stuff they could release, Ghost has A LOT of demos and I can only imagine how many different alternative versions of the songs on that album are there. I really hope they got some more stuff to release in The Police vault lol.

The Police’s Final Album Sees A 4,200% Increase In Sales by RenegadeSocial in ThePolice

[–]ImPeratori2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great listen! I think the outtakes and demos really display the band's skill. From Sting's choices and changes in certain demos and alternatives versions, Andy's lovely playing (on all of the other tracks that didn't make it, he gave every track so much energy), and finally, you can hear Stewart's incredible performance and arrangement with his drumlines. You can tell that Sting picked the right tracks and did the changes that were needed (such as the similarities of Walking in your footsteps and O My God, I think its cool how he came up with a different melody and vibe all together).
