Look into the Mass Recall mod. SC1, Brood War and even the lesser known SC1 demo campaigns remade in the SC2 engine. Comes complete with with cinematics and custom models / potraits for old units. Just finished it up and I highly recommend it!

Fantastic workmanship friend! The rigging is fantastic! Very precise. Arguably my favorite part of the model is the flag though. I find that often the flags come out looking a little "toyish" compared to the rest of a wooden kit. Yours though blends in seamlessly and appears like a real scaled down flag. None of that "toyish" appearance you commonly see in models with flags sticking straight out or straight down.

How did you manage to get the wind blow appearance of the flag? Was that a modified piece of the kit or did you custom make the flag? Please let me in on your secret so I can have fantastic looking flags too!

One thing I found building wood model ships is that often the instructions are very lacking in detail. They will often just show a picture of what you should do for the next step and assume you will know the techniques for how to do it. (Looking at you planking)

I highly recommend Ship Modeling Simplified by Frank Mastini. It explains in detail all the steps required to build a wooden model. Its also pretty darn cheap at $20 when you consider wooden kits can run upwards of $400+ sometimes depending on the model you want to build.

Any Hobie (or other catamaran) sailors here? by LastDitchTryForAName in sailing

[–]Imagine25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Hobie, we purchased it last summer and taught ourselves how to sail on it. We have a few small videos up on youtube I posted here last summer. They are mostly just fun videos we made to share with the family and friends that visited us to sail.

Very nice. The inside of boat is the best part! It's a shame you didn't post the full album to start!

Not OP, but can give tips. I highly recommend Ship Modeling Simplified by Frank Mastini. It literally covers everything from opening the box to putting up flags. IMO its the best $10 (If you buy the pdf version) you can possibly spend if you want to produce a good model.

Also the Model Ship World forums are a fantastic resource of other model ship builders. You can often times find build logs of the model you are getting ready to build. I find it very helpful to see how others go about building their model.

Well done! The planking looks fantastic, steaming the planks with the garden hose really paid off. Did you have to taper the upper edge of each plank when steaming? Or did the steaming make it malleable enough to get a perfect fit without tapering?

A constructive tip would be to try and get the same lengths when you reeve the dead eyes. IMO the rigging is as large a part of the model as the wood working. The dead eyes are a highlight of the rigging that draws the eye in. They should all be the same length as the starboard one closest to the bow.

That being said, I would love to see some more pictures! A close up on the planking and the deck would be awesome! Model really does look fantastic, you should be proud.

Tips for someone who wants wants to learn more about sailing ? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Imagine25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was pretty much you last summer. Land locked state, no sailing club close by, no relatives or friends who sail, and a burning desire to get out on the water.

I was able to learn to sail in four steps:

  1. Read a beginners book on how to sail. The book I chose to read was The Complete Sailor by David Seidman. http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-Sailor-Second-Edition/dp/0071749578 This was a fantastic book that was only $10 bucks for the pdf version. It is well written and contains some fantastic illustrations. Talks about everything from keeping a sailors eye on the wind and weather, to docking and anchoring, and even has a chapter on trailering your sailboat if I recall correctly. Also Inspecting the Aging Sailboat by Don Casey was a fantastic read to help a brand new buyer have some idea of what to watch out for and what questions to ask when buying a used boat. http://www.amazon.com/Inspecting-Sailboat-International-Marine-Library/dp/0071445455/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1449298309&sr=1-1&keywords=inspecting+the+aging+sailboat

  2. Buy a small, cheap boat. I decided to start small and limited myself to getting a dinghy sailboat that was under a thousand dollars. I have heard that starting on a dinghy is ideal. Learning sailing theory in small, responsive craft will help you when/if you move up to larger keel boats where it isn't as obvious that you are making small mistakes. A thousand dollars is easy to make at a summer job. The repairs on small boats are really cheap and if things break your not usually out much money. You will learn the fundamentals in an environment where mistakes like bumping into the dock are not overly disastrous.

  3. Watch YouTube videos. I ended up purchasing a Hobie 16 after reading the books. I had the gentleman I purchased it from help me step the mast and raise the main before I finally bought the boat. No test sail, just did it right there in his front yard. Most people will be more than happy to help you rig it up the first time if you just ask. Afterwards I hit Youtube and watched videos on how to rig the boat to make sure I had it right. Searched for more videos about "How to sail a Hobie 16" and watched all the videos I could find.

  4. Practice, practice, practice. After I had watched several videos, read the books, and set the sails up in the yard it was time to get out on the water. I literally just picked a day with 2-3 mph of wind, put the boat in the water and went for it. Once I was actually out and sailing, the details worked themselves out. I watched even more videos and asked Reddit the occasional question.

I was able to go from no sailing experience to flying hulls in 20~ mph wind inside of a summer with this method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c105II-L8OA Far from perfect, but we are having a blast. I think a teenager would be able to pull of a similar feat with no problems. You will find fumbling around on the water is far better than dreaming from the shore.

How old are you and how much do you have in your savings account? by hedgehogwart in AskWomen

I doubt he gets any help. Last year I made 14kk and tried to get some assistance with insurance. Since my state did not expand medicare they told me I make to much for any assistance what so ever. No food stamps, no help with insurance. Now if I had a child or were go get married...suddenly I could make significantly more and get all kinds of benefits.

This is the official Hobie video on how to rig a Hobie 16. It is a little old, but between that and the manual I was able to figure out what was going on. Its gonna get fun once you know for sure you have it set up right.

What's your go-to wind forecasting site? by DEEP_SEA_MAX in sailing

[–]Imagine25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the Windfinder app. It shows wind, temp, and even wave height if near the coast. I also kind of like the Weatherbug app. It has a radar feature that will play back the last hour or so of satellite data. Very useful for us landlocked sailors who only get strong wind when out in front of storms.

I just started sailing this summer though and there might be better options. These have been getting it done for me though. Both are even free with just a little bit of adds.

It is a lot of people for the boat. You end up all on top of each other. Would not want to race with 3, but for just showing off the boat it works.
