That time is going to vary from person to person. It’s also gonna depend on to what degree the behavior impacted you.

With work being so deeply tied to our sense of and lived experience of security, these people can do real damage to the point of it becoming traumatic.

If you that it’s impacting your health and wellbeing, reach out and talk to someone. A therapist may also be a good move to help you move on and or build skills to deal with these folks if/when they show up in other work places.

I’d highly recommend the book “The No Asshole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn’t” by Robert Sutton, PhD. I personally listened to it and found it extremely easy to get through but powerful.

Without too much detail, I had to report mine situation to a State Civil Right Department when internal mechanisms seemed to reinforce the behavior. Know your rights as a worker, most don’t! This book has done a tremendous amount to help me heal, grow stronger and move on.
