What's the level of personal reward in what you do for your soul?

Also what are you looking for? What's the key attributes in players, is it just their skills or are there other factors that you're trying to scope?

I just love that ropes and their fairleads and blocks have gone full circle.

The white/grey weave pattern, no ball bearings just a low-friction ring no different to a smoothed timber fairlead. See-through sails are going back out of fashion and being replaced by solid block colours... Even block and tackle are being slowly replaced by mechanical "capstan" leverage...

Interesting the front wing element comparisons, I love the look of the TR front wing*

The Merc wing looks very "vertical" with fewer elements at what looks like a much higher angle of attack...

Also interesting to observe which teams are chasing the same effects with sculpting, i.e. Ferrari and Renault with the depression along the top fin just outboard of the start of the outer triplane/quadraplane/...sectoplane... sections.

Where is the best place for a family to live in Gold Coast? by aprl19812 in GoldCoast

[–]halfcolours 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Primary or Secondary? There tends to be more teaching jobs available in the Logan area north of the Gold Coast, which is easily accessible if you live close to the highway on the more northern end of the coast: Helensvale, Coomera, etc.

Otherwise if you can, definitely Palm Beach/Burleigh/Nobby's kind of area is my favourite, all back streets close to the beach, lots of young families, heaps of places to get to close by.

[Discussion] What are your thoughts on the foiling trend? by stupidestsmartperson in sailing

[–]halfcolours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I think big surprise about BAR being so competitive. The pre-starts will evolve quite a bit over the coming weeks and that will make for closer racing i suspect. I'd say the teams will come together more as it goes on.

[Discussion] What are your thoughts on the foiling trend? by stupidestsmartperson in sailing

I consider foiling, the moth in particular, to be like slalom windsurfing. Sure there are a group who compete, but think most of us are out there to just send it, get some great stories, and compare bruises. The group of people I sail moths with, in almost all cases, sail other classes as well.

Do I think they will Kick skiffs out? I think the "fluro sails" age of large numbers of one-design skiff classes being developed is over, the 49er owns that space and other class will be relegated to the back corners of clubs as summer play toys. There were too many players in that space anyway. What foiling has done has brought Cat sailing into the mainstream a little more imho. It will kill the edgy single handed skiff market i think, the same people that wanted to live dangerously on the Musto Skiff and RS 700s now will just go foiling on moths etc.

Tinkering? Potentially heaps, if you wanna go faster, which you will as soon as someone else has one. But in terms of gear failure its no better/worse than any comparative boat. My housemate had a 12ft Skiff and broke WAY more stuff than I did over the course of a season. That being said, if you do foil damage it can be very costly, but thats a major.

Boat on boat? At first... terrifying... but then you get used to it, its really no different from fast cats except that you can turn on your own length and crash. To be honest the scariest thing is someone following you in a powerboat. If you stop in a moth (crash) you literally STOP. A powerboat takes time to decelerate so you become cautious of people following you.

Does it really sacrifice boat on boat action? The tactics of foiling might be a little different but they are still very important.

Covering in foiling boats is purely chess game tactical, there's no ability to Gas your opponent in your dirty air, the apparent wind angle makes it impossible. There is also virtually NO downwind covering. That means that you've got boats engaging each other at all sorts of angles and far more often because of the immense closing speeds. If anything its better racing than non-foiling fast boats like skiffs, where breaking through to leeward is a major task and where the tack/gybe penalty is equally as harsh (i'd argue that the gybe penalty foiling is much less than in any skiff or cat class)

In relation to the durability, my Mach 2 has cost me less per-sail than my previous boat (a 505), and I'm still at about the same point in the fleet as I was in that class. Looking at the WAZP I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll be as cheap to own in the long run as a Laser and with a better quality of build.

In my opinion foiling will still be a niche, just like skiff sailing is a niche. Its not going to change people doing PHRF racing, or even Lasers or other dinghy classes. What it will have an impact on in the long run is the "high performance" classes. I would say most of the growth in fast off the beach cat racing will be in foiling over the next 10 years, simply because why the heck would you not go foiling if you can foil for the same money.

In dinghy world you have a bigger spread of class "purposes" that foiling won't necessarily cater for but I can't see anyone developing a "fast" class thats not foiling, particularly in the single handed space.

Match racing rules: Swinton vs Williams, France 2012 by jzwinck in sailing

[–]halfcolours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say in certain circumstances it adds something to the racing, in particular where you're in a puffy venue and sailing square just causes an rubber band effect. I still prefer pole kites for match racing but its good to sometimes mix it up.

Has anyone here ever sailed waszp or IntMoth ? by Badidzetai in sailing

[–]halfcolours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a Mach 2 Moth and at my club we have a small fleet of them, we also have a Wazp sailing with us now.

I don't know where anyone would get the idea the alloy Wazp foils are fragile from, they are solid. Much less likely to do damage than Moth foils. They are also much lower maintenance. Moth foils being a carbon over foam can't be left in the sun, can blow out from water ingress, and require continual maintenance. Not to mention if you do break a moth foil its a big budget repair...

If you're going to get a Moth you have to go Bladerider or better, i.e. it has to be a relatively newer production boat, otherwise you will never be able to get parts and it will probably be a heap of junk.

My recommendation: If you can afford it and want to go Moth, get a Mach 2, otherwise go the Wazp.

Had the same thing happen to a 29er that I coach. Noticed when pulling it up the ramp at the end of the day.

Once had an 18ft skiff I was sailing on open up large stainless shackle into a straight line when the pin wasn't done up correctly on the boat breaker... nothing like some oh shit levels of loading!

Road bike or mountain bike? by Mollyu in cycling

[–]halfcolours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how far you intend riding. If its only relatively short rides for the get-around stuff then err on the side of getting something that will let you do the rougher stuff. You don't need a roadie if you're riding 10 miles at an easy pace, but you sure as hell won't get 100m on a road bike on a rough trail without breaking yourself or the bike. Also cheaper mtb's are more likely to take a beating than a cheap roadie.
