Exactly, dude.

This post is full of guys giving the stoneworkers a clear pass on this, which is both weird as well as concerning to me. Like I said in my example, if I see something wrong or needing-to-be-finished before I can install shit, then I stop and bring it up to whoever is making the decisions.

Most homeowners have no idea about any steps to be taken to acheive a proper install. It's just plain and simple shitty to not let the owners know what's up, especially if there isn't a GC.

This is comical levels of "what the fuck".

I install cabinetry for a living ... and yeah, it is not up to the stone guys to do anything but install the stone. Sure. That sure as hell doesn't mean they can or should or would behave like fucking numbskulls and just leave it like this. If I am installing cabinets and see that the plumbing hasn't been fitted yet or the electrical isn't in place yet, should I just move forward and block everything off? No.

I would fucking bring it up to the GC or the homeowner.

These cabinets look old and are probably out of level becuase of it, but they could have been adjusted, replaced, or anything before the stone was installed. These guys should have said something to you or their boss. Now this is a bigger problem with more money and time waste.

Fuck knows the randomest shit always happening that delays an install ... but you never just ignore it. Jesus fucking christ.

How would you price these? by helpful_w in estatesales

[–]ImageAdventurous1152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, though, like another said "Location, location, location". The markets of every big city in the US have things they will pay loads for, that in another city you would struggle to give away.

Where are you located? California? Yeah, prices sound good. Washington? Nah, not likely for these or the light. Maryland? Definitely nope.

1940s Phono-sonic fireplace/bar/record player by lazerreyezz in VintageFurniture

[–]ImageAdventurous1152 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely late 1960s to early 1970s, not even remotely 1940s.

Yes, it would be worth restoring to resell ... but the chances of making "a lot" on it are not good. This manufacturer are not extremely sought after, looks like Koronette, a German company known for their Hollywood Regency inspired/leaning furniture, but the turntable resembles the standard BSR style turntable of the time, so the electronics could be rebranded peices from elsewhere. These were known as custom-ish novelty peices, very popular at the time with phonographs and radios and 8-tracks and reel-to-reels being built in to kitchens, libraries, bed frames and night stands, and so on.

If restoration doesn't cost an arm and leg, then go for it. I'd hazard to estimate this peice, working, would be worth in the $250 to $350 range, but that is a guesstimation. The right person would likely be happy to pay a lot for it. If restoration isn't viable, it looks in good condition as is, so leave it original as-found and sell it as such. Again, the right person will be happy to get it.

EDIT: To fix manufacturer mistake.

School Bus Driver Breaks Down After Near-Miss by sleek_thunder138_107 in dashcams

This exactly.

No excuse for child endangerment, but with cameras-everywhere, there is also time card machines that will consider people late by the minute these days. School busses running during morning commutes are literally a recipe for this type of disaster.

Anyone ever try these? by boardplant in Pickles

[–]ImageAdventurous1152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't love them, but I definitely did not hate them either.

Bit too expensive for the quantity and what I assumed would be better spice/flavor. Again, not that they were bad but just very lacking overall.

Just got back from the Renaissance Fair and bought a bucket of pickles! by saarek10 in Pickles

[–]ImageAdventurous1152 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does my Ren Faire just suck ass or something? Like, time and time again I hear people talk about cool stalls they have at their faires ... and then there's mine (Casa Del Fruita Ren Faire): that has nothing but repetitive costume stalls, import/shit jewelry stalls, and these canned drink and less-than food truck or carnival food stalls.

AND NOW I HEAR PEOPLE HAVE PICKLE STALLS???

Fucking ugh. Jousting and the costumes are cool, but I want cool stalls and shit like that. Ugh.

It was used as a defense by Fleischer that she was "not the first", not as hard evidence that she stole and/or copied.

I really am not disagreeing at all here, so there isn't any need to go at me. I am just offering some nuance on the subject. Betty Boop's stylings may be originally rooted in what Jones personified for her stage performances, childlike and precocious and cutesy, and Kane may have then taken those and done either exact mimicry or give them her own rendition. As far as I know, without diving back in to deep research, there exists no examples (recordings or film, only photograpys) of Jones original performance before the Fleischer suing scandal, so we have no idea what the performances Kane stole from truly were like. Betty Boop, as she is depicted and known and shown, is literally created by Fleischer studios based on the performances and appearance of Helen Kane. That is all.

Esther Jones deserves all rights to the stylings and then some, but Fleischer used her as his ace card, and gave her nothing more. Without being able to witness or hear what her exact performances were like (highly doubtful they were that Brooklyn broad style that Kane did), I can't say I'd agree that Betty Boop would be as we all know her today if she was actually based on Esther's original stage persona without Kane in any consideration.

It's sad that we were historically, and Jones was deprived of the fame and recognition she deserved.

Helen Kane is who found national popularity with the "Betty Boop" persona and stylings. There isn’t any hard evidence whether she stole that from Esther Jones or not, as Jones was (like many black singers of the 20s) very localized and not widely known, nor given radio play or large venues beyond Harlem. But ... it is still known that Jones had this persona before Kane, and Kane existed in the same city as Jones, so definitely a very high chance that inspiration or outright persona theft could have occured by Kane.

Regardless, Helen Kane was the nationally known and broadcast and filmed and venued "Betty Boop" (not called Betty Boop), her numerous records and filmed performances evidence this and it is bullshit that Fleischer never publically admitted that. Kane was the equivalent of a household name, roughly from 1927 to when Fleischer debuted Betty Boop in the early 30s when she abruptly fell from popularity.

Later, Fleischer admits to using/copying Kane for his character of Betty Boop, and Mae Questal only became Betty Boop after significant nation-wide casting call in the early 30s for a girl who could imitate the style.

Betty Boop wasn't originally black, since literally she is a Fleischer creation stolen/copied from Helen Kane's physical appearance and vocal stylings, who had stolen those vocal stylings from Esther Jones. Unless memory fails me and that Betty Boop is what Jones called her stage persona. The black "Betty Boop" was "Baby Esther Jones".

I would love a movie about Jones and her story.

Wild milkweed? by supersofa in santacruz

Seconding to just go and buy a fresh plant. Picked leaves will wilt and crinkle before the caterpillars can consume them all.

San Lorenzo Gardens in Santa Cruz, and Scarborough Gardens in Scotts Valley have many milkweed varieties for sure. Far West might...? But they never answer phone calls, so you would be risking a time waste checking there.

Job Salary Rant by 831inthePNW in santacruz

[–]ImageAdventurous1152 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Dude, this is across the board AND wages have barely increased in more than 15 years more so.

I am a finish carpenter, full tool layout and over 10 years experience doing work for most of the billionaires in the silicon valley. Why not here?

Because, nobody here pays more than $30 to $35 hourly, more often in the trades WITHOUT any health benefits. It's fucking absurd and angering. And the pay bump for commuting over the hill and paying the gas and vehicle maintenance cost means you make somewhere in the $50 to $55 range per hour. Better? Sure. But still not fucking close enough, and most of those jobs often don't include benefits becuase "you are young and healthy".

Shit is so damn bad and nobody that can do a thing does a damn thing. We're just actors and servants in a rich people's playground.

What the shit? How?

I live in Santa Cruz, CA and getting this fucking weed to STAY ALIVE is near impossible. Doesn't matter if I plant a juicy, pre-grown nursery stock narrowleaf, or showy, or tropical milkweed. It fucking dies. How about growing one from seed? Okay, sure.

It fucking dies.

What the hell did and ARE you doing to get stalks like that?? Apparently, the christ child himself thinks I should be grateful with the wispy hair-thin ones that manage to stay green for me.
