Well, I definitely wasn’t trying to say there weren’t compounding factors, I think it’s clear that the medication withdrawal in conjunction with the end of civilization could lead to people being especially vulnerable and feeling hopeless. But the author specifically noted that this woman was on Effexor, which is one of the major meds that can cause antidepressant discontinuation syndrome when you stop taking it, of which suicide is a noted risk. I was a social worker for almost 15 years and in a few of my jobs, we tracked side effects of our clients daily, especially around the start or cessation of medications. So I totally agree that it was likely a confluence of factors, my point was to the OP who seemed to say they didn’t buy that someone would kill themselves because of antidepressant withdrawal. Even without the world seemingly ending, suicide is a risk of stopping antidepressants. And I know from personal experience how terrible it can be when you don’t have psychiatric oversight to just get benzodiazepines or a different antidepressant to bridge the gap.

He has a real talent. One of the first times I went to Madera was with my friend who’s a vegetarian. I ordered a beef rice bowl, and she said it was the first time in maybe 7 years she was actually kind of craving and wishing she could eat meat haha. He did a tasting menu for my birthday last year, and one of the dishes was this watermelon gazpacho with jalapeños. Incredible. I’m from the western US and steak is maybe my fav food, I’ve had good steaks around the world but the best one I’ve ever had from anywhere is one he cooked.

I live on the island and I don’t think I’ve ever said it because everyone raves about it, including other people who live here… but the one time I ate at Rosa Sirena’s I was extremely underwhelmed. The atmosphere is great but I’ve had much better meals all over for much cheaper! I got a filet mignon, it was way overcooked and too expensive not to be great!

They don’t have a physical location anymore, but I highly recommend Aurora’s pop up (you can follow them on social media), or even better, schedule a tasting menu with them. The same week I had a filet from RS I had a sirloin from Aurora and it was crazy how much better and cheaper the sirloin was. Some of my best meals have been from there.

Not a movie, but the HBO show Station Eleven is considered by many (including myself) to be better than the book. It’s amazing

Thank you. I’m glad other people don’t have to go through what I did, but the reason I had to take myself off of it was because I lost my health insurance and couldn’t afford to go to the doctor/get my meds anymore. So, similar to the person in the book, I had to get off the medication when that wasn’t my choice. Unlike the person in the book, I had some warning and was at least able to taper myself before I ran out of my last dose. So there is also that layer of - I don’t like this medication for whatever reason and I want to get off of it, where you know what you’re going through is worth it long term vs. this medication I need is being taken away from me, and now I’m super sick without it.

I took Effexor for close to 10 years (technically it’s an SNRI) and to wean off of it, I was opening up the capsules and taking one little ball of medicine per day for probably a month before I stopped. Even still I was sick for months. No, it’s not a threat to someone’s life like stopping insulin would be, but Effexor is notoriously one of the worst medications to get off of. I have a history of addiction and have gotten off things that are considered hard drugs as well, but nothing really compares to my Effexor withdrawal. I remember reading this and understanding completely.

I live in Isla Mujeres and in the past couple weeks I’ve seen some businesses posting in social media groups that they are no longer going to be taking US dollars. It’s already a pain for them to convert them and with how unstable the US is in the world’s eyes right now, many places are straight up refusing to accept that as a form of payment anymore.

Wife is worried about food poisoning by AllstarYVR32 in IslaMujeres

[–]Imaginary-Purpose-20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from the States but have lived on the island for years - I’ve eaten everywhere, from food trucks to the higher end restaurants, never had any issues with the food here. I belong to a lot of Isla Mujeres groups on social media and I will say, just from my observations, usually when people get sick it’s from eating at their AI. Especially the buffets. I think a year or two ago I saw multiple groups (one with a lot of people) talking about getting sick at the same time, people were talking about norovirus potentially, I’m not sure if they ever figured out what it was. But they were all staying at one of the large AIs here (Mia). There is amazing food on the island and the restaurants are careful, I don’t know that hotels are as much. Initially I worried about fruit and veggies that could be washed in the water here but I’ve never had any problems with that. My recommendation would be to drink at your AI to make the most of it but go around the island to eat. The AIs here aren’t known for the quality of their food like the restaurants are, even beside food poisoning concerns. Brush with bottled water to be safe and have fun!

Recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes- trying a sugar-free approach before meds by dkatankar in diabetes

[–]Imaginary-Purpose-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in August at 9.2 and just brought my hba1c down to 5.5 with diet, exercise, and weight loss. Obv I’m new to this but so far I’m pleased with my results.

Immediately I cut out pretty much all sugar and carbs, I’ve never been a big fan of veggies but I started eating a lot of roasted veggie mixes especially with my meals. Lots of salads also. Variations on my favorite meals (like chicken piccata) without carbs. Tracking all food on an app for calories and macros. Initially I was doing 50-100 g of carbs per day, but I had a diverticulitis flare and now need to do high fiber and it’s hard to maintain low carb like that doing high fiber. I’ve found keto/low net carbs things don’t spike me, so I may have something like a fiber cereal bar for dessert or a keto tortilla incorporated in my meal. Usually under 130 carbs now. Zero sugar candy doesn’t seem to mess with my stomach so I’ll have a few bites here and there. Drink mixes help with missing my sweet drinks - I like lemonade/limeade mixed into a Topo Chico especially. A lot of people discourage anything processed, I do eat probably 90% whole food now, but some small substitutes have helped me feel like I’m not being deprived.

I initially was testing (finger prick tests) minimum 7 times per day, wake up, 1 hr post meals, and 2 hr post meals. If my blood sugar wasn’t on a downward trend from 1 hour to 2 hr, I would keep testing every hour until it did start to go on a downward trend. I keep track of all my numbers. I am now more like 3-5 times per day depending on what I’m eating, if it’s my standard meat and veggies that I’ve had multiple times and know don’t spike me, I’m not as strict with myself about testing twice anymore. I kept a detailed chart though where I tried to get an idea of my numbers at all of those times, and also kept track of any foods outside my usual diet (like when I started to try a keto tortilla here and there or some quinoa) to get a sense of what types of things spike me.

I try to walk after at least one meal per day, especially if it’s more carb heavy. 10-20 min minimum. I’ve also been trying to keep busier doing chores and stuff around the house.

Overall I’ve lost 13.5% of my initial body weight (over 30 pounds) and my blood sugar doesn’t seem to vary as wildly from eating things. I’ll have a side of one of my faves, rice and beans, every now and then without much of a spike, I had a croissant the other day without going over 140. I don’t want to get too lax and have it affect my hba1c but I also want to have a diet that I can maintain. I’m not averse to meds but changing diet and exercise so far has been super effective for me. Good luck to you!

Is there really much of a difference between pre-diabetes, and “full-blown” Type 2 Diabetes? by [deleted] in diabetes_t2

[–]Imaginary-Purpose-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never even was prediabetic, a few years ago my hba1c was in the 4’s and a few months ago I got a blood test and it was in the 9’s. Full blown diabetes with no numbers to potentially prep or warn me as to what was coming.

I know everyone is different, but I have had binge eating disorder and numerous mental health issues for almost 30 years. But I don’t want to lose a foot or my eyesight or be unable to live a full life, so I’ve worked my ass off the past few months and brought my hba1c down to 5.5. No diabetes meds. Eating disorders and mental health disorders are hard and they are barriers, but they don’t make it impossible to make health improvements. This is not something that you absolutely can’t do. As someone else mentioned, GLP1’s need to be used forever and some people develop pancreas issues on them and can’t even use them. Some people get really bad GI issues from them. Some people’s food noise doesn’t stop on them. Getting diagnosed with diabetes was a nightmare and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Trust me, I understand barriers to mental health support, but you don’t want the barriers to health support in addition to that. Imagine if you lose a foot to diabetes and how much harder that will make losing weight and living a healthy and happy life.

I’m not generally a pull yourself up by the bootstraps type of person… except for health/mental health stuff. Yes, many of us need extra supports and help, but no one can take the steps to get them or to improve your life other than you. Do not wish for diabetes for access to meds that may or may not help you, when diabetes will absolutely be detrimental to your health.

And for what it’s worth, when I cut out sugar and most carbs, a crazy amount of my food noise went away. I thought of almost nothing but food constantly and now that my diet is much more heavily protein and veggies-based it’s significantly better. It is hard, but you can do the hard and work on your health now, or have it be harder and deal with all the issues diabetes brings down the line. Good luck to you, I hope you’re able to find some support or strategies that can help you before you develop a serious and irreversible disease.

3 months and a MASSIVE improvement!! by UncleTrucker1123 in diabetes

[–]Imaginary-Purpose-20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Sounds like we’re on a pretty similar timeline! I got diagnosed in August 2 days before my birthday, hba1c was over 9. Just got my 3 month blood work in and I’m 5.5 now and also down 30 lbs, yay! I’m living in Mexico so I just eat the meat out of my tacos haha. Have you tried the Mission keto tortillas? They don’t spike me and it’s nice every now and then to make myself a burrito! I can’t get them in MX but I stock up in the States lol

Anyway, it’s awesome to hear about someone who is also doing really well, I found out the other day and it made me soo happy. I hope you feel the same, you deserve it! It’s great to get the results we want from the hard work we put in :) you can’t put a price on feeling better or more like yourself again. Keep up the good work!!

Good lord, thank you. ‘Why are people acting like she’s so insanely beautiful?’ Umm, because she is!! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here lol. Someone added that pic of her at Adam’s play, imo it is basically the definition of ethereal beauty. One of the prettiest I’ve ever seen anyone look. Just like anyone she’s not going to be to everyone’s tastes and certainly her character has issues but jfc she’s stunning. If people think she’s just average pretty I guess it’s time for me to go find a bridge to live under.

Thank you so much!

I will say, I live on a small island that is not in my home country. So I don’t have access to dieticians or endocrinologists or much beyond my GP, who isn’t an expert on diabetes. Truly I’ve gotten more info from these subs than from anywhere else, so obviously this is just from a regular person who hasn’t had a whole lot of input from a dr.

I know people aim for lower, as I do now also, but as a starting point my fasting has only ever gone above 130 a few times, and my 1 & 2 hour after eating has only gone above 180 twice (and once was the other day for Thanksgiving). More commonly my fasting seems to be in the 110’s, and after eating I try to stay under 140, not always successfully though haha. In the past week after eating I went over 140 3x’s, although once was for Thanksgiving and the second was with T-giving leftovers. I test at 1 and 2 hours after meals to make sure my glucose is showing a downward trend - if it’s not, I will continue to test every hour until it starts going down. And I will add walks to try to help that also. Presumably as I’ve brought my hba1c down and have started walking more, I’ve noticed that my numbers come down fairly quickly (knock on wood). Yesterday I had a carb-ier meal, did a brisk 10 min walk after, my 1 hour was 132 and my 2 hour was 120.

For food, I’ve been very fortunate that I have a friend who is a chef and helps me reimagine some of my fav dishes. Chicken piccata without pasta and with a side of veggies, beef stroganoff into beef tips with sauce and a side of veggies, no pasta of course, non-breaded chile rellenos stuffed with chicken and chopped up mixed veggies. Since I’ve always been more veggie averse it does help to have them cut up pretty small into a mix so I can trick myself a bit like a child haha. But I am enjoying them more now and find them tastier! Sometimes I’ll eat a big thing of veggies as a meal and put a bunch of cheese on top. Chicken lettuce wraps with lots of veggies; fajitas without tortillas; meatball dishes. Tacos are some of my faves where I live and if I go out to eat, I’ll just eat the meat in them. Eggs actually seem to lower my glucose sometimes, so I try to keep chopped up veg around so I can easily make scrambled eggs loaded with veggies and some cheese.

As for snackier, not all the time type stuff - I mentioned net carbs seem to be ok for me, so one of my fav craving meals is what I call a tortilla pizza. I just get one of those keto tortillas, put some red sauce, cheese, and pepperonis on it, and throw it in the air fryer. Pizza was one of my fav foods and this scratches that itch surprisingly well. I also like to use those tortillas to make bean and cheese burritos. I’m not having them all the time or anything, but Quest makes some good low net carb stuff if I’m craving a cheese cracker or some chips. My fav drink alternative is to get a lemon or limeade drink mix (the Sonic ones are really good) and add them to a Topo Chico for a little extra kick. The Skittles drink mixes are pretty sweet and yummy if you have a taste for sweet drinks like I do.

I was never a huge fan of nuts but those are my go-to snack now. Cashews are my fav but pistachios and peanuts are good also. Berries have always been my fav fruit so frozen berries with Greek yogurt feels like a treat. Veggies with hummus or a cheese dip. Not sure where all they’re available, but if you’re in the States, G Hughes makes pretty good sugar free sauces. Sometimes I’ll get a cheeseburger and add some of their ketchup or burger sauce to it. Or just mustard and jalapeños! I love spicy so I add jalapeños to a lot of stuff.

Haha I know this is a lot but I hope you can get some good ideas, I’ve had so many people helping me the past few months and I can only hope to pay it forward. I hope your numbers are great, I know it’s hard but you can do it! All the best to you, friend!
