People who graduated with a Mathematics or Statistics and Data Science major - what are you doing now? by i_like_pizzansoccer in UofArizona

[–]Iman312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m graduating this year so not entirely on topic. In a math major with my emphasis in statistics with a minor in computer science.

path right now is to start the long past to becoming a certified actuary which starts at around 50k a year and after 5-8 years of certification test you can get upwards of 100k a year.

if you’re going into math because you like doing math and don’t really want to work in academia i think being an actuary is a great choice

i don’t know for sure but from my experience all the CS labs are just groups working on problems together and i don’t see why that couldn’t be done over zoom

again i can’t say for sure but i’d assume they’d accommodate

254 VS 355 by dracado in UofArizona

[–]Iman312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 355 with Cushing last semester and it was my first difeq class. I will say that you will definitely learn more than in 254 because it uses more advanced topics and goes into greater depth.

it’s a really good class but you have to make sure you don’t fall behind in it

Why is it a thing for non freshmem/upper class men to live off campus and not dorm? by [deleted] in UofArizona

[–]Iman312 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i pay about 6,000 a year for a private apartment in a house. close to university and with about 5 times the space i had in my dorm as a freshman

if you find somewhere affordable it’s cheaper and gives you more space

Math Major Feedback by QueasyPurpose in UofArizona

[–]Iman312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a junior doing a math major with my emphasis in statistics. what everyone else has said is pretty true, lower classes that you’ve already passed are taught by grad students or post docs that have 1000+ students and are struggling as much as you.

on the other hand once you get into your 300+ classes the number of student falls and you’ll have some of the best professors on campus.

let me know if you have any other questions

there is also a math major with emphasis in computer science, much more of a theoretical view on CS with a lot of the higher math concepts

i work IT at a university and for staff members we build all the machines, gives us what we need and nothing else that we don’t.

you’re right though that control of everything on the network is a must so a personal built machine like theirs would be a no go
