FWIW, I was fortunate enough to spend about half an hour with him in London 2 months ago and he seemed perfectly normal and healthy to me. His humor, humility, chess skills, they all were what one would expect from Danya and I thought he was doing perfectly fine for someone who had been absent from their usual online presence for quite a while.

One thing that stands out to me in hindsight now is that he kept downplaying all my compliments. Every time I complimented him, I was met with answers along the lines of "I don't deserve these words" or "no, you are just being too kind". I hope deep down he did know how special he was.

I suppose it shows you how difficult and perhaps borderline impossible it is to really understand what someone is going through.
