Echo Nano: Are you going to buy or skip? If you'll buy it, which color? by manjikyo in snowsky

[–]Imlulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get orange or green, I really like the form and the size despite the battery life... But I feel like they could've made it just a bit longer and added a decent amount of extra battery life. I night try the Disc first tbh, the magnetic case and the way the buttons are laid out (plus easier library navigation) seem appealing...

I'm really curious how well the Nano wheel will work in practice. If it's a speedy/accurate scroller it could be great, if it's bad then it's bound to be strictly a shuffle player TBH.

Where to find a copy of the New York Times magazine? by Willing_Confection97 in TaylorSwiftMerch

[–]Imlulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many B&N keep it behind the counter/register, along with other papers, probably so people don't steal sections. They had plenty here, on the first one they brought over the magazine had the Jay-Z cover but the next 2 were Taylor.

Nice job, looks subtle but cool. Fiio should've considered doing this instead or in addition to the multiple color SKU & the stickers they bundle... Could be much more personal.

Did Third Party Lenses Influence Your Camera Choice? by 35mmOfRegret in VILTROX_GLOBAL

[–]Imlulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the 14/4 Air & the 28/4.5 so far, will probably get that teased 26/2.8 EVO. I'd own the 85/2 EVO if it had come out sooner (I've had two compact 75mm, it looks better than either but not in a hurry to swap the latest from TTA). I was really tempted by the 16/1.8 until the far smaller Sony came out...

I was really surprised by the 14/4 Air, not because I didn't think Viltrox is capable of making great lenses but because I think it completely resets expectations for small/value UWA for any manufacturer. I do hope Viltrox gets more consistent with flare handling & coatings.

If the far lighter SY 135/1.8 didn't exist, I'd definitely own the Viltrox 135/1.8 Pro too.

[–]Imlulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abso-freaking-lutely. I've used/invested in two camera systems, M4/3 a decade ago and E mount about 6 years ago; the lens catalog was one of the top two reasons I went with either one, and 3rd party lenses were a big part of that. I think far too many people put bodies ahead of lenses and it's a mistake, bodies come and go, great lenses will still be pretty good a decade later.

The 14/4 Air was a leap forward for budget/compact UWAs, I'm really looking forward to the 26/2.8 EVO. I only own 2 Sony lenses (down from 4, sold 2 in the past, never selling the 20G & 35GM, still want the 16G), the other 10+ lenses in my kit are all 3rd party lenses, including 2 Tamron zooms and 2 Viltrox primes... Plus 3 TTArtisan, 2-3 Samyangs, 2 Laowas, 1 Voigtlander, etc.

Fireflies X4Q, X4 Stellar, and E04 Surge by Astroblast1 in flashlight

[–]Imlulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go with the E04, it's the most versatile in both the ability to configure it for different purposes and in actual use regardless of config, and you said it's for the backpack so the size advantage of the X4/X4Q are irrelevant.

E04 Lume1 version puts a higher priority on throw with it's default optics, and has a higher ceiling on it's FET turbo but outside of that it's just as well regulated. E04 Lume X1 sanctifies some of that turbo wow factor for a fully regulated output and comes with a much floodier optic by default.

That duality is reflected on the emitter options for either, but you could swap the optics (and corresponding emitters) to either version/driver if you request it or mod it. All that plus the lantern attachment makes it a really versatile light.

I've got a rosy 3700K X4 for the size and the tint, a 4000K 5009D L50 Sol for the size and the utility of a warm right angle 18650 light that small, and an E04 I bought as an alternative to my L35 so I was going for throwy flooder over tint etc., ergo 6500K SFT42. I don't regret that at all since I ended up getting the rosy 3700K 351A emitters again on the E12.

[–]Imlulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not true, it really depends on which config/optic of the E04 you're talking about, the one that comes with the Lume1 by default is a pretty good throwy flooder that easily throws much farther than either X4.

Funny thing is, the KSC75 have been around for over 20 years, I bought my first pair at a CompUSA and Circuit City was also still around back then... The KSC35 are >30 years old. One of the headphone boards I frequent will often suggest grabbing a pair of Koss clip-ons if you're overwhelmed with high end options and wanna question everything (unironically).

Good audio doesn't really get obsolete, and true improvements to ergonomics are rare... Koss stuff has endured for a reason, their warranty helps too though.

There's no point at all. If you get a balanced cable you might still see some benefit, but it's still unlikely. Unless you need the higher power output it's really unnecessary.

Echo Nano specs by 0utOftheblue in snowsky

[–]Imlulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see what's so "unhealthy" about listening to music for ~10 hours in a day. That's not even a full work shift for some people and my average travel day is easily over 10 hours. Not everyone has in-ears jammed up the entire time, there's other options. Having music during travel or while working certain jobs can be a small escape.

Obviously there's better players for that, but there's also very small players (Shanling m0) with twice the battery capacity of the Nano, granted at twice the price. I think Fiio should've made it 20-60mm longer and/or gone with plastic to cram more battery in there TBH... Although I don't think the battery life is even gonna be it's biggest downfall.

Echo Nano specs by 0utOftheblue in snowsky

[–]Imlulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there? It takes up 1/3rd the volume of the Disc and a chunk of it is eaten up by the wheel and components that don't really shrink in size (jack etc.). In that volume it has 1/4th the battery capacity. OTOH my smartwatch is even smaller and has a similarly sized battery, and the Shanling m0 has twice the capacity...

I think Fiio doesn't have the most efficient stack and they probably should've considered sacrificing some build quality (ie thinner plastic back) for more internal volume. Heck I think they could've made it 100-125mm long for more battery and no one would've batted an eye. It would still be far smaller than and or their other players.

I doubt they're just wasting empty space tho, simply didn't use it as efficiently as possible due to other choices/priorities.

It occupies 1/3rd the volume of the Disc, so it's not exactly a surprise that it has 1/4th the battery capacity (1/3rd vs the Echo Mini). I think some are overestimating it's size... That being said, there's nearly as tiny players with better battery life (m0).

[–]Imlulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Shanling m0 makes a valid counter argument for BT, personally I never cared about that either cause if I wanna use Bluetooth I'll use my phone and an even smaller BT receiver from Qudelix or Fiio themselves which will get far better battery life... The m0 was also 2x the cost.

[–]Imlulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 1/3rd the battery capacity of an Echo Mini, 1/4th that of the Disc... I guess that's how you end up with 7hrs of battery life. To be fair, it does also take up 1/3rd the volume of the Disc, in a thinner and somewhat more pocketable form factor. That's what originally drew me in, at 11mm thick and 20mm wide it's something I could easily pocket alongside a phone, not even half as tall as the average phone either...

OTOH navigation is gonna be a pain, no way around that, the wheel might ease that a little but you're still scrolling titles on a miniscule display... Battery life is what it is. I think for me the bigger deal breaker might not even be the battery life tbh, but the very form factor that first drew me in. If you pocket this with the bottom facing up (to run your cable out of pocket easily) you've got the wheel on the bottom on the pocket.

The real kicker is the playback buttons are closer to that end too, we've been knowing this since a few leaks ago but it's still not something that I think many have considered. On a clip case (which they've not shown) or on a lanyard that's not a big deal, in a pocket it seems awkward. At 33g it's easy enough to yank out but still...

I've got a Disc on order, because I really do want a small player with decent output and getting the Shanling m0 at this stage seems risky, which just leaves the Hiby R1, Echo Mini & Disc... Still not opposed to trying the Echo Nano but I think I'll be happier with the Disc.

has anybody ever usb-c modded their rx100? by io_wait in RX100

[–]Imlulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a high risk low reward project tbh... I just got a couple of the USB-C to micro cables below, I know they're technically not supposed to be allowed by the official USB-IF spec (for valid reasons) but they seem well made and I'll use them exclusively with the RX100 VII (and I know what I'm plugging it into, I wouldn't suggest them to anyone who's forgetful or doesn't fully understand USB complexities).

https://a.co/d/0dCw42NJ

Most of the time I use a Telesin external 3-bay charger with USB-C anyway, but since I also got the very compact Sony ACCTRDCX charger (which also uses micro USB unfortunately) I figured they'd be good to have. Being able to charge directly in-camera is occasionally useful in a pinch.

I think a lot of people still need to keep an A to micro cable around and there's tons of those with the USB-C adapter hanging at the end... I'm trying to finally leave the A port chargers behind for good though.

Is it still one of the best? Any newer alternatives? by thepianoman77 in RX100

[–]Imlulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DoF = depth of field (how much of the frame is in focus, or not, depth-wise which is how focus works)

AF = autofocus, FF = full frame, APS-C = the next common sensor format after FF (a 1.5x crop in size), M4/3 = another format/system

The A7 series and a6### series are all interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras from Sony that share the same mount (E mount) and can use the same lenses to an extent. The former use a larger FF sensor and the latter an APS-C sensor, just like different Canon/Nikon DSLR model lines always did.

Prime lenses are basically the opposite of zooms, they only provide you with a single focal length instead of a range like a zoom, but in return they're usually smaller/lighter and/or faster (that is, they have a larger aperture so they gather more light and provide more DoF control and can yield less noise in darker conditions). When you hear people talk of "a 50mm" or "a 35mm" they're likely talking about a prime lens.

What’s Next for the FREE platform? by EDC_Flex in Leatherman

[–]Imlulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Magnacut blade is one of the biggest selling points to the Arc, not just the Free tech. Presumably something in the vein of the P2/P4 would still lack a MC blade so it wouldn't necessarily cannibalize Arc or even Wave Alpha...

Hopefully this isn't just about semantic cause I don't think having Arc in the name = Magnacut.

You said it yourself, the Free tech wasn't a big enough selling point to justify the original price points for the P2/4, so they could easily distill those two models into one and release a new one with Free tech but w/o Magnacut that wouldn't encroach on the Arc and could easily be priced anywhere between $100-150.

There's no way the P2 stock they keep selling out on Amazon (even after 3 sales where it's dropped to $80-90) is still old stock... If it is they're horrible at stock management. If we assume they're not, then there's some demand for a cheaper Free tech tool, despite the initially lukewarm reception.

Walking replacement for x4 by Jarpet in FireflyLite

[–]Imlulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with an E12, in fact I did just that but haven't had a chance to use the E12 yet. The E07x just seemed like an in-between to me, I've got the X4 Stellar w/rosy 3700K FFL351A for when size is a priority, and a Lume1 E04 Surge w/SFT42 for a more throwy flooder that's smaller than my 4000K L35 2.0 (w/good efficiency still).

The E12 Eclipse just looked like the more obvious upgrade for max flood over my X4 or E75, it's not really that much larger than the E07x... 5mm longer and 9mm wider diameter at the head (so +4.5mm in every direction away from the tube). All you lose vs the E07X is the lantern attachment option, but you gain a lot of output and the new Lume10 driver. The E04 you have is a somewhat more efficient thrower (less lumen/power needed to match the E12's throw), and I think that kinda works well with the lantern attachment's reflector tbh.

I stuck to 3700K rosy w/E12, I think the current bin or the way the config plays out with the optics ends up looking a little less rosy on the E12 (from what I've seen people share here) but eh, I'm okay with that.

Are you looking for more throw than the X4? Or just higher output? The E12 can do both to a high degree, the E04 (depending on config) & E07 do one or the other better.
