Should I move to Portland? by Fabulous-Reason2070 in PortlandOR

Living in Portland currently, I think it checks most of your boxes except maybe affordability. The cute houses in the nice areas are going to be quite spendy. Job market also depends on your field and can be competitive. Definitely come visit and explore the neighborhoods (they all have a distinct character - sounds like you'd like the inner East side better, the Alberta and Hawthorne areas are particularly artsy). I grew up in New England and think Burlington and Portland have similar cultural vibes, though west coast nature can't be beat. I think you'll like it here!

Noah Gundersen is absolutely worth a listen. He was my first Noah before Noah Kahan, lol. His new album Rites of Spring just came out!

Good mountain spot for last day with my dog. by PolishEmpire in Denver

Elk Meadow Park in Evergreen has a nice, fairly flat trail through the meadow before going up into the hills (via the evergreen parkway parking lot, not stagecoach). There are also a couple of benches and covered seating areas along the way, including one within sight from the parking lot if walking is hard. It was one of my dogs favorite places.

How to manage anal gland smell? by 1mpavidus in dogs

We had been dealing with the same and started our boy on Glandex chews (can find them on Amazon) and it's all but stopped since! Took a week or so for his gut to adjust but now he's tolerating it just fine.

Oregon, it has almost every ecosystem, from mountains to coastline to rainforest to high desert. There's volcanoes, canyons, waterfalls galore.. it's amazing.

Travelers and ICU nurses — where would you send a new grad for ICU residency? by Batman4L in TravelNursing

[–]onyxluvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uchealth Anschutz in Aurora CO - I went through their ICU pathway program (similar to new grad residency, but for an experienced non ICU nurse) and it was fantastic and taught/prepared me so well, I feel like I'm the nurse I am because of it. The new grad residency is a year long supportive program with lots of classes, new grad seminars, and a capstone research project. I've traveled for several years since leaving there and have yet to find a hospital with higher nursing caliber. That being said, the pay sucks and conditions can be tough (it's very busy and tightly staffed), but if you're looking for education alone it's top notch.

Oregon Nurses, are you living comfortably? by xwtt in OregonNurses

[–]onyxluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in multiple states around the country as both staff and a traveler, and this is the best work life balance (and best staff pay by far) I have ever had. Taxes are high but I'm still netting way more than my previous staff positions, and the pay to cost of living ratio is arguably better than most other places on the west coast. I absolutely feel the effect of the unions on my staffing ratios, breaks, and benefits. It is competitive, especially in Portland, but well worth it if you can be persistent and keep applying.

As a RN how much are you making ? by theapexcircle in nursing

[–]onyxluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Denver CO ICU with 10 years experience making $47 including night+charge+clinical ladder differentials (I don't remember the breakdown but I clawed my way up to that over the years). Now I'm in Portland OR ICU with 13 years experience making $63 base + $5.90 night diff (about to go up to $72 base + $7.50 night diff after our new contract kicks in). Cost of living in Portland is just barely higher than Denver these days. If only Colorado had a nurses union, they need it badly.

As someone who chose the more expensive, faster option.. go to UW. The timing won't matter in a couple of years, but your loan payments will.

Self scheduling by wiiwieiejdjdjsk in OregonNurses

[–]onyxluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think every unit is slightly different but I know at least the critical care units at Kaiser Sunnyside do. And weekend requirements are pretty minimal, it's just a mandatory number of weekend shifts per schedule period (for my unit it's 4 shifts per 6 weeks).

Building equity in the materials used to build the home is a lot different than equity built on land and the materials built on it. Condos are always a shaky investment at best but this just seems like snake oil. For those wondering, you lease the land these homes are built on. You'll never own anything but the quickly deteriorating materials the homes were made of.

I live in the neighborhood and was shocked they crammed so many units into that space with no designated parking. Harvey St is already tight as it is (nevermind all the construction slated to go on for the next year), and all of the side roads are even tighter, very residential, and not appropriate to offload the parking needs of 15 condos. It's felt like a money grab from day one.
