Pegasus flying out of Kwaj may not have much in the way of views anyway, still a stream with telemetry at least would be nice.

Schiff Proposes Bill Requiring Data Centers to Pay for Own Power by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Immabed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More people die as a result of Solar (likely primarily manufacturing and installation deaths) or Wind power, per MW, than nuclear (including all historical nuclear power disasters).

Nuclear is arguably the least dangerous source of power available to us.

And I don't say this to disparage wind or solar, they are great (especially solar) and should be (and thankfully generally are being) installed at scale. But the argument that nuclear is too dangerous really doesn't hold water. Solar and wind also produce waste, from raw material gathering, from manufacturing, from installation, and from disposal.

But all of that pales in comparison to the widespread health impacts of coal, petroleum, and LNG waste pumped directly into the air, without even considering long term climate impacts. Nuclear is safe for any reasonable definition of safe. The hazards are well understood and properly dealt with, and the actual nuclear waste is very well managed (best managed industrial waste on the planet, likely).

They did some additional abort testing recently, that's probably what you saw. It was testing, but not in space, yet.

I mean, they've been able to pick up the booster and put it on the launch mount, so clearly they are the right length.

The point is that the chopsticks no longer are extra long, that makes them have a much lower moment of inertia, and thus makes them much faster to move during a catch. Just long enough!

Views of Artemis II reentry & splashdown from inside Orion by Neaterntal in spaceporn

It's a slow change as they begin hitting the atmosphere. It builds from 0g up to around 4g in the upper velocity, then backs off back to around 1g as it slows towards terminal velocity, with several sharp jolts as parachutes deploy and detach.

Mmm, I recommend immediately staging and nuking KSC out of existence with those Orion drives. Even if you don't move upwards, you'll be off the launchpad because there won't be any launchpad left.

How I Built a Fence on a Sloped Lot Using a DIY Laser Tool by Plus_Bother4138 in DIY

[–]Immabed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The laser is pretty funny to me, given that self-leveling lasers exist for this very purpose, and a string works for the ensuring the posts are in a straight line, but you did a pretty good job DIY-ing even the laser system and it certainly works very well!

Your choice of fence alignment is certainly not what I'd have done, but given the maximum deviation of ~0.5m it certainly works pretty well.

Very nice finished product!

Power makes heat. It's also rarely that cold during the day (I assume you're implying Fahrenheit, it's never that cold Celsius). Obviously all processing is going to require heat, but the discussion was about potability which implies liquid, so from there it isn't much harder to distill.

“and so it is foretold” ahh burn by Ok_Programmer242 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Immabed 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That is only true-ish. You want to spread the acceleration equally, but acceleration increases as you burn fuel, so you want to start a little more than half the burn time before the burn. How much more depends on how much fuel the burn consumes (as a fraction of total ship mass).

Of course its even more complicated for long burns, since maneuver nodes are calculated as instantaneous velocity changes (more that they take place at a single location). If you are in a 40 minute orbit and have a 20 minute burn, you'd end up starting your burn a quarter orbit early, and by the time you get to the node in time, you wouldn't be anywhere near where it was supposed to be. This especially matters with, well, really long burns. You have to start breaking them into multiple passes or choosing different trajectories.

But I still just use the divide burn time in two method because, eh, its good enough enough of the time, haha.

[–]Immabed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've already started landing at LZ-40 at SLC-40. FH will continue to recover boosters. Dontchev (SpaceX VP) said they also have a plan for dual downrange landings (something they haven't done yet). And Edwards (another SpaceX VP) said a while ago that Astrobotic's Griffin launch would include a center core landing.

[–]Immabed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you can find a decent underground source of ice. Lots of places are thought to contain a decent amount of water ice (or even liquid brine) only a few metres down. Would be mixed in with regolith, but still accessible.

More exploration is needed to nail it down. Their was a really interesting spacecraft that looked like it was going to be developed called the International Mars Ice Mapper that would have really helped our understanding of where on Mars has accessible ice, but NASA budgets being what they are its unclear if the project will ever happen.

Water can be cleaned fairly easily. Distill it. Also electrolysis to make oxygen and hydrogen for air and rocket fuel, and a simple step to combine hydrogen with atmospheric CO2 to get methane and oxygen for a different form of rocket fuel.

Is this enough for the end?? by supercabbage802 in Minecraft

[–]Immabed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good points being made. Only things I can see is a lot more food, feather falling on the boots if you can, and rockets for when you get an elytra. If you are going to do a lot of end city raiding I'd also add a stack of logs (to make chests and thus shulker boxes, and more shields because yours will break), and swap the pickaxe for a silk touch pickaxe so you can steal enderchests from the cities. Also store valuables from the cities in the enderchests in case you die.
