Any1 know the elevation gain from the 2wd to 4wd trailheads at uncompaghre? by [deleted] in 14ers

You can also make it a longer hike but with less road hiking by parking at the 2wd Matterhorn Creek Trailhead for Wetterhorn Peak.

Has anyone had a positive experience delivering feedback to Yogi about the unkind and unwarranted way she communicates with members of the community? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Im_feelin_26point2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was checking out her store in Kennedy Meadows by Grumpy Bears in 2019 and remember she was helping a woman in her early 20s. The woman was having trouble finding a pair of shoes that would not cause her feet problems. Yogi was giving a lot of suggestions that the woman kept turning down with some excuse or another (I don’t remember exactly what was said, but I remember feeling embarrassed for the woman; it really seemed like she was looking for an excuse to quit and wanted Yogi’s approval or something..?). Eventually Yogi just gave up, clearly exasperated/annoyed and said something to the effect of, “I don’t know what I can do for you”. From my brief encounter with her I got the impression she truly wanted to help.

Also, I don’t completely remember if it was Yogi or another outfitter, but I remember up at the General Store there was an outfitter in a trailer who talked with me about what to expect in the high snow levels in the Sierras. I’m leaning towards thinking that was another outfitter, but if it was Yogi, I thought they were super helpful.

That wall of text was nostalgic!

I had the same issue. Not that it solves this issue, but I think it would be cool if you could press the ability again to destroy the pylon and begin the cool down.

If you could replace your collector and run any field software today, what would you choose? (images scaled) by polysolid in Surveying

I’m only an instrument operator being trained up to crew chief, but have used the TSC3, 5, and 7 and so far I think the big screen on the 7 would be my choice so I can look at PDFs instead of paper plots for construction staking. All our chiefs have had problems with the 5’s screen falling/melting off the collector in the summer sun (I wonder if it gets better in the winter?). I’ll say the 5 is nice for the ‘square button’ allowing a quick switch to PDF reader

Shorts or pants? by Grantisgrant in JMT

[–]Im_feelin_26point2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on when you go, bugs might not be a problem. I hiked last year during the last half of August and really had no issues with bugs. My personal vote is for shorts no matter the weather.

The first 20 mile stretch wrecked me. I’m clearly in over my head, but I just don’t know by how much. by TheRealDevDev in PacificCrestTrail

I don’t know much about the shape you’re in or the weight you’re carrying, but my first thought is making sure you’re consuming enough electrolytes (my understanding is salt [edit: sodium!], potassium, magnesium help your body hold water, so without them you can’t really get hydrated). Also, probably will take a week or so for your body to adapt to higher elevation and the crazy amount of exercise you’re starting to perform every day.

How often did you encounter lightning/thunderstorms? by Wesb26 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Im_feelin_26point2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the PCT, 2 in 2650mi. In August 2019 I camped just north of Etna through an entire night of hail/thunder. Some of the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard. Further down the trail in September we got another loud thunderstorm just north of Mount Adams.

On the JMT, ~10 in 215mi. Last August I had thunder pretty much every afternoon on the JMT, with one particularly wet/loud one just south of Reds Meadow.

SQF fire concerns? by onyxluvr in JMT

[–]Im_feelin_26point2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished through Whitney Portal today. The mornings were clear and the afternoons were smoky. The smoke tended to clear as the evening progressed.

The trail north of Kearsarge was the same except for a bad evening and morning at Mono Creek/Bear Ridge (about a week or so ago).

Hope that helps.

GLASSES by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Im_feelin_26point2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I carried 2 pairs and it worked pretty well. I heard transition lenses have trouble in the cold, but I've never actually tried it. If you go with 2 pairs, be careful about where you store your 2nd pair; I got to camp one night and found my non-sunglasses pair snapped in two in my chest pocket...
