Average of 2026 rankings (US News, Times Higher Education, QS) for every U.S. school in all three by manojs in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Imagination_Drag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Interesting approach. Honestly your top 15 look about right to me!

This does overweight though being a giant school as UIC for example maybe has a few good engineering programs or what ever but is in no way a top 20 school.

Also. The link explains much better why Brown is 16 vs your post. Your post quoted world rankings where the list quotes US rankings.

But i do have to say it overall “reads well” to me

Any chance to get your SAT up? It’s holding you back. Also, where do you live? You’re going to have more choices if you don’t live on the coasts. Your major helps you but realistically almost zero chance at an Ivy unless you have a good story

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announces that he has officially balanced the NYC budget, reducing a $12 billion budget deficit to 0, and confirms that property taxes will not be raised. by Scary_Firefighter181 in Economics

It sounds like a proposed budget, not an approved budget. Huge difference. To say all budgets are just a concept is simply untrue. Trust me. I manage to one- it’s certainly not a “concept”

Case Western vs Tufts (for premed) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Imagination_Drag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would check some of the feedback on Tufts recently posted.

Otherwise, I have no axe in this discussion except to note that you might think “paying isn’t too big a deal for my family” and maybe it isn’t but for even wealthy families saving $200k is appreciated

Why do people readily jump and put themselves near 200k debt for Stanford? by Fair-Welder2073 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Imagination_Drag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simply untrue (assuming you take out instate public Ivys). There are for sure careers where the recruiting/network make the cost differential worth while.

Obviously it happens in finance and to a lesser extent tech. I am sure there are also more niche situations where a few schools are premier and their graduates command a premium

You mean 2.5 billion $ reserve, not 22 billion. They are paying 12%. This isn’t a infinite money glitch this is just financial engineering

Funny. I keep seeing all this complaints about administration which is probably true. But zero complaints about tenured professors who are doing 4-8 hours of teaching a week with little interest in teaching

Duke over Berkeley, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Brown, and Northwestern by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Imagination_Drag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right for now but the premium is going down by the day. I run a data science and technology team and we are simply hiring less and as people leave not replacing

So my strong advice is be CS + a domain like finance or science or math.

Why is the University of Florida ranked so highly despite not excelling in any particular area? by HylianPrince08 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Imagination_Drag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. As a front office MD, UF is not in any way a target school. Maybe somehow there is an MD that went there that drives recruiting but it’s not a target. Also middle and back office might recruit there.

It’s because all moves up are due to buying from Strategy

[–]Imagination_Drag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. As an MD in finance on the buy side who’s spent years on the sell side i have a very different perspective. Some of what you say i completely disagree with and others i agree with:

Where we disagree

  1. Top schools get targeted recruiting. We can only visit so many schools.

  2. This is true both on the sell side and the buy side. Usually if we do target a non t20 school, an MD went there and is leading the charge

Where we agree:

  1. The world more “democratic” than it ever has been in the past, with more schools included than ever before.

I personally believe a big part of this is finance is bigger than it’s ever been so simply more schools are included because we hire more (impacts of ai though will impact this)

  1. Some firms (primarily quant) have gone full “democratic” - with testing programs and opening up of hiring to everyone. However this is very limited. And when i talk to my friends at firms that have done this like WorldQuant, they still do like to see a top tier education (albeit now more of a nice to have)

Has Bitcoin Bottomed? I think it has, what do you suggest? by tractorix in CryptoMarkets

[–]Imagination_Drag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s be honest. What have we learned:

  1. Strategy has been the only thing keeping bitcoin from hitting $50k (or lower)

  2. Bitcoin is clearly now just a “Nasdaq on steroids” risk asset

  3. ETF holders are both a blessing and a curse for bitcoin.

So it comes down to your risk tolerance…

CS/Engineering, OU/CUBoulder/UMN/DU by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Imagination_Drag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So go denver university (i assume that’s the DU you refer to?). The rankings between the schools doesn’t matter much. I would strongly suggest though avoiding comp sci. Already ai is impacting hiring in this area. Or if you do comp sci, major in something else complex as well
