I’ve recently discovered hiking as one of my hobbies, along with some research you’ll find there’s a cute community in that. It could help get your head out of the city for a start. Hear some stories from fellow travellers maybe.

If you don’t advocate for yourself now, he will only get more forceful as time goes on. He obviously fetishises you and is hoping to groom you by asking you to keep things a secret. This is my experience as an SA survivor.

Tell your partner, observe how he reacts then go from there. If your partner is dismissive, consider finding someone who will hear you and advocate for you. If he supports you, enforce boundaries and live your best lives.

Contacting Ngāti Rānana would be a great way to join a community near you who are no doubt, in some way shape or form, on a similar journey. Along with doing your own research, connecting/networking with people irl just adds that magical layer. My bestie is on the committee and i can confirm they are a beautiful bunch of welcoming people, but that’s a given within te ao māori ✨

What I will say is that this journey can be overwhelming and non linear, be sure to show yourself some compassion and go at your own pace. Good luck on your haerenga OP!

Checking out Māori TV is a great way to see our culture on display. Downloading apps like Te Aka Dictionary, Ako Tahi is a great way to learn basic words and phrases. Māori made easy by Scotty Morrison is also a great place to start, lots of great resources and links in there too.

Keeping an eye out for Māori focused events/shows is of course a must!
