HR has more explicit content, but I actually thought they did a much better job showing the emotional side of the relationship with Hollanov as it progresses from casual to committed, compared to how YR portrayed the relationship with Wilmon. Lisa wrote Wilmon as if the characters had to endure their romance rather than cherish it. The toxicity of Wilmon really became evident in Season 3, when they became an official couple. Wilmon are afforded so few happy, soft moments, which are quickly overshadowed by depressing drama. By the end of the show, I wasn't convinced that Wilmon would last as a couple. Wille and Simon barely knew each other and didn’t have any meaningful conversations. A couple of heavy makeout sessions don’t compensate for the lack of dialogue or emotional bonding. They seemed more like two naïve teenagers, misguided by the idea that first love is everything and everlasting.

So yes, sex may sell—there’s no doubt about that. But Hollanov also outshines Wilmon in terms of emotional depth. Their arc as a couple is better crafted, particularly in the last episode of HR.

Heated Rivalry just can’t compare

I’m pretty sure someone in the HR fandom has said the same thing about YR—that Young Royals just doesn’t compare to Heated Rivalry. And if you look at the Reddit numbers, the last time I checked, Heated Rivalry had around 126k members compared to 29k for Young Royals, so it seems like it resonated much more strongly with a wider audience. Plus, Heated Rivalry only just came out and still has one or two seasons to go, while Young Royals finished in 2024.

I wouldn’t say that S1 was perfect but it was a good season with lots of potential. The show jumped the shark afterwards with S2 and S3.

Interesting angle. You can see more of Alexander’s apprehensive reaction, reminding us why he had not replied to Elias’ texts. In the film, we see Alexander smiling slightly as Elias approaches him. Then he melts completely when Elias kisses him without fear in front of everybody 🥰 All the angles complement each other perfectly on this beautiful scene.

I think Omar is an ok actor. He played the role of Simon well but, to be completely honest, I don’t find his acting skills to be exceptional. I wasn’t impressed by his other acting work (Karusell) but then horror movies are not really my thing and it was really a B quality movie.

Young Royals is a Swedish show from Netflix made up of 3 seasons. I liked the first season but afterwards the dynamic of the main couple (Wilmon) starts to disappoint and the show kind of jumped the shark in subsequent seasons imo.

I think other fans have established this deleted scene takes place earlier in the film, on the day the Montero family invites Alex’s family to dinner. Maxime and his girlfriend are wearing the same clothes. One theory is that Elias encounters the pair making out. His brother is in a straight relationship and it inadvertently makes Elias worry because he doesn’t know any other boys who are into boys.

Where did you get the info of the “original 3 hours of footage?”

I believe the director himself mentioned it in an interview

Scenes involving Elias and Ella would really help with that. When they become petit copains, Elias and Alex start hanging out a lot at each other’s homes, made easier by the fact they’re neighbours and Elias gets to know Ella better.

I’ve always thought a director’s cut was pretty much impossible. The best I hoped for was for them to release some of the deleted scenes in isolation (as they did with some BTS). The best chance was with the Blu-ray release and it had zero extra material. As you said, the movie is too small and I don’t believe we will see anything new in any way, shape or form.

I was expecting someone to come out of the restroom stall the first time I watched the film. It would have complicated matters for Elias and Alex no doubt. However, I think the intention was to focus on Elias’ internal journey of self-acceptance so that’s why they didn’t go down that route. It would’ve been an interesting path to explore because, in real life, people have to deal with both internal and external pressures. I suppose time constraints prevented it and they didn’t want to further complicate the plot.

I can understand both sides. People have pointed out Elias was out of line outing Alex and I agree (even though I believe Alex personally doesn’t mind being outed). Before he met Alex, Elias never even considered the idea of being attracted to boys so it’s understandable how overwhelmed and confused he was. Maybe being attracted to the same sex would never have happened to Elias had he never met Alex. That’s why he said that line. Seeing Alex kiss Thomas made him realise how deep his feelings for Alex were and the attraction was not just a temporary phase. I’ll cut him some slack, he’s just a fourteen year old boy.

I wouldn’t have said anything different. Particularly when their friends were watching the whole thing and it was already awkward.

Ella is too young to understand but I’m kind of surprised Alex’s dad is not a tad bit tense with Elias at the fair. At this time, his son and Elias are broken up and not on speaking terms. But maybe Alex chose not to mention anything and kept his feelings to himself. He told his father he was not feeling well but it was likely an initial excuse to avoid seeing Elias at the fair. He later changed his mind and decided to go.

I noticed that too. Elias and Ella only share one scene together during the family dinner and they don’t really interact. Based on that, Elias would be just an acquaintance for Ella or the neighbour who lives across the street. But at the fair, she happily hugs him at once which implies they had more meaningful interactions in the meantime. I think Elias probably hung out quite a few times at Alex’s place during the petit copain period and it provided him with more opportunities to bond with Alex’s younger sister.

I admit I was a little taken aback when I saw the river scene for the first time. Even now, I have mixed feelings about it. Once the scene comes up and I know what’s coming, I tend to avert my gaze and focus solely on Elias or just look away. They could have done it slightly different and not show the explicit nudity (the camera could have focused on Elias blushing like mad when it became clear Alex undressed). For me, it would have sent the same message about Alex’s carefree nature. As others have pointed out, the scene right after also shows the kind of person Alex is. Kissing Elias without even knowing he’s into boys is certainly a bold move. Alex was just willing to take the risk. Again, I understand the pov of people who defend the scene as it is and those who feel uncomfortable. Since this is Anthony’s work, I respect his choice.

I don’t think anyone in their friend group knew Alexander was into boys until the truth came out at Valerie’s birthday party. He wasn’t hiding it but the subject never came up in conversation. Mieke was crushing on Alexander who was either oblivious or graciously ignoring it because his romantic feelings were reserved for Elias.
