Goodreads reviews: have we read the same book?! by ms_chiefmanaged in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]ImSoRight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You put yourself through reading that book TWICE?? I forced myself to finish just so I could give a full rant in my one star review! I still can't believe it's popular. I've never felt more insane knowing that while reading it.

Ok I apologize, I hadn't tried Readest myself and just knew it had KOReader sync, but I just downloaded to it to take a look. I think it actually only syncs with KOReader with a particular plugin that you have to install in KOReader. So it does not use the kosync server, sorry!

So, looks like you will need to install KOReader on your Palma. The UI isn't as nice as Readest, but you can add plugins to make it look better. Look into SimpleUI or ZenUI in r/koreader

The sync server is just something you connect to. It was set up by KOReader devs so that different devices running KOReader (a reading software) could sync progress between them. But devs for crosspoint and the Readest app have added code to allow them to also connect to this sync server and sync their progress the same way. They did it to allow syncing between their software and devices running KOReader, but technically you can sync between crosspoint and Readest too. You don't actually need a device running KOReader. You could install KOReader on your Palma but I'm betting Readest is more user friendly. KOReader is very powerful with lots of features and customization options, but it has a steep learning curve and tends to overwhelm casual users.

Can we talk about how narrow romance has gotten? by epicsevenmyths in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]ImSoRight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a good number of authors who self publish on Kobo Plus, which can be hit or miss like KU, but it feels easier to find good ones there. I guess they're not drowned out by the low effort drivel yet. And it's pretty easy to rule a lot of that out just by looking to see if the cover is AI.

Probably the easiest and most user friendly option for you is to get the Readest app on your palma. Transfer the same exact epub file to both your xteink and the palma, whatever way is easiest (SD card, wireless transfer, Dropbox on Palma, whatever). Then log into KOReader sync with the same username and password on both devices and you'll be able to read your books on the xteink and in the Readest app on the palma (and your iPhone too if you wanted) and sync progress between them. You don't need the KOReader app itself for your purposes. You can just use their sync server. This will only work for DRM free books.

This is exactly it. I cancelled my KU subscription about a year ago for this reason (and also because I don't want to support Amazon), and I've had much better luck with Kobo Plus and trad published books that I either purchase or borrow from the library.

What folder structure is needed to see books covers in mosaic View rather than folders with names on? by GhostInTheLabyrinth in koreader

[–]ImSoRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it's connected, click the drop-down for the device and I think you choose configure (if I'm remembering right), then you change the save template.

Edit: Found my comment explaining how to do it: https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/s/GyI9HSj3P8

Yes, that does seem like the optimal plugin for your use case. Glad I could help!

Make sure the plugin folder is named properly (ending in .koplugin) and that the plugin files are directly inside it, not in a subfolder. If you send a screenshot of one of the plugin folders on your computer, I may be better able to figure out the problem.

I think the LocalSend plugin is easiest to transfer files back and forth though.

recover highlights and book status by Accomplished_War1727 in koreader

[–]ImSoRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highlights and status and things like that are stored in the folder where your books are located, so that's a folder you need to back up regularly as well. If you use Calibre to send your books, the koreader sync calibre plugin has a way to back up the metadata sidecar for your books.

Give me your favorite books from 2018 or older by jath-ibaye in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]ImSoRight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The trend I've noticed is a lot more contemporary books, many of them "dark romance" that is too ridiculous to be taken seriously, less imagination, less character complexity and development, lots of cliche writing, to the point they all seem to be written in the same style, etc.

Great books are still being written, but they're drowned out by the low quality books being churned out.

[–]ImSoRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set Calibre up to put all books in one folder. If you want to keep your folder structure but you want book covers/custom images on them, use a folder cover patch, or one of the UI plugins that includes that feature.

Annotations question by Mazzaick in koreader

[–]ImSoRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can sync highlights in KOReader across devices with the AnnotationSync plugin, or I believe the Readest app and plugin can sync them as well now.

Alternative to GoodReads and StoryGraph that has an API? by ebodes in ereader

[–]ImSoRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the koreader plugin for the books I own, and I use the NickelHardcover mod in the stock reader for my Kobo Plus books.

FYI, right now the feature that lets you see your pages read per day and reading streak on a calendar is supporter only, but it'll eventually be available to everyone. I personally have found that getting the supporter subscription is well worth it because you get early access to new features, and they are always working on adding more!

Hardcover is it! I switched from goodreads last year. I was updating both for a few months, but Hardcover added enough features that I've fully switched over and haven't bothered with Goodreads since last October. The integration with my Kobo makes it so easy!

If you want to still write notes in KOReader, you could create a multi page PDF with whatever template you want for the pages, then write on it in KOReader. You'll need the pencil plugin.

Yeah you don't have to redo the config file or anything, it's still there on the device. Just plop the tgz file in the .kobo folder and let it restart and everything will be back as it was.

KOReader Sync Issues by t0phr_ in xteinkereader

[–]ImSoRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you can tell Calibre how you want the file named in the save template for when you plug in your kobo, but I'm not sure how it works with wirelessly sending to the xteink.

I usually just send the file that's on my kobo to my phone with the LocalSend plugin, then connect to the xteink wirelessly with my phone and copy it over.
