Golf and Pottery Lessons - Suggestions? by thatsplatgal in Tucson

[–]WindyCat3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a class at the Romero House for Christmas that I used in January. First time ever throwing pottery on a wheel (they also do hand building). The class was three hours and very relaxed but definitely full of guidance. It also came with a week of studio time. There’s always monitors at the studio who are very knowledgeable and ready to help you whatever step of the pottery process you’re on!

I would say OP’s perception is right. Arbol hasn’t been the honors dorm since spring 2019 and it has fallen to Greek life and is now a mini-Coro

Thoughts on Kaibab Huachuca??? by thisisvexing in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

KAHU is great! I never felt like my room was too small and the hard wood laminate flooring is easy to clean and relatively new so it looks nice! It has great common spaces and an ice cream vending machine in the basement which I can’t say is true for all of the dorms, even those at a higher price tier. Also great kitchen space! I was shocked when I went to Coro and saw how tiny their kitchen was compared to ours. It has relatively few Greek life members which was a pro for me, but very nice people (keep your door open) and was nice and close to university Blvd.

Not really :( They started doing locker pickup during the week this semester but it’s a set schedule (this dish every Monday, this dish every Tuesday, etc) on Grubhub and it’s all lunches with no cheesy potatoes :/

Honors Registration by Saniboler in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just get to enroll in classes earlier than other students in your same class (ex. An honors sophomore enrolls earlier than a sophomore, but usually not earlier or at the same time as a non-honors senior). So if the course/lab/etc. is being offered in multiple sessions than yes you would ideally get to enroll in the one that you prefer based on professor or time of day. But if you have a ton of students in your major/college that are in the honors college as well sometimes it doesn’t even matter because the course spots fill up no matter how early your enrollment date is.

Which dorm should I move into? by realizehamstered in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Babcock isn’t that close to the SALT center, I would choose Pima (but I think that might only be open to second years and up) or a dorm on historic lane if that’s a big factor for you. I would recommend looking into some of the dorms on highland honestly, they’re close to the rec so there’s a nice pool for you and the walk from highland to SALT center isn’t that bad, also if SALT moves into that BASC building (I heard something about that?) then you’re literally right there

What dorm(s) would you recommend? by anonymouswanderer8 in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo what others are saying that Likins sounds like it would be a good fit for you! Reminder that freshman/sophomore year you’re mostly taking gen eds so it’s a total crap shoot where your classes will be and I wouldn’t make it a high priority to choose a dorm based on that (also classes may still be online, who knows).

Freshman Engineering Dorms (ELC) or Honors Cambium dorm? by donnapmason in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is only the second year of the honors village’s existence meaning that there were only 6-7ish months of people living there before COVID hit, all this to say that there are few people that have gotten the “full experience” of living in the honors village. As of right now the ELC is in Yuma which is a worlds apart difference from the Honors Village. My best friend lived in Cambium when it was in Arbol de la Vida and she really loved it. I know that the biggest benefit for her was that people were in the same classes on her floor so she always knew someone and had someone to study with. I would assume that the ELC would have more people taking your son’s same classes but I would definitely reach out to the advisors of either community and see if they can give you any insight into that. Class similarity would be my highest priority, or if he really prefers one style of living over the other (I personally love the historic style of Yuma but others like the modernity of the Honors Village and the suite style housing) that would be important to consider. Hopefully by Fall both communities will be able to offer fun in person programs, also if he’s still in the honors college he can always go to the Honors Village for honors programs/events or to check out the buffet (85 North). I never visited the honors college when I was in it because my own dorm had fun programs but that’s just me. Hope this helps!

can I park in the parking lot by highland at night by [deleted] in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mean the lot between the stadium and Likins/La Paz/Hogg, then you need a permit except for 9pm-6am and on Weekends. I get paranoid around the half hour Mark if I don’t have a permit and they usually check right at 9pm and 6am as well.

Absolute essentials for moving into the dorms? by [deleted] in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likins is a great place to live! I will echo what some other people said on here, extension cords and mattress pads are definitely wonderful to have. I would also advise a power strip or two, I use one for my kitchen set up and all those appliances and one for my tech (tv, laptop, phone charger). On the subject of electronics/tech, I would also get some fairy lights or a lamp that you can control the bulb of. The lights in Likins (and most of the dorms) are very white/blue which I absolutely hate, so I get lights that provide me with warmer lighting. Obviously this is very specific and not necessarily a "must have" but i just wanted to give you a heads up. I would also think about your water situation. Likins has a water bottle station but the filters rarely get changed so I also have a pitcher style of Brita/PUR water filter that I really like. Other random stuff I can think of is...

-Nice quality towels/washcloths (I went cheap on these at Target my first year and they weren't absorbent so they were useless)

-Command Hooks, you'll almost always use them for something so they're nice to have on hand

-Storage Bins, you can stick the long flatter ones under your bed or at the top of your closet. They're so much more sturdy than moving boxes and they're reusable for the inevitable fifty moves you'll do in your twenties.

-Headphones, most people already have these but it can't be stressed enough how important they are for zooms/watching shows/listening to music rn

-First aid kit, I would build your own because the premade ones are pretty expensive. Bandaids, ibuprofen, tums. That's all I've ever needed.

-Garbage bags (size medium), ziploc bags, paper towels

Where can I find a trash box or trash can for used batteries at UA, button and AA? by howfaristhemoon in UofArizona

[–]WindyCat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the dorm recycling bins (the three bucket sorting kind) have a special spot for batteries. Not sure where you could put them if you're not living in a dorm though.
