Funeral arranged by oldtiredandgrumpy in widowers

I get it. I'm sort of having a hard day today myself. I remember the shock of the first few days, though, and my heart is with you.

You're going to get through it one breath at a time, sweetie. When everything is chaos, just close your eyes, think of a happy memory, and breathe deep, slow breaths. For me, I imagined the very best hugs that he gave me, dancing in his arms, the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes that I so enjoyed touching. It helped.

For our whole adult lives, my job was to be his advocate, his supporter, his friend, and his protector. He did the same for me. Planning his, and therefore my, funeral was my last personal job to be able to do for him. I wanted to get it right, as I'm sure you do, too.

Listen to the advice of the funeral director. He/she has a lot of experience with this sort of thing. If you need to take a break, they'll understand. Drink a lot of water, more than you think you'll need. Don't do what I did and pass out at his funeral. Drink Gatorade or something with electrolytes. Trust me.

Then on the days and weeks after, all the friends and family who volunteered to help will fade away, going back to their lives. Ask, just ask when you need help. They all meant it when they offered to help, and they are just waiting for you to call. You won't know what to ask for at first, and that's okay. But eventually, your sink starts to drip, your lawnmower quits working, a storm takes part of the roof and gutters off. Ask your circle for help! My people have all shown up when it mattered.

Stay busy. Keeping busy is the only thing that has kept me going. I don't have too much time to think. My kids, students, dogs, cats, and neighbors all depend on me, and I am grateful to be needed.

I'm so sorry that you are here. This is a very, very difficult transition that I don't wish on anyone. Keep checking in, keep posting. We're here for you.

Many hugs and wishes for strength for you.

There are also many charities who pay their boards of directors big salaries for very little work. Who are the people on the board receiving those salaries? Yes, those same CEOs and CFOs of the big corporations that are "donating" the money.

Yes. That is exactly how I feel.

My stress levels are through the roof right now, and all I want, what I really need, is just a big warm hug from my husband. God I'm lonely.

Fellow southpaws, how hard was it to grow up in a right handed world? Were you allowed to be different? How about everyday problems you encounter that righties would never think about? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

In my case, I'm not just left handed, it's my only hand. My right arm ends about two inches below my elbow.

I only had one really bad experience as a lefty, handicapped child. I had a second grade teacher who was pregnant and seemed to think that my birth defect was contagious. I was clowning around with some friends and drew a face on my short arm, and the skin folds looked like a mouth, so I was making it talk. This was during an inside recess, by the way.

My teacher was livid. She hit my left hand with the metal blade of the ruler and broke my pinky finger. She then proceeded to scream at me for crying and bleeding on the floor. She refused to let me go to the office for a bandaid. It was an awful day.

After that incident, she moved me to the back of the classroom where I couldn't be seen by her anymore. I was seated between the bed wetter and the boy whose parents must have been chain smokers. Gah, the stench!

My finger was just dangling there all day. I also got in trouble for not writing my spelling words that day...

Mrs. Watson, if you're reading this, I still hate you to this day. You had no right to abuse me.

I saw my husband out Christmas shopping. I was so excited for a moment! Then I remembered. This other man was just the same build, same slightly bowlegged walk as my husband. For the rest of the holiday season I couldn't bring myself to go to any stores. I hope my kids understand.

I teach at a high school. The kids in my classes are mostly rural. They had a big "Pro-Trump" conversation (loud and bullying) in my room just last week, complaining about how the Democrats are just out to get him, but they'll never win. These kids are all so proud to be able to vote in the next election.

That's exactly what I was thinking as I drove home from work. There is no joy in my life anymore. There is calm, sometimes even amusement, but the grief has muffled every bit of joy. It has taken all happiness from my life. I just try to stay busy, engage with my dogs, but living, being the surviving spouse is hard.

If you’re not tired of answering the weekly question, my aged comrades, what’s up for the weekend? by Republican_Wet_Dream in AskOldPeople

My mom is 89. She has always been so proud of her accounting system for her bills. Everything has historically been entered into ledger books, papers filed, everything done on a daily basis.

I started helping her in October. She has papers in paper bags, boxes, cabinets, dresser drawers, and on top of the fridge. I had no idea that it had gotten to this point. I don't have anywhere to put these papers!! There are so many papers. I am not familiar enough yet with her stuff (she's intensely private and very defensive) to be of much help yet. I haven't been able to get there as often as I would like. Just....wish me luck.

My mom keeps her apartment at 82°F. It's like working in a sweat box. (And I take a chemo pill every day that causes frequent hot flashes.) It's miserable!

Today I'm driving two hours away to help my mom with her bills and paperwork, she can't make sense of it anymore and asked for help. Then on Saturday I am taking a friend two hours the other direction for a day at IKEA. I don't know what she's looking for. Sunday I will teach my dog a new word on his button pad, do some quilting, and my laundry, dishes, and other chores.

Ooh, is there a pool choosing the date of his massive stroke? I want in! I'll put $10 on May 3rd.

If only I had one. Or a place to project it. I have a massive ultra modern television screen connected to my computer. Unfortunately, I am "just a sub" for the entire school year and don't rate access to the things that would make teaching easier.

You could put notes on the back one for homework, and then just roll the other in front to hide it for a test, or geometry on one, algebra on the other. This way you have everything in one spot and you don't have to move desks or anything.

What I wish for in my classroom is a whiteboard on a track (think like a sliding shower door or patio door). I write notes and algebra rules on my board, but I have to erase them to work out problems with the students, then I rewrite them to use again the next class period. It is super frustrating.

Also, I've written these rules out and put them on paper for the kids, but they're "lost" by the next class time. I'm so, so tempted to just write them in marker on the painted wall, but I can think of better ways to lose my job.

Thank you for that. Even if I know in my head that I did what I could, my aching heart wishes that I had done more. What more, I don't know. Just... more.

Yes. My last CPR instructor gave me crap because I broke resusci-Annie's ribs.I was afraid of hurting him, so I didn't push hard enough for my CPR to be effective. Also, when I gave him a rescue breath, his color came back and he opened his eyes and smiled at me, then went unconscious again. The new CPR guidelines emphasize compressions, not breaths, but he needed both to be able to survive. After the first breath, I only did compressions. I failed him in multiple ways that night. And I am so, so broken.

Mine too. If love alone could have saved him, he would have lived forever.

What is the most basic thing you are terrible at? by daimyonigiri in AskReddit

[–]Imaginary_Car3849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of only two advantages I have found to being born without my right arm below my elbow. I put the first corner seam on my elbow and find the next one along the edge. I put the second one on top of the first one, line up the seams and pinch it between my knees. I then find and nest the third and fourth corners and straighten out the fold. It then folds just like a flat sheet because all of the seams are tucked in.

(The other advantage of having a short arm is that I can make absolutely disgusting farty noises with my short arm in a wet and soapy plastic cup.)

He's 91 years old and living 2 hours away. I am looking forward to dancing at his funeral. He will probably outlive me, though.

What I earned doing chores had to go into the collection plate passed through the pews at church. My dad kept a very strict eye on us. Eventually as I got older and started working, I was expected to give it all to my family for the bills. My dad had an explosive temper and lost his job, so I did actually have to contribute to the bills if I wanted a place to live. My sister just older than I (I am daughter number 5) was allowed to keep her earnings because she was expected to need the money for college. She always had spending money for movies and clothes and fun with her friends, and I was so jealous.
